This invention relates to ignition coil-switch units for automotive vehicles and more particularly to units usually designated as lock-coils comprising an ignition coil and a switch operated bya key forcontrolling the ignition circuit.
It is one of the objects of the present invention to simplify the construction of switch-coil units and particularly the assembling of the parts thereof. This object is accomplished in the disclosed embodiment of the present invention by a construction which comprises chiefly a tubular housing divided by a partition into a coil chamber and a switch case chamber. The tubular housing and the partition are provided with coacting means limiting the movement of the partition into the housing to a definite position within the housing. The partition is held within the tubular housing in this. definite position by a tubular member attached to the tubular housgo ing. To this tubular member is secured a cover for the switch case; and the cover carries a controller for operating a movable contact within the switch case. The partition is made preferably of non-conducting material and carries the switch 5 stationary contacts.
A further object of the invention is to provide for mounting terminals of the switch-coil unit upon the said partition, these terminals extending exteriorly of the tubular housing.
Further objects and advantages of the present invention will be apparent from the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings wherein a preferred embodiment of one form of the present invention is clearly 5) shown.

Referring to Fig. 3, designates a tubular metallic housing closed at one end by a nonconducting cover 21 having embedded therein a metallic ring 22 having its flange 2,3. bent around a flange 24 provided by the housing 20. The housing 20 is divided by a non-conducting partition 25 into a switch chamber 26 and a coil chamber 2'1. The partition 25 and cover 21 are provided with facing tubular bosses 28 and 29 respectively which receive the ends of a core 30 which passes through a non-conducting tube 31 upon which is wrapped a secondary winding 32 covered by a wrapping 33 upon which is wound a primary winding 34 covered by a wrapping 35. Spaced from the wrapping 35 are a number of convolutions of magnetizable sheet metal 36 which are slit partly across, that is, longitudinally of the core 30 and which are wound tightly together and are packed snugly in against the interior wall of the case 20.
The inside lead 40 of the secondary 32 is connected with the core 30. The core 30 is connected by a nail 41 with a metal socket 42 molded into the non-conducting socket portion 43 provided by the cover 21 for receiving the high tension cable for connecting the secondary with an ignition distributor. The outside lead 44 oi the secondary 32 is connected together with the inside lead 45 of the primary 34 and these wires are connected with switch contact insert 46 molded in the partition 25. The outside lead 47 of the primary 34 is connected with a switch contact insert 48. The wires 44 and 45 pass together through a non-conducting tube 49.
The wire 4'7 passes through a non-conducting tube 50. The partition 25 carries other switch contact inserts 51 and 52 similar in construction to the insert 48, which has integral tangs 48a embedded in the partition 25 as shown in Fig. 8. The inserts 48, 5-1 and 52 are provided with extending arms 53, 54 and 55 respectively which provide switch terminals. These arms pass through the non-conducting extensions 56, 57 and 58 respectively provided by the partition 25. Though the contact 46 does not have an extending arm such as the contacts 48, 51 and 52 are provided with, it does have a short extension around which is molded a non-conducting extension 59 provided by the partition 25.
Referring to Fig. 2, it will be noted that these extensions 56, 5'7, 58 and 59 are located respectively in longitudinal alignment with notches 66, 67, 68 and 69 provided by the housing 20. Each extension 56, 57, 58 and 59 is provided with a groove '70 which receives a portion of the margin of the metal which surrounds or defines one of these notches. In other words, the extensions from the partion 25 are received by notches in the housing and the metallic wall. Each notch is received by a groove in the nonconducting extension which fits in that notch. Thus, an effective seal is provided for the pitch or asphalt 71 contained within the coil chamber 27.
The preferred method of assembling the coil would be first to attach the cover 21 to the housing; then, place within the housing the outer magnetizable material 36; then, with the housing in an inverted position with the cover undermost, pour in upon the cover a small quantity of asphalt. Then the assembly of core and windings is placed within the housing thus displacing some of the asphalt which rises along the sides of the windings. The wires 44, 45 and 4'7 are threaded through holes in the partition 25 and contacts 46 and 48 embedded therein before the partition is assembled with the housing 20; and an additional quantity of asphalt is poured into the housing and then the partition is assembled. The wires 44, 45 and 4'? are pulled tight, the excess cut off and these wires are soldered to the contacts 46 and 48 as indicated. When the partition is inserted within the housing its tubular socket displaces some of the asphalt to cause the same to fill the voids between the ends of the windings and core and partition.
Those arcuate edge portions of the housing 20 defining the ends of the notches 66, 67, 68 and 69 provide stops against which the partition extensions 56, 57, 58 and 59 respectively engage. Thus, the tubular housing 20 and the partition 25 are provided with coacting means limiting the movement of the partition into the housing to a definite position, shown best in Figs. 1 and 3. The partition 25 is retained in this position by a tubular member, or collar or mounting bracket which is assembled as shown, portions of its annular cylindrical flange 81 being spot welded or otherwise permanently secured to the tongues 66a, 67a, 68a and 69a defining notches 66, 67, 68 and 69. Thus is provided a permanent assembly of coil, housing, switch contact and terminal carrier and mounting bracket. Bracket 80 is provided with apertured cars 82 for providing attachment to a suitable support.
'To the tubular collar member or bracket 80 is secured a cover for the switch housing 26,
'which cover carries a controller for operating a movable contact of the switch. This cover is in the form of a plate 83 to which is attached a barrel 84 providing a bearing for a switch controller in the form of a key cylinder 85 carrying lock plungers 86 which, when the proper key 87 is inserted, are retracted from locking engagement with longitudinal grooves 88 and 88a provided by the barrel 84. The cylinder 85 is locked permanently in position by a ring 89 fitting in a groove 90 in the cylinder and which drops by gravity behind a shoulder 91 provided by the barrel 84. The cylinder 85 carries a lug 92 and a driving pin 93 received by suitable recesses in a non-conducting switch contact carrier 94 which supports and drives a movable switch contact 95 having a central cylinder portion 96 received by a recess 9'7 in the partition 25. The cylinder portion 96 is integral with arms each of which provides a contact projection 98 and a hook-like portion 99 received by a notch 100 provided by the contact carrier 94. A spring 101 which is interposed between the carrier 94 and the flange 102 of the cylindrical portion 96 of the switch contact 95 urges the projections 98 against the partition 25 and the contacts 46, 48, 51 and 52 carried thereby. Movement of the contact carrier 94 in either direction by the key 87 is limited by providing the carrier 94 with stops 103 and 104 each engageable with a lug 105 punched out from the cover 83. The cover 83 is provided with a projection 106 which serves as a detent and cooperates with detents 107 in the carrier 94. The carrier 94 can snap away from the projection 106 due to the fact that the spring 101 yieldingly presses the carrier 94 toward the left as well as contact 98 toward the right as viewed in Fig. 3. Plate 83 is provided with notches 110 which receive tangs 111 provided by the collar 80. After the plate 83 is assembled the tangs 111 are bent over as indicated at 112 to secure the plate 83 to the collar 80 and hence to the coil housing 20.
The exposed end of the switch-coil unit may be finished off if desired with a dial plate construction comprising a cup-shaped spacer 120 whose back wall 121 has a central aperture, for receiving the barrel 84, and which has an integral projecting tang 122 received by the recess 123 in the plate 83, as shown in Fig. '7. Thus the spacer 120 is located definitely with respect to plate 83 and key 7, which is used as an index with respect to a dial plate 125. The spacer 120 is provided with an outwardly turned flange 124 against which is located a dial plate 125 secured by a bezel ring 126 having a flange 127 bent around the periphery of the plate 125 and around the flange 124. The plate 125 carries a finishing ring 128 through which the cylinder 85 extends.
Referring to Fig. 4, it will be noted that the battery designated at 130 is connected to the terminal 55, and that terminal 53 is connected with an ignition timer not shown. The extra terminal 54 is for making connection with another instrument operated at the time the ignition is turned on, for example, an electrically operated gasoline gauge. When the switch contact carrier 94 is in the position shown none of its contact projections 98 engages the switch contact 52 connected with a battery 130. When the key 87 is operated to turn the ignition on the contacts 51, 52 and 46 will be engaged by the contact projections 98 to connect the battery terminal 55 with a gasoline gauge terminal 54 and to connect the battery terminal 55 with contact 46 which is connected with the ignition coil windings. When the igniton is turned on no contact projection 98 engages the stationary contact 48 hence the ignition coil will not be short circuited.
