My invention relates to door operating mechanisms and more particularly to operating mechanisms for elevator doors of the vertical sliding type wherein the door is suspended from a cable or chain that passes over sheaves and is operated by an electric motor.
The invention has for its principal objects t provide a simple and efficient mechanism for driving one of the supporting sheaves for the door operating chain or cable. Another object is to enable the sheave and the driving mechanism therefor to be quickly and easily applied as a unit. Other objects are to provide for lubrication, sirnplicity, cheapness, compactness and durability of suoli door operating units. The invention consists in the door operating unit, and in the construction, combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

l Referring to the accompanying drawing, my invention is shown in connection with avertical sliding counterbalanced door construction which may be used for closing openings in the car or shaft of an elevator or in buildings of different types. As shown in the drawing, said door construction comprises a suitable upright angle iron frame A, and a closure member or door B mounted for vertical sliding movement in said frame. The door B is hung on a idexible member preferably in the form of a sprocket chain C, which passes over sheaves D and E mounted on one of the upper cross-members of the frame A. Said chain is connected at one end to the upper end of the door B and at the other end to a weight F, which is located in a vertical runway provided therefor in one of the side members of the frame A and serves to counterbalance the weight of the door.
The sprocket chain C is operated to open and close the door or gate B by means of a door operating unit G, consisting of the sheave E and a mechanism for driving said sheave. This driving lll unit comprises a main angle-shaped bracket having a base flange 1 adapted to be bolted or other- Wise rigidly secured to the door frame A, and an upstanding flange 2 provided with a circular opening 3 and a circular rib i surrounding saidopen.- 60 ing on the side on which the base flange 1 is located. Rigidly secured to the rib a on the upstanding flange 2 of the main supporting bracket of the door operating unit is an electric motor 5, preferably a reversible torque motor, which can be stalled under full load for several minutes Without injury. Y The armature end of the motor casing is provided with radially extending lugs 6 that are bolted iiatwise to corresponding lugs 4a that project radially from the rib 4 on the upstanding flange 2 of the main supporting bracket. The customary limit switches (not shown) are employed for automatically stopping the motor when the door reaches the limit of its opening and closing movements; and the usual push-button station 7.5
(not shown) is provided for starting, stopping and reversing said motor.
The armature shaft 'l of the motor 5 extends through the opening 3 in the upstanding flange 2 of the main supporting bracket of the unit and has the hub of a spur pinion 8 keyed thereon, which meshes with a gear 9 on the sheave E. The pinion 8 is prevented from sliding longitudinally of the armatureshaft 7 by means of a set-screw 10. At its outer end, the hub portion of said pinion is provided with a journal 11 which is supported in suitable antifriction bearings 12 mounted in a pocket provided therefor in a lubricant containing housing 13 that encloses the pinion 8 and the gear 9. The gear housing is pro- V90 vided with laterally extending flanges 14 that are bolted or otherwise removably secured to the vertical flange 2 of the main supporting bracket and serve to space the housing away from said r bracket. The driving sheave E is keyed to a shaft o y 15 disposed parallel to the armature shaft 7 of the motor 5 with its opposite ends journaled in suitable antifriction bearings 16 mounted lin pockets provided therefor in the gear housing 13 and in the upstanding ilange 2 of the main supporting bracket. If a positive drive is desired between the driving sheave E and the sprocket chain C, the inner faces of the iianges of said sheave may be provided with oppositely disposed circumferentially spaced lugs 17 adapted to interlock With the links of said sprocket chain.
For purposes of assembly, the bracket opposing side of the gear housing 13 is provided with a cover plate 18 that is removably secured to said housing preferably by means of screws 19. A
circular opening is formed in the cover plate 18 to accommodate the driving sheave E, which opening is provided with an edge frange 20 which seats Within a circular groove provided therefor in a feit packing ring 21 mounted in a circular groove provided therefor in the adjacent face of the gear 9 formed on the nange of said sheave. By this arrangement lubricant is prevented from escaping through the sheave receiving opening in the cover plate without preventing rotation of said sheave. The cover plate 18 is also provided with a circular opening 22 through which the pinion 8 is passed, and a circular flange 23 within which is seated a felt packing ring 24 which is mounted in an annular groove provided therefor in the hub of said pinion. The packing ring 2li has a snug t in the flange 2S of the cover plate and in the groove in the hub of the pinion and thus prevents the escape of lubricant through the pinion receiving opening in the cover plate of the gear housing. i
The hereinbefore described door operating unit has the great advantage that it is so small, cornpact and light that it can be quickly and easily attached at almost any place desired in the door construction. It is made up of a minimum nurnber of parts, it provides antifriction bearings for the armature shaft and the sheave shaft and it provides proper lubrication for the gearing and the bearings for supporting said shafts4 Obviously, the construction hereinbefore described admits of considerable variation without departing from the invention.
What I claim is:
1. An operating unit comprising a main supporting bracket, an electric motor supported on said bracket, a pinion fixed to the armature shaft of said motor, a sheave rotatably supported on said bracket, a gear rotatable with and located outwardly of said sheave and interrneshing wi a said pinion, a housing removably secured to said bracket and enclosing said pinion and said gear, said bracket and said housing being spaced apart opposite said sheave to provideaspaceforthelatter, the bracket opposing side of said housing being provided with a removable cover plate having openings therein adapted to receive said pinion and said gear, respectively, and means for pre Venting the escape of lubricant from said housing through the joints between said pinion and said sheave and the openings therefor in said cover plate.
2. An operating unit comprising a main supporting bracket, an electric motor secured to one side of saidbracket with its armature shaft extending through an opening provided therefor in said bracket, a pinion secured to said armature shafton the opposite side of said bracket, a hou"- ing secured to said bracket and spaced away from the last mentioned side thereof, said housing enclosing said pinion and being provided with a bearing for supporting the outer end of said arinature shaft, a shaft disposed parallel to said armature shaft with one end journaled in said bracket and with the other end ,iournaled in said vof lubricant through said openings.

4. An operating unit comprising a main supporting bracket, an electric motor secured to one side of bracket with its armature shaft extending through an opening provided therefor in said bracket, a pinion secured to said armature shaft cn the opposite sideof said bracket, a housing enclosing said pinion and secured to said brack:J and spaced away from said last mentioned side thereof, said housing being provided with a bearing for supporting said armature shaft, a shaft disposed parallel to said armature shaft with one end journaled in said bracket and with the other journaled in said housing, a sheave hired to said shaft with the groove of said sheave locate-i in the space between said bracket and said hc a gear located in said housing and rotatable with said sheave and intermeshing with the pinion in said housing, a cover plate removably secured to the bracket opposing side of said housing, said cover plate being provided with openings adapted to accommodate said pin* ion and said gear, said cover plate being providedv with flanges surrounding said openings, and packing rings mounted on said pinion and said respectively, and cooperating with the flanges surrounding the pinion and gear receiving openings in said .cover plate.
