IMPROVEMENT IN RAILWAY-AXLE-BOX LIDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 192,199, dated June 19, 1877 application filed May 5, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRANCIS O. LEwIs GUSTAVUS SUSEMIHL and HERBERT HILLS HEWITT, of Detroit,'in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Journal Oil Box Cover for Railway-Cars, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section on line 00 w in Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a plan view.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Our invention relates to the covers of journal oil-boxes for railway-cars; audit consists in a cover or lid having projections formed on its edges that are received by grooves formed 1n flanges that project from the sides of the oil-box.
In the drawing, A is an oil-box, consisting of a single casting having the aperture a for receiving the car-axle, and the aperture b for introducing the journal-box and for oiling. At the sides of the box flanges or ears B project a small distance beyond the front and above the top of the box, and are grooved in their inner surfaces from a point opposite the lower corners of the aperture b upward and rearward to therear edge of the flange.
The cover (J is provided with projections 0 that are received by the grooves c in the flanges B. The cover 0 is provided with flanges at its ends, and with acentral longitudinal rib, d, on its outer side, for convenience in open ing or closing it.
The distance between the truck side iron D and the flanges B is less than the distance from the projection c to the edge of the cover, so that it is impossible to remove the cover so long as the box A is in place in the truck.
The apertureb is opened by raising the cover 0 until the projections c are at the upper end of the grooves, when it is tipped and at the same time carried so that it lies partly upon the top of the box A. The cover is shut down by reversing this operation; and should the oiler neglect to shut it, the jarring of the car will cause it to tilt and close itself.
The cover cannot be lost, as it can only be removed from the box by removing the box from the truck; and it cannot easily be bro ken or disarran'ged. v
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The cover 0, having flanged ends and a central rib, d, and provided with the peojections 0, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
2. The cover 0, having projections c, in combination with the box A, having formed upon it the grooved ears B, substantially as shown and described.
FRANCIS C. L. GUSTAVUS SUSEMIHL. HERBERT HILLS HEWITT.
