Abstract

378,617. Setting rivets. A.T.S. CO., Ltd. and WYLIE, H. N., 5, Clement's Inn, Strand, London. July 14, 1931, No. 20208. [Class 43.] In methods for setting tubular rivets wherein a mandrel is drawn through the point 9 of the rivet towards its flanged end 8 which is supported on an anvil 14, the rivet and mandrel are so formed that on endwise compression of the rivet, the rim of its point is bent inwardly towards the flange and the stem 7 adjacent'the point is bulged outwardly forming an annular beading 6. The mandrel head 11 may have a diameter greater than the rim of the point 9, Fig. 1, thus forming a shoulder 15 adapted.to exert endwise pressure on the point. The head may be drawn into the rivet, Fig. 4, and thus expand its walls radially. The mandrel may then be withdrawn right through the bore, or the head may carry a flange preventing complete withdrawal, and the mandrel stem 10 may be detached leaving the head 11 in the rivet to strengthen it. A portion of the stem left may be screw-threaded and the head may be secured by a nut. Where work is to be joined by opposed lines of rivets, these may be connected in pairs by filling the rivets with plugs tapped to receive a connecting wire secured at the ends by screwed nuts. The plugs may have hexagonal heads and the connection may be a bar or tube.
