EXERCISING AND AMUSEMENT DEVICE Filed Oct. 10, 1931 Q mm Edna Yoas Patented Aug. 15, 1933' PATENT) OFFICE EXERCISING AND AMUSEMENT DEVICE Edna Yoes, Oklahoma City, Okla.
Application October 10,
3 Claims.
This invention relates to exercising and amusement devices and more particularly to rocker horses, and it has for its object to provide a device of very simple and economical construction which will have a progressive forward movement under the bouncing action imparted thereto by a child.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a device of this character so constructed that discarded automobile springs may be utilized in the manufacture thereof.
An additional object of the invention is to provide simple and inexpensive means for adjusting the seat, and consequently the weight of the rider, with respect to the springs, so that children of varying weights may be accommodated, while at the same time the proper operation and action of the rocker horse may be maintained.
A further object of the invention is the provi- 20. sion of a rocker horse of the character described so constructed that the device will not turn over even with the greatest bouncing motion that can be created by the rider.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in the detailed description which follows:
In the accompanying drawing- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a rocker horse constructed in accordance with the invention and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the base member. Like numerals designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing.
Referring to the drawing, 5 designates a centrally disposed beam that is notched, as indicated at 6 and 7, adjacent its ends for the reception of cross bars 8 and 9. These cross bars carry ball bearing casters 10 and 11 adjacent their outer ends, and the length of the cross bars is such that it is not possible for a child to upset the device under any bouncing movement that he can create. An important feature of the invention resides in providing the forward-end of the beam with an inclined front face 12 which lies preferably at about the angle illustrated in the drawing, and against which is secured a flat or leaf spring 13. This spring may be secured to the face of the beam by bolts or in any other suitable way, but I prefer to use the straps 14 for this purpose. A filling block 15 is provided with a plurality of holes 16 for the passage of bolts 17. These bolts traverse the springs 13, filling block 15, and a seat platform 18. This, platform preferably carries an imitation horses head 19 and a guard 20, the latter acting in conjunction with.
1931. Serial No. 568,139
the rear end of the platform 18 toconstitute a seat.
When a child, seated upon the rear end of the platform 18, bounces up and down, a progressive forward movement is imparted to the rocker horse. It will be observed that the angle of the spring and the angle of the front face 12 of the beam 5 is such that the downward movement of the seat is in an almost vertical line, while upon the rebound, the movement of the spring 13 is in considerably more of a horizontal direction than during the downward movement of the seat. The result is that a very considerable forward impulse is imparted to the base beam 5, and the structure, as a whole, is caused to move progressively forward.
By adjusting the block 15 forwardly or rearwardly, the seat platform may be adjusted to varying angles of inclination in accordance with the weight of the child using the same.
The structure is a very simple and economical one which may be manufactured at a very slight cost. This economy of manufacture is promoted by the fact that the arrangement of parts is such that discarded automobile springs may be utilized at 13 there being large quantities of these springs already available in junk yards throughout the country.
It is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise construction set forth, but that it includes within its purview whatever changes fairly come within either the terms or the spirit of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A device of the character described comprising a horizontally disposed base member having its front face so formed as to present a straight line lying at an angle of substantially 45degrees with respect to the horizontal, a wheeled mounting for said base member, a flat leaf spring lying in snugly contacting relation to the angle front end of said'base member, fastening devices for resisting movement of said spring away from said inclined face substantially throughout the length of the latter, a platform having a seat at its rear end, and an imitation horses head at its forward end, and an adjusting means connecting the platform with the free end of the leaf spring, comprising a triangularly shaped block having a group of holes formed there through in a longitudinal row, and fastening devices passing through said holes and through said platform and through said spring, said holes exceeding said fastening devices in number whereby through adjustment of the longitudinal position of said block with respect to the seat platform, the inclination of the seat platform with respect to the spring may be adjusted.
2. A device of the character described comprising a horizontally disposed base member having its front face so formed as to present a straight line lying at an angle of substantially 45 degrees with respect to the horizontal, a wheeled mounting for said base member, a fiat leaf spring lying in snugly contacting relation to the angle front end of said base member, fastening devices for resisting movement of said spring away from said inclined face substantially throughout the length of the latter, a platform having a seat at its rear end, and an imitation horses head at its forward end, and an adjusting means connecting the platform with the free end of the leaf spring, comprising a triangularly shaped block, and means for adjusting the said block endwise of the said spring and for adjusting the platform endwise of the said block to thereby vary the longitudinal positions of the said platform with respect to the spring and also to vary the angular positions of the platform with respect to the spring.
3. A device of the character described comprising a wheeled base portion having its forward end shaped to a rearwardly inclined angle, a flat spring secured to said angle face of the base and having its upper end free, a seat element upon the free end of said spring, said seat element comprising a seat platform, a guard about the rear end thereof, and an imitation horses head at the forward end thereof, the normal angle of the spring being such that the rebound of the seat acts through said spring to impart a forward drag to the wheeled base, a wedge shaped block between the seat element and spring, and members traversing the seat element, block and spring.
