' part of this specification, in which UNITED STATES PATENT GEEICE.
EDWIN L. MARSHALL, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOOK-SUPPORTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l92,l77,'dated June 19, 1877 application iiled May 4, 1877.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, Enwnv L. MARSHALL', of Cleveland, in thel county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in vBook-Supporters, of which the foilowin g is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a Figure l is a view of the book-supporter as applied topractical use. Fig. 2 is a detached vertical transverse section.
Like letters of reference refer to like partsl The construction ofthe book-supporter andY the practical application of the same for the purpose specified are substantially as follows As shown in the drawings, Ais a standard, supported upright by a foot, B. To the standard is litted, so that it will slide thereon, a bracket or screw-clamp, G, which may be secured at any position on the standard by a set-screw, D; also, to the standard, above the clamp, is fitted loosely an arm, E, by a collar,
F. To the outer end of said arm is secured a sleeve, G, a detached transverse section of which is shown in Fig. 2. In the sleeve is loosely litteda stem, H, the lower end of which terminates ina head or button, I, pro` vided with a rubber cushion or face, J, forming the face of the button.
To prevent the stem and button dropping from the sleeve, a nut, K, is screwed on the upper projecting end of the stem. A section of the stem within `the sleeve is smaller than the part below, to which the head is secured." Around said "smaller part of the stein is a spring, G', by which the stem is held forcibly extended from the sleeve and prevented from being pushed easily therein. The arrangement of the stein and spring within the sleeve is shown in Fig. 2.-
The practical application of the above-described device is shown in Fig. 1, in which L represents a book, and M one of the covers, turned back and supported in a horizontal position by the supporter, which is so adjusted as to allow the edge of the cover to rest upon the ledge N of the clamp, down upon which it is clamped by the screw O. The leaves l?, turned back upon the cover M, are secured thereto and prevented from springing back or closing by the arm E, which, for that purpose, is swung around over theleaves, and so adjusted as to allow the button to press thereon. The pressure for this purpose is exerted by the spring G', which will force the button more or less firmly upon the leaves, as the adjustment of the arm on the standard may be as regards its height thereon.
The soft-rubber pad prevents abrasion of the leaves,'and also prevents them from slipping from under the button, should the pressure be light.
To adjust a new leaf under the button, the
arm, for that purpose, is raised'on the standard or swungaround from over the book. The leaf is then turned over, down upon which the button is `brought by lowering the arm.
The action of the spring in the sleeve will' tend to force upward the end of the armand thereby canse the collar F to bind on the standard, and prevent the arm from being forced upward so long as the button remains pressed upon the book.
To support the book in an inclined position, the supporter is placed at the top of the book, and the edge of the back thereof placed on the ledge N ot' the clamp, fwhich'is lirml y retained there by the screw 0, and at any desired height by adjusting the clamp on the standard.
lVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with the standard A,
arm F1, and sleeve G, the stem II, nut K, and spring G', in the manner substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination with the standard A and screw-clam p C, the sliding horizontally-movable arm E, substantially in the manner as herein described, and for the purpose specified.
