A second metal angle member 4S is provided, which has an upright wall or web 47 of the saine length or substantially the same length as the walls 27 and 4l of the members 28 and 49 respectively, and which is adapted to lie at the outer surface of the wall 41, immediately beneath the flange of the supporting member 26, as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings. The height of the wall 47 is considerably less than the height of the wall 41. The angle member includes also a horizontal supporting and attaching flange 48, which may be referred to as the upper flange, sinceit is spaced above the flange 43 of the member 40. In assemblage the edge 50 of the angle member 48v is dispose-:l flush with the top edge 42 of the wall or web 41 of the member 40, as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings, with the reinforcing uprights or plates 41 and 47 in abutment with each other, and in relation to the wall 27 above described, and as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings. At opposite sides of the medial portion of 'the wall 27 and the reinforcing uprights 41 and 47, there are provided on the walls or uprigts 27, 41 and 47 respectively a series of openings 52, 53 and 54, which align to receive rivets 55, by means of which to rivet the plate or wall parts 27, 41 and 47 in abutting relatively reinforcing relation, asshown in the drawings. This spaces the horizontal lower and upper flanges 43 and 48 in spaced parallel relation, and said flanges are similarly formed at their marginal portions, so that the peripheral end edges thereof lie in the same vertical planes. Between said horizontal flanges is provided a space within which a wood illler piece 59 is disposed.'
The angle clip-like draw bar 23 includesy the attaching flange or leg 80, having openings 61 therethrough, adapted to align with openings 63, 64 and 65 in the walls or upright plates 27, 41 and 47 respectively, for receiving rivets 68, as shown in the drawings. .The draw bar clip 23 also includes the horizontal draw bar body or flange 68 which extends horizontally forward above and in contact with `the attaching flange 35 of the end sill member 26, and which draw bar body is provided with openings 70 therein adapted to align with opening 71 in the outer marginal portion of the flange 35, and thru which openings rivets 25ZL are extended to secure the draw bar body 68 in a reinforced braced relation as close to the outer end of the draw bar body as convenient. The outer portion of the draw bar ilange or body 68 is provided with a coupling pin inserting opening 72, through which the coupling pin 73 is adapted to be detachably inserted, so that the head 74 of said coupling pin rests on top of the draw bar body 68, in accordance with usual construction. The recess 22 is cut in the mine car floor D in order to' accommodate the draw bar body 68 in the relation of structure above described, and as is shown in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings,
The upper and lower flanges 48 and 43 respectively, receive the fiat filler block 59 therebetween in substantially a conforming relation. The rear surface 75 of the illler block 59 abuts against the front surface of the lower portion of the reinforcing wall 4l, as shown in Figure l, and in this position the outer marginal portions of the filler kblock project beyond the outer edges of the said flanges 43 and 48, as shown in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings, so that the abutting forces will be taken up in the ller block 59, which is preferably of wood, although it may be of other material, and more yieldable than the other metal parts of the composite bumper or end sill structure. rihe flanges 43 and 48 are respectively provided with openings 78 and 79, in their outer ends, along the medial line thereof, through which the coupling pin 73 extends, as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings. The filler block 59 is provided with an opening 80 therethrough, which is elongated along the axis of the mine car, and thru which the coupling pin shank also extends. The filler piece 59 engages at its upper and lower surfaces in sliding contact with the faces of the flanges 43 and 48.
A channel-shaped metal bumper piece 82, best shown in detail in Figure 10, is provided, including upper and lower horizontal flanges 83 and 84, and a bight portion 85 which is concaveconvexly arcuated in the plane of the flanges 83 and 84. The channel piece is straddled above and below the ilanges 43 and 48, in the relation shown in Figure 1, with the inside surface of the arcuated bight or connecting portion 85 abutting against the forward projecting part of the filler block 59, as shown in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings. The flanges 83 and 84 are provided with elongated openings 87 therein, adjacent the free ends of the flanges, through which bolts 88 are disposed; the bolts 88 being detachably connected through suitable openings 89 and 90 in the flanges 43 and 48 respectively, and two elongated openings 91 in the illler block 59, as is shown in the details of these parts in Figures 6, 7, and 8 of the drawings. The flanges 83 and 84 of the channelshaped metal bumper U2 are each provided with elongated openings 93, adapted to align with the openings 78, 79 and 80 above described, to receive the shank of the detachable coupling pin, in the relation shown in Figure 1 o1" the drawings.
It is quite apparent that shock occasioned by the bumping of the end sill structure, at the bumper member 82 will be transmitted to the rather yieldable filler block 59, without placing a strain or shearing eiect upon the coupling pin 73; it being understood that the bumper channel 82 may move relative to the upper and lower be supported in a protected relation inwardly out of obstructing relation with the bumping parts of the end sill, as shown in Figure 2, by providing a substantially U-shaped retaining bolt 97, slidably supported at the body portion 98 thereof in a series of aligned openings 99 provided through the three thicknesses of the plates 27, 41 and 47; the bolt 97 at the inner side of the end sill below the mine car bottom having a retaining extension 100 transverse thereto, and forwardly of the reinforcing Wall 47 being provided with a normally downturned latch extension 101 provided with an enlargement 102 on the lower end thereof. By gravity the bolt 97 assumes an inverted U-shaped position, with the head 102 of the extension 101 spaced above the horizontal upper flange 48 for arenas-@1o e distance less than the thickness ofthe end uns oithe chain 95, s0 that, as shown in Figures and of thedrawings, the chain when inoperative may belinked over this extension 101` and retained inlanyout of the Way position upon thefendsill. In amine car the combination of an end sill having a releasable coupling member, a chain connectedwith the releasable coupling member, a latch-like lever pivoted upon the end sill having an end adapted to be moved for releasably supporting said end of the chain to hold the chain inoperative upon the end sill, said end sill including a bumper construction below the chain when the latter is inoperatively supported.

