HIRAM PURDY, OF BURLINGTON, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN FRUIT-JARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 192,453, dated June 26, 1877; application filed April 30, 1877'.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HIRAM PURDY, of Burlington, county of Des Moines, and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fruit-Jars, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a top view of a fruit-jar to which my improvement has been applied. Fig. 2 is aside view of the same, partly in section, through the line w r, Fig. 1, to show the construetion.
The object of this invention is to furnish fruit-jars which shall be so constructed that they may be easily and quickly closed airtight, and which may be conveniently opened when desired.
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawing, and then pointed out in the claim.

A represents a fruit-jar the neck of which is beveled or tapered, and has a shallow groove, a formed around it, to receive a pack ing, B, made of rubber or other suitable elastic material. Around the neck of thejar A, at about the middle of the groove a, is formed a narrow groove, a
U is the cover or cap, the rim of which is beveled or flared to correspond with the bevel of the neck of the jar A, so that when the said cap 0 is pressed down upon the neck of thejar A its beveled rim may press the packing B snugly upon the said neck and form an air-tight joint. To further insure the joint between the cap and neck being air-tight a narrow bend or shoulder, 0 is formed around the inner surface of the rim of the cap, to embed itself in the packing B and press it against the neck ofthejar A. In the center of the cap 0 is formed a hole, 0 to allow the air to escape while pressing the said cap down into place, and to allow the air to enter when the cap is to be taken ofl.
The hole 0 is closed by a rubber plug, D, which is pressed down into and is held in said hole 0 by a band, E, of rubber or metal, which crosses the top of the cap 0, and the ends of which have holes formed in them to receive the lugs or projections a formed upon the neck of thejar A. are notched to receive the band E and prevent it from having any lateral movement.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with body A, having grooves a a and lugs a of the packing B, notched cover, having bead c, and the band E, having holes to receive said lugs, as and for the purpose specified.
