UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEBBEUS H. ROGERS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT m LETTER-SHEETS AND ENVELOPES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 192,131, dated June 19, 1877; application filed January 23, 1877.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LEBBEUS H. RocERs, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Combined Postal Cards or Letter-Sheets and Envelopes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a postal card or letter-sheet, provided with terminal foldcontaining the sealing-flap and with perforations which form a line of demarkation between the fold and the body of the sheet, and allow of the ready detachment or separation of the fold from the sheet, in order to open the folded and sealed letter; and consists in the application, to such card or sheet, of mncilage on the hack thereof, in such position as will coincide with the terminal flap when the sheet or card is folded.
It has been found that the mncilage on the face of the self-sealing sheets or cards is unslghtly, and a source of inconvenience, as when exposed to damp or handled by persons having moist fingers they become sticky or otherwise disagreeable.
By my invention I have remedied this defeet, and the manner in which thesame is or may be carried into efiect'is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of a letter-sheet made in accordance with my said invention. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same seen in the rear. Fig. 3 shows in perspective view the sheet half folded. Fig. 4 represents an end view'of the sheet folded.
The card or sheet A, which is a plain rectangular sheet of paper or card-board, is provided at the top with a liap,'B, which is divided from the body of the sheet that receives the writing by a line of perforations, a, extending from one side to the other of the sheet.
The sheet, in thisinstance, is intended to be folded twice alongthe lines marked b in the drawings, dividing the part of the sheet between the line-perforations a and the bottom into three parts, nearly equal or slightly increasing in depth from the bottom to the line a, so as to admit of a perfect three-ply folding; the middle portion has a strip of from mucilage, and the mucilaged portion 211- ways protected.
It is obvious the writer may use for writing the whole sheet, with the exception of the sealing-flap. After folding it, he or she may wet either the flap or the mucilage portion of the back of the sheet to seal it. The address may then be written on either side of the folded sheet, and will thus become a permanent part of the letter.
Having now described my invention, and the manner in which the same is or may be carried into efi'ect, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A sheet of paper or card-board, formed with a sealing-flap. a line of perforations between the flap and the body of the sheet, and mucilage on the back of the sheet. placed in such position that the flap will fold onto it, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name this 29th day of December, A. l).
