This invention relates to improvements in door locks of the latch bolt type used on outside doors, and of that general character in which the external door knob is noi-- nially disconnected 'from'the' interior knob the spindle and the inner knob and this was j found to v be an objectionable feature. for;v
various reasons. The structure of the present invention therefore particularly represents improvementsover this previous one;
`my principal object being to retainV all the advantageousffeatures of the previous form of lock by providing a .releasable interlock ing meansbetween the router knobl and the spindle arranged to be actuatedat will without any axial movement of the spindle or` either knob being necessary. Y

At its outer end the spindle has swivel jointed connection with an extension 2O formed at its outer end with an enlarged flange 2l. The extension has a transverse notch 22 in its outer end adapted to be engaged by the tip of the proper key inserted in the barrel 23 of a lockot standard charaeter which is mounted in the outer knob. .This arrangement enables the spindle to be turned and the ldoor to be opened whether the outer knob is free to turn at the time or not. A cup 24 seated in the outer end of the sleeve 8 against inwardmovement engages the fiange 21 to prevent inward movement of the spindle; outward movement being prevented by the engagement of the notched end ofthe liange with the adjacent end of the lock barrel. Y
Slidable on the spindle and its extension and in the sleeve 8 is an inner sleeve 25, normally urged outwardly or against the cup 24 by a spring 26. The bore of the sleeve 25 at its inner endis of reduced sizeand is square as at 27 to-.slidably and non-turnably engage the spindle; said spindle in the plane of the normal position of the square portion 27 being rounded as at .23 or otherwise reduced in size so that it can turn in said portion 27. The contacting surfaces of the sleeves 25 and 8 where they slidably engage each other are of hexagonal or other noncircular form as at 29 so that'they must turn together.
The inner end of the sleeve 25 is normally disposed inwardly ofthe plate l1 and the exposed portion of the sleeve is provided with longitudinal opposed slotsv 30. Ilfhese slots are engaged by lugs 31 projecting from the bore of a ring 32, the lugs bearing against the back end of the slots. The ring is notched on its sides as at 33 to slidably but non-turnably engage lugs 34 struck up from and extending axially of the plate 1l.
From the above description it will be seen that the spindle Vis normally turnable in the outerr knob so that it cannot be turned by the rotation of said knob. The arm 37 is rigid with an actuator sleeve V39 which surrounds the spindle in clearance relation thereto and which projects through 'the plate 2 and into a collar 40 which turnably engages the outer end of the knob sleeve 17. This collar is turnably mounted in the plate 2 and has an enlarged flange 4l on its end which cooperates with a shoulder 42 on said plate. The flange is turnably clamped between the shoulder and a spring washer43 set in the plate 2 so to prevent axial movement of the'collar in Veither direction without interfering with its rotation. v Y
Pressed into the collar and practically` forming a part thereof vis a plate 44 turnably engaging the sleeve 3 9 vand holding the same centered on the spindle; said plate having opposed lugs 45 projecting from about the bore. rlhese lugs engage opposite helical grooves 46 cut in the sleeve 39 so that as the collar 40 is turned said sleeve will be moved lengthwise, imparting'a corresponding` movement tothe sleeve 25'through' the various connecting elements. j
The pitch and length of the 'helical grooves is such that with about half a turn of the collar the sleeve 25 will be moved to bring` the square bore portion 27 over the square portion ofthe spindle and at the same time move the member 32 clear of the lugs 34,so that the plate and sleeve 25 are tree to turn. l

4When the sleeve 39 is drawn toward the plate toa'vspindle coupling positionby the rotation ofthe collar 40 it will remain in that position until thecollar is intention-ally retracted.l Upon such retraction being affected the pullof the spring-.2G causes the ringl 32 to re-assume its engaged position with the lugs34 as soon 4as either knoband spindle are turned sothat the notches Y33 register with said lugs. Thisregistration will take'place before any knob turning movement can be had after the collar has been once turned to its retracted position.
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that I have produced such a device as substantially fulfills the objects of O the invention as set forth herein.
While this speciication sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of the device, still in practice suoli deviations from such detail may be resorted to "5f y as -do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention, as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described my Yinvention what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: i
l. In a lock of the latch bolt type, a bolt non-turning engagement with the spindleV only when said inner sleeve is moved from a predetermined position, a fixed plate about the inner sleeve, a member fixed on the inner sleeve, lugs projecting from the plate in the i direction of sliding movement of the inner sleeve and non-turnably guiding said member, said lugs being shorter than the length of movement of the yinner sleeve necessary to place the same in non-turning engagement with the spindle, and means actuable at will for thus moving said inner sleeve.
2. In a lock of the latch bolt type, a bolt actuating spindle, a knob-secured to oneend of the'spindle, another knob in .which the other end of the spindle is normally turnable, means for releasably locking said other knob to the spindle 'including a member movable axially of the spindle, a rotary control member mounted in connection with the one knob axially thereof, a sleeve aboutthe spindle projecting into said rotary member, means supporting the sleeve concentric with with the rotation of said rotarymember the i i sleevewill be'moved axially, and connecting l means between said sleeve andthe spindle locking member.

In a lock of the latch bolt type, a bolt housing, a boltY actuating spindle projecting transverselv through the'housing, rknobs on f the ends of the spindle, the spindle bein normally turnable in one knob, means for releasably locking said one knob to the spindle including a longitudinally movable sleeve on the spindle adjacent. said one knob, a longitudinally movable actuating sleeve on the spindle adjacent theother knob,r radial and parallel arms projecting `from said sleeves lengthwise of the housing past the Y backend thereof, and a rigid connection between the outer ends of the arms.

A structure as in claim 2 in which said connecting means comprises an arm rigid with and extending radially from the sleeve, anarm projecting radially from and turnable relative to said axially movable member of thel structure for movement axially therewith, and a rigid connect-,ionl between the outer ends of said arms. j
6. A structure as in claim 4 with means to alter the operative length of said connec- -tion from the exterior of the lock structure. V7. A structurel as in claim 2 in which said sleevesupporting means comprises a plate 'adapted to be secured against the face of aV door, said plate having an orifice through which the sleeve slidablv projects, and lugs projecting inwardly from said orifice, said sleeve having longitudinal slots with which the lugs engage.

In al lock of the latch bolt type, a bolt housing, an actuating spindle projecting transversely through the housing, knobs on the ends of the spindle, said spindle being normally turnable in one knob, means for releasably locking said one knob to the spindle including an element on one side of the housing adjacent said one knob and movable to a predetermined position to effect such locking, an actuating member for the Y element on the opposite side of the housing andadjacent said other knob, and connecting means between said member 'and element extending across the housing eXteriorly thereof.
