The said clutch members 16 and 18 are constructed and arranged in known manner so that the lower roller 4 can be driven only in one direction. The gearing for operating the lower and upper rollers 4 and 5 is arranged relatively to a casing 23 located within the box 1 at one side thereof and is so designed in the example shownthat the said rollers are rotated in the desired direction by imparting rotary movement to the handle 19 in clockwise direction.
The rollers 4 and 5 are each formed with a single helical groove 24, which may be of right or left hand pitch, as desired, the groove on each roller being of the same hand, as shown, but may be of different hand. Also, if desired, each roller may be formed with helical grooves of right and left hand pitch. The pitch can be determined according to requirements. The rollers, in the example shown, may be made of a relatively hard material, such as metal, or a composition, such, for instance, as bakelite, as aforesaid, or similar material, the grooves in that event being each provided with a helical strip 25 of leather, rubber, or other compressible material, which may extend entirely, as shown, across the width of the groove, or may extend partially across the groove, and project beyond the periphery of the roller so as to serve normally to effect, for ex ample, the stropping of the blade to be dealt with. When the strip is worn so as to be flush,
or approximately flush, with the periphery of the roller, the blade will then be subjected to the action of both the strip and the roller, so that, for example, a combined stropping and sharpening or honing of the blade may be effected.
Alternatively, as in the example shown in Figure 5, each of the rollers may be formed of leather, rubber or the like and the helical groove 24 therein may be provided with a strip 26 of metal, glass or any other relatively hard material, which is normally disposed below the periphery of the roller, so that the periphery of the roller may normally effect, for example, the stropping of the blade, but when worn so as to be flush, or approximately flush, with the strip 26 of hard material, a combined stropping and sharpening or honing of the blade may be effected.
In a further modification shown in Figures 6 and '7, each roller, preferably made of bakelite, or similar material, may be provided at the periphery adjacent to one Wall of the helical groove 24, with a slightly raised helical portion 27 to act on the edge of the blade being dealt with, so as to remove, for instance, any burr that may be formed at the edge of the blade. If desired, the said wall may be undercut, as shown in Figure 8. In a still further modification, shown in Figure 9, a helical strip 25 of leather or other suitable material, such as aforesaid, may extend partially across the groove 24 in the roller and project slightly beyond the periphery of the raised helical portion 27, or, as shown in Figure 10, may be flush with the periphery of the said raised helical portion.
What I claim is:--
l. A device for sharpening razor blades comprising a box adapted to house a razor having a blade attached thereto, means in said box for supporting the razor, said means including two upright nembers to cooperate with and support the handle and frame of the razor, a lid hinged to said box and adapted to fold thereon when the device is in operation, a member carried by the lid and formed with a recess to receive and support the guard of the razor, sharpening rolls in both box and lid engaging the razor blade,
means for operating said rolls, and means for preventing reverse rotation of said rolls.
