Description
' July 25, 1933. E. ca. REINHARDT METAL DOOR JAMB Filed Feb; 18, 1931 INVENTOR ATTORN EYi Patented July 25, 1933 UNITED STATESQY-PATEN'II; OFFICE EDWIN G. BEINEARDT, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO METAL DOOR JAMB Application med February 18, 1931. Serial in. 516,626.
' tight seal when the door is closed and also serves as a stop or buffer for the door.
Another object of the invention is to form a jamb of a metallic strip with an elastic bead extending at an angle from one longitudinal edge of the strip removably clipped thereto, to provide a rabbet to receive a door or the like and furnish a water tight closure.
Other objects and certain advantages will be more fully apparent from a description of the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a view in 'outer elevation of a door}; fitted within the, improved frame or Jam g Figure 2 is an enlarged section on line 2-2, Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an enlarged section on line 33, Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing, 1 indicates a door which may be of any type of construction and, as illustrated, provides a closure for shower bath stall. The door constitutes a hollow metallic frame 2 having a glass panel 3 mounted therein. The panel is suitably fitted within the frame by a rubber packing strip 4 of channel form, marginally binding the edges of the glass panel and securely mounted within the door frame by molding strips 5. The lower end of the door is provided with a drip 6 fixed to the lower cross rail of the door frame. The drip consists of a metallic strip having a horizontal flange 7 which overlaps theupper edge of the lower cross rail of the door frame and abuts the panel to bind the lower edge of the panel within the frame. It is further provided with an inclined body portion having on its under side a depending flange lapping against the side face of the lower cross rail of the door frame. The lower edge of the flange is grooved to receive a rubber sealing strip 8 having a rib or flange engaged within the groove of the flange of the drip 6. The free edge of the strip 8 contacts with the sill of the door opening when the door is closed.
The door is hinged to the jamb or frame by a piano-type of hinge 9, in which the hinge leaves extend approximately the full length of the door. The jamb or door-frame is formed of metallic strips'lO longitlidifi-al.ly= channelled on one or the rear side to receive a packing strip 11 preferably ofa felt material which is compressed within the channel when the jamb strip is secured to the door opening. The jamb strip longitudinally,"at one edge is provided with an ofi'set portion 12 forming a rabbet shoulder 13 and the rib or head 14 extending laterally from the face side of the offset portion and longitudinally therewith, forming a tenon or dove-tail for 7 binding or interlockingly applying a rubber or resilient strip 15 thereon preferably of the width of the offset to bring the same flush with the surface of the shoulder 13, and com bining therewith to make the rabbet for the jamb. The forward end of the 'sealing strip is provided with an outwardly extending lip 16 which is adapted to compressively engage the door frame when the door is closed.
The interlocking joint for removably securing the resilient sealing or buffer strip may be of various designs or configurations and represented as a metallic core or reinforcement for the sealing strip to give the same the necessary stability as a stop for the door as well as provide means for removably secur- 86 ing the sealing strip to the base or jamb strip 10 the concept primarily being to form a jamb or frame with the metallic strip base and the resilient bead at an angle to the base to provide a rabbet.
'Having described my invention, I claim:
1. A metallic jamb for doors and the like, comprising, a strip having a longitudinal marginal ofi'set portion on its face side, a rib extending at right angles centrally of said 95 offset portion having a beaded head, and an elastic strip longitudinally channelled and corresponding to the contour of the rib for engagement thereon, securely mounting the elasticstrip to the metallic strip and abut- 10G longitudinally channelled, the channel (orresponding to the contour of the rib for enveloping the rib and securely mounting the rubber strip to the metallic strip, the rubber strip forming a yielding rabhet for the jamb, and a lip extending from the front edge of the rubber strip for compressibly contacting with a closure engaged t-hereagainst.
EDWIN G. REINI'IARDT.
