This invention relates to a new and useful machine for cutting fur pelts, or other similar materials having hair, fibers or pile extending from the surface.
5 This invention is intended to increase production by eliminating existing retarding conditions.
It is known that in cutting fur or any material that resembles fur in nature, the rapidity of cutting is retarded by the presence of hair or fiber 10 within the cutting sphere. That is to say, the hair bunches or mats at the cutting zone and prevents the cutter from functioning properly, and the result is that the fur will be torn or cut raggedly. Suitable means may be employed to prevent this condition, as by spreading, combing, blowing or parting the hair at the cutting edge, this bunching or matting of the hair is prevented. This leaves a clear pathway for the cutter, enabling the operator to continue with the cutting operation unhampered and without cutting the hairs or pile.
There are many ways in which parting, combing, blowing or spreading the hair may be accomplished, and it has been found that the most reliable method is to utilize a blower or suction device. This eliminates mechanical contrivances in the vicinity of the cutter to which the fur hair or fibrous material might become attached.
While this machine is primarily intended for cutting fur, it may also be used for cutting any other material which because of its nature would normally produce stray cuttings, and destroy the hair or pile when being cut by methods heretofore in use.
The objects of the invention are:
To produce a device and means for cutting fur,
or any material that resembles fur in nature at a much greater speed than is at present done by hand.
To provide a machine for cutting fur, or any material that resembles fur in nature while preserving the tufts of the fur from damage.
To provide means to comb, part, blow or spread the hair of the fur, or other material that resembles fur in nature in advance of a cutting blade associated with said means.
To provide means for removing stray hair or other particles left by the cutter in a fur cutting machine.
These advantageous features are accomplished by the novel and practical construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter disclosed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, constituting an essential part of the disclosure, and in which:

- 1, secured to the base 35, constitute the framework of the machine. The motor 27 may be conveniently located. One end of the motor shaft 26 controls mechanism 24, for operating mechanism'20. The other end of the motorshaft 26, controls fan 28. Fan 28 is attached to one end of air duct 29, the other end of said duct terminating in sphere of the cutter '7. The function of the fan will be described later in the specification. Shaft, 23', 1 driven by bevel gear 20, carries a worm 21. Worm 21 drives a worm gear 15 on shaft 13. Shaft '13 carries eccentric cam 12 which drives the eccentric head '10, and eccentric knife rod 4. V The cutter 7 is clamped on to knife rod 4, with clamps 37. The clamp 37 is made removable by fastening with two pins 5 and tightened by-screw fi. The cutter guard 8, is fastened to bracket 1 by means of screws 3. Guide 31 is attached to base 36 by means of screws 32. Bearings 16 and 17 support eccentric cam shaft 13. Bearing 17 is a combined bearing for cam shaft .13 and worm shaft 23.
In Fig. 6, the base plate 36, the base 35, and the bracket 48 constitute the framework of the machine. The motor may be conveniently located with respect to the machine. One end of motor shaft operates a fan. The other end of motor shaft controls flexible shaft 47 from which a rotary cutter is operated. Fan to be attached to one end of air duct 29, the other end of said duct 29, to terminate in sphere of cutter 45.
The machine operates in the following manner:
The motor is started by means of a foot switch. Said motor drives the bevelgears which reduce the speed and axial rotation of the shaft carrying. the worm. The worm acting through the worm no gear again changes thespeed and axial rotation of a shaft carrying an eccentric cam. This cam causes a push rod carrying a cutter to move vertically up and down with respect to the base of the machine. The fur or fibrous material or any other material that resembles fur in nature is fed through over the guide. As the material leaves the guide, the hair of this material is parted, and the fur pelt cut. The cutter, guide and blower serve to affect a cutting operation.
During the cutting of fur, fibrous material or any other material which resembles fur in nature, the hair of such material is parted, combed, blown or spread out at the place of cutting by means of an air blast shown in the drawing (Fig. 5). The hair or fibers of the material may be parted, combed, blown or spread out by blowing, suction, mechanical or other means. Stray hair or lint accumulates within the cutting sphere during the cutting of fur or fibrous material. This stray material is then removed by means'of the air duct shown in the drawing. In some instances it may be best to blow this material away from the cutting sphere, in other instances it may be desired to draw this material through an air duct. In order to accomplish either of these removals, the type of fan may be changed to suit the method used.
The speed at which the cutter operates may be changed for the requirements of the material to be cut. furs require different cutting speeds than others, and it is essential that a correct speed be had, or the hair will likely fall out.
Although I have described my improvements with considerable detail and with respect to certain particular forms of my invention, I do not desire to be limited to the details since many changes and modifications in the form, arrangements, proportions and sizes thereof may well be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention in its broadest aspect.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A cutting machine for cutting fur, fibrous -material or any material that resembles fur in nature, comprising a bed, a driving means attached to said bed, a fan attached to and under the control of said driving means, a mechanism under the control of said driving means for the reduction of speed and change of axial rotation, a worm gear operated by said mechanism, an eccentric cam, an eccentric push rod carrying a cutting device actuated by said eccentric cam, an
air duct one end of which terminates in said fan,
Experience has shown that certain the other end of which terminates in the sphere of the cutting mechanism.
2. In combination with a fur or fibrous material cutting machine, a cutter and a means for suction to part the hair of the fur, fibrous material hair or the hair of any material that resembles fur in nature, said means comprising a device to produce an air blast adjacent to and in the path of and in advance of the cutter.
3. In combination with a fur or fibrous material cutting machine, a cutter and means operated by same operating mechanism as for cutting machine for parting the hair in the path of and in advance of the cutter.
4. In combination with a fur or fibrous material cutting machine, a cutter and a means for partingof fur or fibrous material or the hair of any other material that resembles fur in nature, to facilitate the cutting of material, and means comprising a device to produce an air blast adjacent to and in the path of and in advance of thecutter.
5. In combination with a furor fibrous material cutting machine, a cutter and means for facilitating rapid cutting, which parts the fur or fibrous material hair, or the hair of any material that resembles fur in nature, in the path of and in advance of the cutter.
6. In combination with a machine for cutting furs, fibrous material or any other material that resembles fur in nature, a cutter and means for parting of fur, or fibrous material hairor the hair of any material that resembles fur in nature, said means being operated by the same means utilized for the operation of the cutting mechanism, and comprising a device to produce an air blast adjacent to and in the path of and in ad- Vance of the cutter. '7. A cutting machine for fur, fibrous material or any other material which resembles fur in nature, comprising a table, a vertically reciprocating cutter operable through said table, and cooperating means for parting the hair of the material being out, said means comprising a device to produce an air blast adjacent to and in the path of and in advance of the cutter.
8. A cutting machine for fur, fibrous material or any other material which resembles fur in nature, comprising a table, a rotary cutter associated with said table, and cooperating means for parting the hair of the material being cut, said means comprising a device to produce an air blast adjacent to and in the path of and in advance of the cutter.
