1 Claim.
more particularly to a valve stem construction whereby a valve stem of other than the usual standard construction of valve stem may be equipped to use a standard valve insides.
An object of the invention is to provide a two piece valve stem and construction of such character that pneumatic tire tubes equipped with such stems may be interchangeably used on different types of wheels.
Another object is to provide a two piece valve stem construction whereby the tire tube having such valve stem can be used on wheels such as disc or other wheels where it is necessary to have the portion of the valve stem containing the valve insides extending toward and located adjacent to the rim flange of the wheel.
Another object is to provide a two piece valve stem construction formed of a relatively few number of parts which are easily assembled and economically manufactured.
Additional objects and advantages will appear hereinafter.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein- Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of the assembled two piece valve stem, one of the valve stem members and a portion of the other stem member being shown in section;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary elevation of one of the valve stem members;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the adapter taken on line 33 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view of one of the valve stem members; and
Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the valve stem member shown in Fig. 4, the head thereof being omitted.
As is well known, the present type of standard valve stem is made of a tubular piece of brass which has an externally threaded portion and is provided with an outer end part of reduced diameter. The valve stem is formed adjacent its outer end with a tapered shoulder arranged in the central bore through the stem, which shoulder is adapted to receive a portion of a standard valve insides. These valve stems are made of brass in order to permit of an easy insertion or removal of the valve insides and prevent the insides becoming frozen within the stem after they have been inserted therein for a long period of time and subjected to weather conditions.-
In my copending application, Serial No. 304,- 954, filed Sept. 10, 1928, I describe a two piece This invention relates to a valve stem and valve stem wherein one of the parts is made of steel or other suitable metal and the other part,
be set forth in the present application. There are certain types of wheels which require that the portion of the valve stem containing the valve insides be located adjacent the rim flange of the wheel. This has necessitated the use of different stems upon tire tubes which are to be used with such wheels, as heavy disc wheels for example, than are used upon the ordinary spoke type of wheel. The present invention discloses a two piece valve stem construction including a stem member which may be used upon tire tubes irrespective of the type of wheels with which the tubes are to be used and which may have associated therewith different stem members in the nature of adapters to take care of the different conditions arising in connection with the diilerent types of wheels.
The two piece valve stem comprises a tubular member 1 provided with an internal bore 2 and having adjacent one of its ends a head 3 which is adapted to cooperate with a spreader, later to be described, for clamping portions of an inner tube between the head and the spreader. The other end 4 of the stem member 1 is externally threaded while the bore 2 adjacent such end is enlarged being connected to the smaller portion of the bore by a tapered shoulder 5. The
The member 10 has its other end provided with 11 a straight portion 13 having an outwardly ex- The outer end tending annular rib 14 and intermediate such rib 14 and the reduced end 15 of the straight portion are longitudinally extending flats 16. The bore 11 of the member 10 is internally threaded at 17 adjacent the end of the portion 13 which threads cooperate with the threads 18 arranged upon one end of a tubular member 19 which has an annular shoulder 20 at its other end. A packing gasket 21 is arranged on the tubular member 19 so as to be held thereon by the shoulder 20 and when the member 19 is screwed into the lower end of the portion 13 of the member 10 the packing gasket 21, which is of slightly greater diameter than the reduced portion 15 of the member 10, is compressed between the shoulder 20 and the end of the member 10. An attaching nut 22, the enlarged portion of which is internally threaded at 23, is provided adjacent its reduced portion with inwardly extending spaced arms or ribs 24 and 25 which define an annular groove receiving the annular rib 14 on the portion 13 or the member 10. The member 10 is preferably assembled with the nutas a unit, this being effected by inserting the portion 13 of the member 10 through the nut'until the flange 14 engages the arm or rib 25 and then forcing the arm or rib 24 down upon the rib 14. When the member 10 is to be assembled in the valve stem member 1 the end of the portion 13 is positioned within the upper end of the bore 2 of the member 1 with the flats 16 of the member 10 engaging the portions 8 at the base of the notch 7 in the upper end of the member 1, while the enlarged end of the attaching nut 22 flts over the end of the member 1 and the threads 23 thereof may be engaged with the threads 4 of the member 1. Rotation of the attaching nut 22 will force the end portion 13 of the member 10 into the bore 2 of the member 1 and at the same time will move the spreader 9 down into clamping position upon the inner tube.
The connection between the attaching nut and the member 10 being a swivelled connection there will be no rotation of the member 10 but simply valve stem member 1, the spreader and the attaching sleeve may be made of steel or any other suitable material while the member 10 may be made of a suitable non-corroding metal, the purpose ,of such an arrangement being clearly understood. v
While the member 10 has been described herein as of the type wherein the valve insides would be located adjacent the rim flange of the wheel it should be understood that. any other form of member is within the contemplation of the invention and that by way of example a straight member might equally as well have been disclosed.
The invention is susceptible of such modifications and adaptations as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is: i
In a two piece valve stem construction for a pneumatic tire, a tubular stem part provided with a longitudinal bore therethrough and hav-,
ing an enlarged portion and a reduced portion, the walls of both portions being parallel to each other and lying in a plane extending longitudinally of said part, a second tubular stem part having a bore therethrough and a reduced end portion formed of a headed sleeve secured in the bore of said part and extending outwardly thereof and a gasket arranged on said sleeve intermediate the head thereof and the end of the stem part, said reduced portion of the second named stem part being arranged in the reduced portion of the bore of the first named stem part with the packing member engaging the wall thereof, and means of securing said stem parts together.