Referring to Fig. 6, it is evident that the key can be taken out in either its looking or unlocking positions since the barrel 84 is provided with a pair of diametrically opposite longitudinal grooves 88 for the key removal in the locked position and with a pair of grooves 88.; for key removal in the unlocked position of the cylinder 85.
While the form of embodiment of the present invention as herein disclosed, constitutes a preferred form, it is to be understood that other forms .might be adopted, all coming within the scope of the claims which follow.
What is claimed is as follows:
1. An ignition coil and switch structure comprising, in combination, a tubular housing, a partition of molded non-conducting material dividing the housing into coil and switch chambers. stationary switch contacts located within the switch chamber and carried by the partition and connected with terminals also supported by the partition exterior-1y of the housing, a movable switch contact within the switch chamber, means for closing the switch chamber, means for operating the movable switch contact and carried by the switch chamber closing means, coil windings in the coil chamber and having connections with stationary switch contacts, and means for closing an end of the coil chamber.
2. An ignition coil and switch structure comprising, in combination, a tubular housing, a partition of molded non-conducting material dividing the housing into coil and switch chambers, inserts molded in the partition and providing stationary switch contacts, some of the inserts having portions extending outside of the housing to provide terminals, a movable switch contact within the switch chamber, means for closing the switch chamber, means for operating the movable switch contact and carried by the switch chamber closing means, coil windings in the coil chamberv and having connections with stationary switch contacts, and means for closing an end of the coil chamber.
3. An ignition coil and switch structure comprising, in combination, a tubular housing, a partition of molded non-conducting material dividing the housing into coil and switch chambers, and having spaced projections extending radially through the housing, inserts molded in the partition and providing stationary switch contacts, some of the inserts having portions extending through said projections and outside of the housing to provide terminals, a movable switch contact within the switch chamber, means for closing the switch chamber, means for operating the movable switch contact and carried by the switch chamber closing means, coil windings in the coil chamber and having connections with stationary switch contacts, and means for closing an end of the coil chamber.
. 4. An ignition coil and switch structure comprising, in combination, a tubular housing, a partition of molded non-conducting material dividing the housing into coil and switch chambers, stationary switch contacts located within the switch chamber and carried by the partition and connected with terminals also supported by the partition exteriorly of the housing, a movable contact cooperating with the stationary contacts, means for operating the movable contact, and coil windings in the coil chamber having connections with the stationary contacts.
5. An ignition coil and switch structure comprising, in combination, a tubular housing having spaced, longitudinal notches extending the same distance from one end of the housing, a non-conducting partition comprising a disc-portion located within the housing and portion received by said notches of the housing and extending beyond said housing, a collar surrounding the notched end portion of the housing and bearing against the projections of the partition and attached to the housing to secure the partition in position so that the partition divides the housing into switch and coil chambers, metal inserts in said partition to provide stationary switch contacts some of which have portions extending through the projections of the portion to provide terminals outside the case, manually operable movable contact in the switch chamber, and coil windings in the coil chamber having connections with the switch contacts.
6. Anignition coil and switch structure comprising, in combination, a tubular housing having spaced, longitudinal notches extending from one end of the housing, a partition comprising a disc-portion located within the housing and portions received by the notches of the housing, a collar surrounding the notched end portion of the housing and bearing against said portions of the partition and attached to the housing to secure the portions in position so that the partition divides the housing into switch and coil chambers, stationary contacts insulatingly carried by the partition for connection with coil windings, a movable contact in the switch chamber, a cover for the switch chamber, means for securing the cover to the housing, and a controller for the movable contact carried by the cover.
7. An ignition coil and switch structure comprising, in combination, a tubular housing having spaced, longitudinal notches extending from one end of the housing, a partition comprising a disc-portion located within the housing and T portions received by the notches of the hous ing, a collar surrounding the notched end portion of the housing and bearing against said portions of the partition and attached to the housing to secure the portions in position so that the partition divides the housing into switch and coil chambers, stationary contacts insulatingly carried by the partition for connection with coil windings, a movable contact in the switch chamber, a cover for the switch chamber, and adapted to bear at its periphery against said collar, means for securing the cover to the collar, and a controller for the movable contact carried by the cover.
