Description

1933- w. ROCKSTROH DRIVING GEAR FOR PRINTING PRESSES.
Filed May 5, 1952 /n vento Patented Aug. 1, 1933 Walter Rockstroh, Dresden, Germany Application May 3,1932, Serial No. 608,961, mm
' in Ge'rmanySeptember 28, 1931 11 Claims. (01.101-250) This invention relates to improvements in driving gear for printing presses and has particular but not exclusive reference to flat bed machines.
Prior to the present invention it hasbeen customary to mount the elements of the gear for driving fiat bed printing presses individually in thesupporting frame of the press, so that a separatemounting within the supporting frame was necessary for each of the shafts of the drive. Printing machines have also been constructed in which a part of the drive is mounted outside the wall of the machine. In neither of these types of machine, however, can the driving mechanism as a whole be detached from the machine, since each of the, shafts is mounted separately in the supporting frame and must therefore be detached separately from the machine. 1
The present invention has amongst its objects to obviate this disadvantage and with this and other ends in view all the parts of the driving gear serving to impart motion to the component parts of a printing machine are encased in a separate gear box.
7 The gear box is preferably detachably mounted and may be situated within or without the supporting frame of the press.
In a device according to the present invention the gearbox controls the movements of all 30 the movable parts of the press, whether the rotary motion for driving the continuously rotating impression cylinder or that for driving the one-revolution control shaft which produces the timed movements. Each of the shafts which '35 serve to impart motion to a part of the press is detachably connected to the corresponding driven member, for example, by a simple coupling or by toothed wheels. The driving gear can be of any convenient type, there being many known 40 constructions which can be inserted in a subthe invention,
, Figure 2 is a sectional plan view of the con struction shown in Figure 1.
The supporting frameof the printing press illustrated is constructed in twoparts, a lower part 1 and an upper part 2, the sub-frame 3 being bolted or'otherwise detachably mounted on the lower part 1. The upper part 2 which is suitably mounted on the lower part 1 carries the tracksfor the printing carriage 4. In the construction shown, the shafts 5 on which the wheels 6 are mounted are employed for imparting motion to the carriage 4. The shaft 7 makes a uniform rotary movement ,and is therefore used for driving the impression cylinder 8. The, shaft 9 rotates rapidly and may be employed for driving, for instance, the rapidly rotating feed drums 11 of the feed apparatus which delivers the paper or other material to be printed to the press. The driving motor 10 is so mounted on the gear box 3, that it does not require any special support in the frame of thepress.
A driving gear such as described has many advantages over the constructions heretofore proposed; for example, the individual mounting of numerous shafts in the frame is obviated; The gear boxes may be manufactured by mass production and they may be so constructed that one gear box can be used for several sizes of machines, and furthermore they may be inserted complete in the machine. The driving gear may also be located in a place within the machine where it neither weakens the frame nor makes the machine longer, as for example the known driving device of stop cylinder machines. The gear requires little attention because it can run in oil and can be detached from the machine without difl'iculty.
