Application September 19,1929 Serial No. 393,610
2 Claims. (Cl. 206-52) My invention is an improved film package, and is designed to check or minimize the deterioration of motion picture film commonly resulting from excessive drying out thereof in storage, and to facilitate the insertion and withdrawal of film rolls into suitable housings provided with identifying indicia which is shielded from injury.
In accordance with my invention a roll of motion picture film, preferably wound upon a spool or roll, is held against substantial unwinding by tangential engagement with its periphery of tangential members of a sealed housing containing a humidifying element for n'loistening the air in the housing which circulates around the film through the spaces between the periphery of the film roll and the angles of the walls formed by the tangential members. The housing is pro vided with a detachable closure, and a wall of the housing body or closure is recessed for the application thereto of identifying indicia, preferably inscribed upon an adhesive label secured in the recess and protected against defacement by the wall projections surrounding the recess.
The humidifying element preferably consists of a sheet of fibrous material located within the housing but spaced from the film compartment thereof by a 'sheetof impermeable material having flanges turned therefrom to space such sheet from the wall of the housing and prevent the compression of the moistened fibrous material. Such sheet fits loosely Within the housing so as to permit ready removal, moistening and insertion of the humidifying. element, and has an edge or edges spaced from the housing wall so as to permit free circulation of air over the humiditying element and into the film compartment without danger of wetting the film.
By my improvements inexpensive means are provided for maintaining a roll of film in a soft and flexible condition for a long period of time, for preventing the unwinding of the film roll, for permitting ready grasping of the film roll formsertion or withdrawal in the housing by entering the fingers between the periphery of the roll and the angles formed by the housing walls, for remoistening the humidifying element and readily locating the desired film.
The characteristic features and advantages of my improvements will more fully appear from the following description and the accompanying drawing of illustrative embodiments of apparatus embodying my invention.
In the drawing, Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a film housing with a film filed therein in accordance with my invention, the lid being removed; Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the housing and film roll shown in Fig. 1 taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 3; Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a bottom plane vi'ewof the housing; and Fig. I 5 is a vertical sectional view of a modified form of apparatus embodying my invention.
As illustrated in the drawing a square container or housing body is formed of impermeable material, such as non-corrosive sheet metal, by bending the side walls 1 upward from the bottom section'2 and sealing the joints 3 formed by the normal edges of the side walls 1. The exterior of the tangential wall forming the top edge of the box provides an extended area for the notation of filing index indicia, which is preferably placed upon a label 4 cemented to the box.
The central portion of the body wall 2 may be depressed below its edges 5 so as to provide a protected wall portion for the notation of detailed subject matter indicia which is preferably inscribed upon a label cemented thereto. The recessing of the wall portion bearing the subject matter or table of contents label prevents the defacernent thereof, particularly when the housings are filed in rows of containers having their broad surfaces in contact.
A humidifying element, such as a moistened sheet of fibrous material 8, suitably blotting paper, is placed in the bottom of the container or housing and a sheet of impermeable material 9, such as non-corrosive'metal, is placed above the humidifying element and spaced therefrom by downturned edge flanges 9'. The edges 9" of the sheet 9 transverse to the fianges 9' are spaced from the container Walls 1, and the sheet 9 is sufiiciently spaced from the bottom of the housing to permit free circulation of, air from the upper compartment 10 of the housing over the humidifying element and back to the com partment 1G.
A roll or film 11 preferably wound on the spool or roll 12 is inserted in the compartment 10.
The walls 1 of the housing lie tangent to and engage the periphery of the film roll, and consecry of the film roll, so that the latter can be readily grasped for insertion or withdrawal.
The top edges of the housing body are slightly inset and have telescoped thereon the flanges 13' of a closure 13, which forms a comparatively tight seal. The external surfaces of the flanges 13, are substantially flush with the external surfaces of the lower portions of the walls 1 so that the boxes stand vertically when placed on edge.
As illustrated in Fig. 5, the housing may have.
its opening along an edge thereof in the plane of the side of the film roll instead of parallel with the film roll, and such housing opening is sealed boxes are filed on edge in rows; the boxes being preferably so arranged thatthe numbers, months and years on the boxes are aligned in sequence. By reference to the index label 5 the desired roll may be readily found and the particular portion thereof desired determined by reference to the label 6 which is, of course, normally hidden when the boxes are filed in rows.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. A film package comprising a film roll, a housing for said roll having walls tangential to the periphery of said roll, said walls forming corners spaced from, the periphery of said roll and a flat sheet in said housing parallel with a wall thereof and spaced from a wall thereof and spacing said roll from said housing Wall to permit circulation between said film roll and housing.
2. A film package comprising a substantially square metallic housing, a flat sheet in said housing parallel with a substantially square wall thereof, said sheet having lips bent therefrom and spacing it from the parallel wall, an absorbent sheet housed between said sheet and wall, and a film roll having spaced peripheral points thereof engaged by walls of said housing normal to said first named wall, said package having open spaces between the periphery of the film roll and the angles formed by the housing walls contacting with said periphery.