8. An ignition coil and switch structure comprising, in combination, a tubular housing having spaced, longitudinal notches extending from one end of the housing, a partition comprising a disc-portion located within the housing and portions received by the notches of the housing, a collar surrounding the notched end portion of the housing and bearing against said portions of the partition and attached to the housing to secure the portions in position so that the partition divides the housing into switch and coil chambers, stationary contacts insulatingly carried by the partition for connection with coil windings, a movable contact in the switch chamber, a cover for the switch chamber, and adapted to bear at its periphery against said collar, means provided by the collar for securing the cover to the collar and a controller for the movable contact carried by the cover.
9, An ignition coil and switch structure comprising, in combination, a tubular housing, a partition insertable within the housing for dividing the housing into switch and coil chambers and having projections extending through the housing, ooacting means provided by the tubular housing and the projections for limiting movement of the partition into the housing to a definite position, a tubular member attached to the housing for retaining the partition in this definite position, stationary contacts insulatingly carried by the partition for connection with coil windings, a movable contact in the switch chamber, a cover for the switch chamber, means for securing the cover to the housing, and a controller for the movable contact carried by the cover.
10. An ignition coil and switch structure comprising in combination, a tubular housing, a partition insertable within the housing for dividing the housing into switch and coil chambersand having projections extending through the housing, coacting means provided by the tubular housing and partition projections for limiting movement of the partition into the housing to a definite position, a tubuar member attached to the housing and abutting the projections for retaining the partition in this definite position, stationary contacts insulatingly carried by the partition for connection with coil windings, a movable contact in the switch chamber, a cover for the switch chamber, and adapted to bear at its periphery against said tubular member, means for securing the cover to the tubular member, and a controller for the movable contact carried by the cover.
11. An ignition coil and switch structure comprising in combination, a tubular housing, a partition insertable within the housing for dividing the housing into switch and coil chambers and having projections extending through the housing, coacting means including parts of the tubular housing and projections of the partition for limiting movement of the partition into the housing to a definite position, a tubular member attached without the housing and en gaging the partition projections for retaining the partition in this definite position, stationary contacts insulatingly carried by the partition for connection with coil windings, a movable contact in the switch chamber, a cover for the switch chamber, and adapted to bear at its periphery against said tubular member, means provided by the tubular member for securing the cover to the tubular member and a controller for the movable contact carried by the cover.
12, An, ignition coil and switch structure comprising, in combination, a tubular housing, a partition insertable within the housing for dividing the housing into switch and coil chambers, means for locating the partition within the housing, a tubular member secured about the end of the housing for retaining the partition in the located position, a cover fort-he switch chamber, movable switch parts carried by the cover and disposed within the switch chamber, and means including a part of said tubular member for securing the cover to the housing.
13. A subassembly unit adapted to be united with parts of a switch to provide a coil and switch assembly, said unit comprising, in combination, a tubular case providing a coil housing for enclosing a winding, a switch contact support within the case, a stationary contact connected with said winding and insulatingly carried by said support and adapted to cooperate with a movable contact, a collar surrounding the case, and means including a part of the col-- lar and extending therefrom and adapted to secure against theeollar a plate which carries a controller for operating the movable contact.
14. A subassembly unit adapted to be united with parts of a switch to provide a coil and switch assembly, said unit comprising, in com bination, a tubular case providing a coil housing for enclosing a winding, a switch contact support within the case, a stationary contact connected with said winding and insulatingly carried by said support and adapted to cooperate with a movable contact, a collar secured about the case and disposed on one side of the partition adapted to receive a plate closing the end of said case and carrying a controller for operating'tlie movable contact, and means extending from the collar and adapted to secure the plate against the collar.
15. A subassembly unit adapted to be united with parts of a switch to provide a coil and switch assembly, said unit comprising, in combination, a tubular case providing a coil housing for enclosing a winding, a switch contact support within the case, a stationary contact connected with said winding and insulatingly carried by said support and adapted to cooperate with a movable contact, a collar secured about the case and disposed on one side of the partition and adapted to receive a plate closing the end of said case and carrying a controller for operating the movable contact, and means integral with the collar and adapted to secure the plate in position to close the said housing.
16. A subassembly unit adapted to be united with parts of a switch to provide a coil and switch assembly, said unit comprising, in combination, a tubular case providing a coil housing for enclosing a winding and having spaced longitudinal notches extending from one end of the housing, a support comprising a disc portion located within the housing and projections received by the notches of the housing, a collar secured about the notched end portion of the housing and bearing against said projection of the support to hold the support in position, stationary contacts insulatingly carried by the partition for connection with coil windings, and adapted to cooperate with a movable contact, and means for securing against the collar a :plate carrying a device for operating the movable contact.
