CONTAINER Filed Dec. 9, 1931 1 W1 u mag /1 16? Patented July 25, 1933 h a 1,919,912. UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE, A
. G-AYLORD CLINTON SNELL, or TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA, ASSIGNOR TO APPLEFORD PAPER PRODUCTS LIMITED,OF HAMILTON, CANADA CONTAINER Application filed December 9, 1931 Serial No. 579,897,'and in Canada April 10, 1931.
This invention relates to containers, and more particularly to cardboard containers for wax paper.
The object of this invention is to provide a secure anchorage for theside of a onepiece knock-down box'or container whereby the side is "better adapted to support a hinged cover or lid such as is, for instance, used as a combined closing means and cutting means for wax paper. A further object is to construct such a box or contalner Which is simple in construction and may be easily assembled without the use of tabs or slots.
My'objectis attained by making the con: tainer in a known manner with a bottom,
. sides and ends, preferably all integral, and
by providing said sides which constitute interlocking anchoring means. More particularly my object is attained by providing an extension flap on the end flap of the side to which thecover is hinged, which end flap passes under a foldedin flap on the upper edge of the end of thebox, and the extension flap extends beyond the folded in flap and is bent ata'n angle thereto, whereby the end flap of the side is anchored beneath said folded in flap fee and prevents the side frompulling out, and
the other sideisprovided with a flap connected to its longitudinal edge which folds [lid .open, andone end of.
process of assembly. 1
panying drawing in which downinto th'ebox over theextension flap,
The l11V8I1t10I11S hereinafter more speclfi-r Cally described and illustrated in Fig. 1 is a longitudinal cross section of the closed box,- partly broken away, looking towards the front of the box; 1
Fig. 2 is a cross section on the line 25-2 in Fig. 1f, 1 f.
Fig. 3 the blank from which the box is made; and N p i g I Fig. 4 a plan view of the box, showing the the boxv in the In the drawing like numerals of reference indicate. corresponding parts in" the different figures. P
The container or box comprises a bottom 1, tothe longitudinal sides of which are in tegrally connected a front side 2" and arear side 3, and to the ends or transverse sides of whichare connected ends 4, 4.
[To the ends of the front side 2 are connected flaps 5, 5, and to the ends of the and ends with flaps the accom Y extension 91s the rear side 3.
rear side 3 are connected flaps 6, 6. In asand are adaptedto be folded overthe flaps 5, 5 and 6, 6 and down into the interior of the box as assembled. Flanges 8, 8 on the flaps 7, 7 contact withthe bottom 1 of the box and tend to hold the flaps 7, 7 in their folded-in position. Flap extensions 9, 9 on the flaps 6, 6 extend beyond flaps 7, 7 and are bent at an angle thereto so that the flaps 6, 6 are thus anchored beneath the flaps 7, 7 and thus prevent the side 3 from being pulled out. To strengthen the side2 and to provide allocking device for the flaps 7, 7 a flap is connected to the outer or upper longitudinal edge ofthe front side *2 and is folded into the interior of the box.
which rests on the flanges 8, 8 ofthe flaps- 7,7 and holds themin their'folded-over position. When thefiap 10 is in its folded-in position the flap extensions 9, 9 extend be-- tweenthe side flap 10 and the front side 2 and are thus concealed and held firmly in positio'nat right angles to the flaps 6, 6.
It will be seen from the above description that the total length of the flap 5 and the greater than the width ofthe that the length of the flap 6 bottom 1 and p is equal'to the width of the bottoml which brings. the'line of fold between'the 'flap 6 and the extension 9 atthe corner of the box when it is assembled. I The construction just describedprovides a container which is firmly constructed without the-necessity ofany slots orinterlocking tabs, and provides a rear wall 3 which is very firmly supported and held in position, so. that-it will not pull out under pressure of a hinging lid or cover. This cover comprises a top 12 which is hingedly connected to the outer orupper longitudinal edge of Along the longitudinal edge of the cover top 12 is a front 13, which is adapted to provide a cutting edge when the container is usedrfor wax paper rolls. At the ends of the cover top 12 are ends 14, 14. At the ends of the front 13 are flaps 15, 15,
which are in-turned across the ends of the cover top and substantially parallel to the ends 14:, 14. Connected to the longitudinal edge of the ends 1 1, 14 are flaps 16, 16, which are folded over the flaps 15, 15. The flaps 16, 16 are provided with flanges 17, 17, which are adapted to engage the cover top 12 and which slip under and are anchored by tabs 18, 18 formed by a slot in the cover top 12.
The constructions described comprises a one-piece integral box which is simple to construct and assemble and which, when assembled, does not tend to become loosened or pulled apart through constant use such as it would be subjected to if used as a container for rolls of wax paper.
WVhat I claim as my invention is:
