Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE VGEORGE JOHNSTON, OE DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN EYEGLASSES.4
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 191,972, dated .lune 12, 1877 `application tiled January 15, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE J oENsToN, of
Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented an Improvement in Eyeglass Frames and Springs, of which the following is a specification: The nature of my invention relates to an improvement in thespring by means of which the two parts of the frame of eye or nose glasses are secured together, and, in combination therewith, a supplementary pair of springs.
The object of the invention is, primarily, to form a stronger connecting-spring without increasing the weight, and at the same time to increase the elasticity; and, secondarily, in combination with said spring, to provide a very light elastic pair ot' whalebone springs, to tit the sides of the nose and hold the glass .in place with certainty, and without compressing the nerves, by distributing the pressure.
[n the drawings, A A represent a pair of bows of the usual form and construction, to the former of which is secured thelhandle B. A spring, C, of thet'orm shown in the drawing, has its ends secured to the bows by means 0f suitable screws or rivets passing through the studs a and the ends of the springs; thence curving upward, the spring assumes on each side a semi-elliptic form, and is again secured to each bow by means of suitable screws passing through the springs into the studs b. At the upper end of the semi-ellipse 4 the spring on each side curves outwardly, and
terminates in the bow-connection, as shown.
A supplementary spring, D, made of whalebone, with its inner face corrugated or roughened, is secured to each of the studs a,- thence passing upward in a convex form', its upper end is secured by a proper rivet at c to the spring C.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, with the bows A A of a pair of eyeglasses, of the spring C, of the form shown, secured to each of the said bows at two points, by means ot' the studs a b, constructed and arranged substantially as described.
2. In a pair of eye or nose glasses, the combination and arrangement of the frames A A', handle B, and springs C D, when constructed and secured together substantially .as herein specified.
