W I NDOW FRAME Filed June 1, 1952 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented Aug. 22, 1933 UNITED srArss PATENT OFFICE 4 Claims.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in window frames.
Building contractors or carpenters usually buy the window frames necessary for the particular job or jobs on which they are working from local lumber dealers or milling concerns. These lumber dealers or milling concerns usually assemble window frames of various dimensions on a quantity production basis, and this is made possible in view of the fact that they usually buy the various casing members, jamb members, stops, and the like, already finished and cut to predetermined lengths, from a concern or concerns located frequently at distant points, which points are usually selected due to their proximity to supplies of unfinished lumber, and the like. The lumber dealers or milling concerns are desirous of utilizing more or less unskilled labor for as sembling window frames and for that reason, it is necessary for the concerns which originally finish and out the various window frame elements to present these elements to the assembling concerns in condition for quick and easy assembly by unskilled help.
It therefore is the primary object of this invention to provide a window frame which may be quickly and easily assembled by lumber dealers or milling concerns without necessitating the use of skilled labor and with the assurance that the window frames will be true and made in complete compliance with certain requirements or dimensions.
It is a further object of this invention to provide a window frame construction which is entirely weatherproof and waterproof.
Other material and specific objects will be determined during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a front perspective view of one corner of a window frame embodying this invention;
Figure 2 is a rear perspective view of the same corner of the window frame shown in Fig. 1;
Figure 3 is an exploded view of the various elements as they are seen in Fig. 2 prior to separa tion of the same;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary horizontal sectional view of the window frame; and
Figure 5 is a detailed perspective view of one corner portion of a vertical jamb member.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration, is shown a preferred embodiment of this invention, the numeral 10 designates an outside head or horizontal casing member, the rear face of which is provided with a plurality of longitudinally extending grooves which are suitably and uniformly spaced with respect to each other.
Figure l discloses an outside vertical or side casing member 12, which has its upper edge flushly engaging the lower longitudinal edge of the head casing member 10. This vertical casing member 12 also is provided with a plurality of 5 lon itudinally extending grooves 13.
Associated with the outer head or horizontal casing member 10 is ahead or horizontal jamb member 14. This jamb member is longitudinally grooved at 15' to receive a window sash or parting 7 stop 16. One longitudinal edge of the jamb member 14 is provided with a plurality of longitudinally extending ribs 17 which are adapted to be received in similarly shaped grooves'18 of a horizontally extending or top blind stop 19. (This blind stop is provided with a longitudinally extending tongue 20 adapted to be received within one of the grooves 11 of the head casing member 10.
Operatively associated with the outer vertical or side casing member 12 is a vertical or side jamb member 21. This jamb member is provided with a longitudinally extending groove 22 intended to receive a window or parting stop 23. It will be seen that by inspecting Fig. l, the jamb members 14 and 21 are positioned relative to each other so that the window or parting stops 16 and 23 will be in vertical alignment with respect to each other, or will occupy the same central vertical plane. One longitudinal edge of the vertical or side jamb member 21 is provided with a plurality of longitudinally extending tongues 24, which are received in similarly shaped grooves 25 formed in a vertical or side blind stop 26. The outer face of this blind stop 26 is formed with a longitudinally extending tongue 27, adapted to be received within one of the grooves 13 formed in the vertical or side casing member 12.
It will be noted by inspecting Figs. 2 and 3, that the vertical jamb member 21 is formed with a transversely extending groove 28, adapted to receive an end portion of the horizontal or top jamb member 14. This interlocking relation of the jamb members is provided to form a very secure and permanent connection between these members. In Fig. 5, one end of the groove 28 terminates in a cut-out portion 29 formed in the vertical edge of the jamb member 21. This cutout portion 29 is intended to receive the end portion of the head or horizontal blind stop 19 to form a substantially interlocking fit between this horizontal blind stop and the vertical jamb. It has been stated that the horizontal blind stop 19 is formed with a tongue and groove type of connection with the horizontal jamb 14. The blind stop 19, therefore, functions to produce a very rigid connection between the two jamb members 14 and 21. This top or horizontal blind stop 19 projects beyond the vertical or side jamb member 21, and terminates flush with the side face of the frame formed by the aligned edges of the outer casing members 10 and 12, as best seen in Fig. 2. This blind stop 19 is positioned so that it will overlap or bridge the seam 30 formed between the abutting edge portions of the side casing members 10 and 12. If desired, a suitable form of fastening member, such as nails 31, may be driven throughthe blind stop 19 and into the vertical or side casing member 12 to prevent separation of the two casing members. The vertical blind stop 26 has its upper end terminating in flush engagement with the lower longitudinal edge of the top or horizontal blind stop 19. It will therefore be seen that the blind stop 19 projects beyond the vertical blind stop 26 for connection with a portion of at least one of the casing members.
It will be seen that this window frame structure may be quickly and easily assembled from the various elements shown and described by unskilled labor and without danger of not producing a true window frame, and one which will fully comply with all specified dimensions. t will further be seen that one of the blind stop members is employed for interconnecting both of the jamb members and both of the casing members with the result that a very rigid structure will be provided. The various tongue and groove type of connections between the blind stop members and the jamb and casing members will form a weatherproof and waterproof window frame.
It is to be understood that the form of this invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts, may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described the invention, I claim:
1. In a window or like frame, a pair of outer casing members, a pair of jamb members, and a horizontal blind stop connected to and extending the entire horizontal dimension of all of the casing members and all of the jamb members.
2. In a window or like frame structure, a side and a head casing member, a jamb member associated with each of the casing members, a blind stop interposed between each casing member and its respective jamb member, and tongue and groove connections between the blind stop members and their respective casing and jamb members, the head blind stop member also being connected to the side casingand jamb members.
3. In a window or like frame, a pair of right angularly arranged casing members, a pair of right angularly arranged blind stop members connected to the respective casing members by tongue and groove formations, a pair of right angularly arranged jamb members connected to the respective blind stop members by tongue and groove formations, and one of said jamb members having a transversely extending cut out portion formed therein to receive a portion of the blind stop member arranged at right angles thereto.
4. In a window or like frame, a pair of outer casing members, a jamb member for each casing member, and a horizontally extending blind stop engaging all of said casing and jamb members and having a keyed connection with all but one of said members.
