.RAZOR BLADE HONING DEVICE Filed Sept. 7, 1932 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 C .E Holfz am I! flllorney Patented Sept. 26, 1933 p t September 7, 1932. Serial Nb.'632, 040 j V Z'Claims. (o1 51-15s) I This invention relates to a device-for sharpening all types of double-edged safety razor blades of the so-called Gillette type. 7
I am aware of the fact that various styles and forms of honing stones and concaved glass bodies and the like have been utilized for sharpening the cutting edges of razorblades. T I
In carrying the present inventive conception into practice, I have evolved and produced a novel and practicable glass base embodying a half-cylinder and constructed to accommodate a pendulous operating lever provided with means to aid in holding the blade firmly in positionfor effective results.
Stated more explicitly, I have discovered a simple and economical structure including a rockably mounted blade holder which systematically and uniformly coacts with the blade in maintaining the blade firmly in abrading contact with the concaved honing surface in order that the blade will be swept back and forth in a definite regular path so that the edges will be refined and reconditioned accurately and uniformly for more favorable shaving results.
Frequently in devices of this type the blade is moved by one hand of the operator, sometimes in a circular direction, and other times in a predetermined straight path. Manifestly, however, in the hands of an inexperienced person, the results obtained from this method of sharpening are unsatisfactory indeed.
The principal purpose of the present invention is to provide areliable and carefully perfected structure which will accomplish the desired results in a safe, positive and practicable manner.
Other features and advantages will become more readily apparent from the following description and drawings.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is an end elevation of the structure designed in accordance with the principles of the present inventive conception.
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the actuating holder and lever.
Figures 4 and 5 are sections taken on the planes of the lines 4-4 and 5--5, respectively, of Figure 2.
Figure 6 is a bottom plan of the retaining element on the lever.
Figure '7 is a fragmentary detail section through the lower actuating end of the pendulous lever.
Referring now to the drawings by distinguishing reference characters, it will be observed that the numeral 8 designates .a part which maybe broadly referred to as abase; This is all glass and of appropriate dimensions'and embodies a pair of spaced pa'rallel end walls 9 whose lower v end portions are. fashioned as'indiicated at 10 in I Figure 5 toprovide feet to reston atable or support.
Formed between the end wallsjis thehone l1,
this being of semi-cylin'drical form in cross sectional shape. Attached to theintermediate por- .tions of the end walls and overlyingthe hone 11 are duplicate companion arms 12 which extend inwardly toward each'other in alinement and terminate in laterally directed extremities 13, carrying a fulcrum or pivot bolt 14; V
The holding and actuating devicefor-the safety razor blade 15 is designated 'as a unit by the numeral 16 and this comprises a lever whichincludes a stem 1'7 having a vertically elongated slot 18 with the slotted portion arranged between the extremities 13 and the bolt 14 extending therethrough to provide the requisite pivotal connection. It will be observed that the pin and slot arrangement'permits the lever to be raised up and down to provide for requisitee'levation. The upper end of the stem is'provided with a knob 19 for convenient operation; The lower end of the stem is fashioned with an arcuate backing head orplate 20 on the underside of which is a corrugated rubber pad 21 which provides the requisite anti-slipping grip on the safety razor blade 15.
In practice, the blade is placed in position as depicted in Figures 2, 4, and 5. The anti-slipping rubber pad 21 is engaged with the blade, the ad- 9 justment being made through the medium of the pin and slot connection" of the actuating device 16 with said blade. Obviously, the bladeis sharpened by moving the lever back and forth in a pendulous manner until the blade is sharp on one face, then the blade is turned over with the fingers and the process is continued until the opposite face is sharp. A little warm water in the hone, which actually functions as a receptacle, will lessen the necessary to depend on the movements of the hand as the lever has a definite mechanical pendulous action which is positive in securing its results. The blade is touched only with the fingers while being placed moved.
The gist of the in position, turned, or re invention is in the provision o V 1 vexed honing surface.
.as the hone 11 and is preferably of semi-cylindri- 7 an abrasive base, preferably of allglass formation; wherein said base is characterized by a con This surface is described cal form although this crosssectional shape is not absolutely essential. By forming the hone integral with theend walls and constructing the end Walls for effective seating on the table, a firm support for the hone is provided, The essential feature, however, is the pendulous lever which has vertical adjustment and which has a definite movement back and forth in an arcuate path, said lever being provided with means to bear firmly and uniformly on the blade vin order to insure even pressure and effective and expeditiousv results. i 7 1 It isthought that persons skilled in the art to which the invention relates will be able to obtain a clear understanding of the invention after considering'the description in connection with the I 1. A safety razor blade sharpening device, comprising a base having a substantially semicircular honing surface, a pair of aligned arms connected to the base and extending longitudinally over the said surface, each arm having a right angular extension at its freeend, said extensions being spaced apart, a stem passing through said space and having a slot'therein, a pin passing through the extensions and through the slot, a head on the lower end of the'stem engaging a blade and a handle on the upper end of the stem. a
2. A safety razor blade sharpening device comprising a base having a substantially semi-circular honing surface, a stationary pin, means for supporting the pin from the base, said pin extending longitudinally over the said surface, a stem having a longitudinally extending slot therein through which the pin passes for permitting rocking and longitudinal movement of the stem,
said supporting means including means forhpreand a. pad on the lower face of the head for en-' gaging avblade resting on said honing surface. .1
