3 Claims.
This invention relates to fire extinguishers and particularly to an extinguisher and a mounting therefor adapted for use in motor vehicles. This application is division of application Serial No.
5 436,281, filed March 17, 1930.
As is Well known most of the fires which injure and destroy motor vehicles start under the hood or in the carburetor. Furthermore, a vehicle very often takes fire in case of a collision and this fire also originates under the hood.
This invention has for its salient object to provide an extinguisher so constructed and so mounted that the extinguisher will automatically operate in case a fire breaks out beneath the hood of a vehicle or in the vicinity of the engine.
Other objects or" the invention will appear from the following specification taken in connection with the drawing, which forms a part of this application, and in which Fig. 1 is an elevational view partly in section of an extinguisher constructed and mounted in accordance with the invention; and
Fig. 2 is a detail elevational view taken at right angles to Fig. l.
The invention briefly described consists of an extinguisher casing, means for clamping the cas-- ing beneath. the hood of a motor vehicle and ahammer controlled by a fusible element and adapted in case of fire to automatically operate and cause the extinguishing liquid to be liberated.
In the particular embodiment of the invention illustrated there is shown a portion of a hood of a motor vehicle and a tie rod 10 of the usual con struction which connects the radiator to the dash. The fire extinguisher comprises an outer casing 11 having a pair or" clamps l2 and 13 which encircle the casing and are secured to the tie rod 10. A frangible container 15 is mounted in the casing 11 and is normally held against endwise movement by a spring 16 which disposed in one end of the casing and engages a washer 17 which in turn engages the end of the frangible container. The washer is preferably made of felt or other suitable material. The

In order to effect the release of the fire extinguishing liquid in case of fire a hammer 25 is carried by an arm 26 actuated by a spring 27. The arm 26 is pivoted on lugs 28 carried by the clamp 12 and the spring tends toswing the arm about its pivot in a clockwise direction. The arm is normally held against actuation of the spring by means of a fusible link 30 of any suitable construction which engages at one end a lug 31 carried by the arm and at its other end a lug 32 formed on or carried by the end of the casing 11.
In case a fire breaks out under the hood of a vehicle, the rise in temperature will cause the fusible link to give way thus permitting the arm 26 and the hammer 25 to swing under the action of the spring 27. The hammer will thus be actuated into violent contact with the casing 11 and the contact of the hammer with the casing will cause the container to be broken thus releasing the fire extinguishing liquid therefrom.
From the foregoing description it will be evident that a fire extinguisher has been so designed and so mounted that it will operate automatically in case of fire. It will be obvious that the automatically operable extinguisher is not limited for use under the hood of a motor vehicle but may be used anywhere such a device is needed and may be supported in upright position as well as hori- Zontally.
Although one specific embodiment of the invention has been particularly shown and described, it will be understood that the invention is capable of modification and that changes in the construction and in the arrangement of the various cooperating parts may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention, as expressed in the following claims.
What I claim is:
1. In combination, a supporting element, clamping and supporting means extending laterally therefrom for embracing and securing a casing and a frangible fire extinguisher container, said casing surrounding said container and having openings to permit the escape of fire extinguishing fluid when the frangible container is broken, a hammer pivotally mounted on said means, a spring for actuating said hammer in a direction tobreak said container, and heat controlled means connected to the casing and hammer for holding said hammer against actuation.
2. In combination, a casing, a frangible container therein, means for supporting said casing and container, a hammer arranged to strike said casing and break the container, means for actuating the hammer against the casing, and heat controlled means for holding the hammer against actuation, said casing having openings to permit the escape of fire extinguishing fluid when the container is broken.
3. In combination, a casing, a supporting member, clamps carried by the supporting member and embracing the casing, a hammer pivoted to one of said clamps, a spring for actuating the hammer in a direction to strike the casing, heat releasable means for holding the hammer against actuation, and a frangible container in said casing and contacting the portion engageable by the hammer, said casing having openings to permit the escape of fire extinguishing fluid.