In a mine car bumper and end sill construction the combination with a mine car4 frame includingside beams, an upright end wall secured? which is appreciably higher than .the upright ilange of the other angle member, the upright flanges of said angle memberseach being of substantially the same `length as'the end wall and being rigidly secured substantially throughout their entire lengths to each other and to the said end wall, with the higher upright flange abutting against vthe rear surface ofthe rear wall and the shorter upright ilange abutting against the rear surface of the higher uprightV flange, the top edges of said upright flanges of said angle members lying substantially flush so that the horizontal ilanges thereof are disposed in relatively spacedrelation at the lower ends of said upright flanges, and a cushioning bumper member associated with the horizontal flanges of the angle members.

In an end sill construction for mine cars, a rear upright wall having end attaching portions to be connected to the side beams of a car frame, an angle member of substantially the same length as the upright end wall including an upright wall flange abutted throughout its height and length against the rear surface of the end wall and rigidly securedthroughout its height and length therewith, said angle member having a lower horizontal flange extending transverse rearwardly therefrom, a second elongated angle member of substantially the same length as said end wall including an upright flange of less height than the upright flange of the ilrst mentioned angle member and positioned upon the rear surface Vof the lupright flange of the first mentioned angle memberr and secured thereto and to the end wall throughout the length and height thereof, said uprightv flange of the second mentioned angle member being secured to the upper portion of the upright flange of the first mentioned angle meinber, the second mentioned angle member having a lower horizontal flange located in spaced relation above the lower horizontal flange of the first mentioned angle member, a cushioning device associated with said horizontal flanges, and a narrow horizontal draw bar body rigidly secured for transmittal of strains to the rear upright wall and extending rearwardly horizontally in spaced relation above the horizontal flange of the second mentioned angle member at a point about midway between the ends of said horizontal flange last mentioned, and a coupling pin associated with said draw bar body and horizontal flanges of the angle members.

In a mine car .bumper and end sill construction, the combination with side beams, of an end supporting wall carried by said beams, an upper angle member and a lower angle member, each of said angle members including an upright flange and a horizontal flange, the upright flanges of the upper and lower angle members extending upwardly from their horizontal flanges, secured together in overlapped relation one upon `the other and to said end supporting wall, with their upper margins in the same horizontal plane and with their horizontal flanges in spaced relation, and a cushioning filler piece between said horizontal flanges.

In a mine car bumper and end sill construction, the combination with side beams, of an end supporting wall, carried by said beams, provided with an outwardly directed ilange at its upper portion, an upper angle member and a lower angle member, each of said angle members including an upright flange and a horizontal flange, the upright flanges of the upper and lower angle members extending upwardly from their horizon tal flanges, secured together in overlapping relation one upon the other andY to said supporting wall with their upper marginal portions engaging thevunder-side of said outwardly directed ilange of said end supporting wall, and with their horizontal flanges in spaced relation, and a cushioning filler piece between said horizontal flanges.

In a mine car bumper and end sill construction, the combination with side beams, of an end supporting wall carried'by said beams, pro-y vided with a notch at its upper marginal portion intermediate the ends of the wall, an upper angle member and a lower angle member, each of said angle members including an upright flange and a horizontal flange, the upright ilanges of the upper and lower angle members extending upwardly from their horizontal flanges, secured together in overlapping relation one uponthe other and to said supporting wall and provided at their upper maginal portions with notches aligning with the said notch of said end supporting wall, the horizontal flanges of the upper and lower angle members being in spaced relation, a cushioning illler pieceA between said horizontal ilanges, and a draw bar body extending into the notches of said end supporting wall and upright flanges of said upper and lower angle members.