17. A subassembly unit adapted to be united with parts of a switch to provide a coil and switch assembly, said unit comprising, in combination, a tubular case providing a coil housing for enclosing a winding and having spaced longitudinal notches extending from one end of the housing, a support comprising a disc portion located within the housing and projections received by the notches of the housing, a collar secured about the notched end portion of the housing and bearing against said projections of the support to hold the support in position, stationary contacts insulatingly carried by the partition for connection with coil windings, and adapted to cooperate with a movable contact, terminals carried by said projections exteriorly of the housing and having connection with stationary contacts, and means for securing against the collar a plate carrying a device for operating the movable contact.
18. A subassembly unit adapted to be united with parts of a switch to provide a coil and switch assembly, said unit comprising, in combination, a tubular case providing a coil housing for enclosing a winding, a non-conducting support within the housing, stationary contacts carried by the support within the housing and adapted to cooperate with a movable contact, terminals connected with the stationary contacts and carried by the support exteriorly of the housing, and means for attaching to the housing a cover member carrying a device for operating the movable contact.
19. A subassembly unit adapted to be united with parts of a switch to provide a coil and switch assembly, said unit comprising, in combination, a tubular case providing a coil housing for enclosing a winding, a partition insertable within the housing for dividing the housing into switch and coil chambers, means for locating the partition within the housing, a tubular member secured about the end of the housing for retaining the partition in the located position, stationary contacts carried by the partition and adapted to cooperate with a movable contact, and means for securing against the tubular member a plate carrying a device for operating the movable contact.
20. A subassembly unit adapted to be united with parts of a switch to provide a coil and switch assembly, said unit comprising, in combination, a tubular case providing a coil hens" ing for enclosing a winding, a partition insertable within the housing for dividing the housing into switch and coil chambers, means for locating the partition within the housing, a tubular member secured about the end of the housing for retaining the partition in the located position, stationary contacts carried by the partition and adapted to cooperate with a movable contact, and means provided by the tubular member for securing against said tubular member a plate carrying a device for operating the movable contact.
21. A subassembly unit adapted to be united with parts of a switch to provide a coil and switch assembly, said unit comprising, in combination, a tubular housing having spaced, 1ongitudinal notches extending from one end of the housing, a partition comprising a disc portion located within the housing and portions received .by the notches of the housing, a collar surrounding the notched end portions of the housing and bearing against said portions of the partition and attached to the housing to secure the portions in position so that the partition divides the housing into switch and coil chambers, stationary contacts insulatingly carried by the partition for connection with coil windings, and means for securing to the housing a cover which carries a controller for operating a movable switch contact.
22. A subassembly unit adapted to be united with parts of a switch to provide a coil and switch assembly, said unit comprising, in combination, a tubular housing, a partition insertable within the housing for dividing the housing into switch and coil chambers and having projecions extending through the housing, coacting means provided by the tubular housing and the projections for limiting movement of the partition into the housing to a definite position, a tubular member attached to the housing for retaining the partition in this definite position, stationary contacts insulatingly carried by the partition for connection with coil windings and means for securing to the housing a cover which carries a controller for operating a movable switch contact.
In an ignition coil and wiring structure, the combination comprising, a tubular housing having spaced, longitudinal notches extending from one end of the housing, a partition coma disc-portion located within the housing and portions received by the notches of the housing, a collar surrounding the notched end portion of the housing and bearing against said portions of the partition and attached to the housing to secure the portions in position so that the partition divides the housing into a coil chamber and an electrical connector cham her, an electrical connecting element insulatingly carried by the partition for connection with the coil, and means for securing a cover to the notched end of the housing to close the connector chamber.
24. In an ignition coil and wiring structure, the combination comprising, a tubular housing, a partition insertable within the housing for dividing the housing into a coil chamber and an electrical connector chamber and having projections extending through the housing, coacting means provided by the tubular housing and the projections for limiting movement of the partition into the housing to a definite position, a tubular member attached to the housing for retaining the partition in this definite position; and means for securing a cover to the housing to close the electrical connector chamber.
