this purpose there has hitherto been used 1 an armature or reenforcement consisting of vertical wooden laths which are pressed against the lead mantle by means of horizontal iron bands.
Such reenforcing has the drawback that the wooden laths interfere with the cooling by the outer air of the surface of the leaden mantle, and it has also the drawback that acid which may have found its way between the tile wall and the leaden mantle, owing to the spaces between the wooden laths, may
spread between the wall and the mantle on the inner surface of the same, which may cause a corrosion of the lead and even a fracture of the leaden'mantle ifthe liquid pressure becomes sufficiently great. As such reaction towers are rather high and the acid has a considerable specific gravity the hydrostatic pressure can, if a vertical channel of acid be formed between the tile wall and the leaden 39 mantle reach a value at the footof the leaden mantle which the leaden mantle cannot sustain so that it breaks or leaks.
Therefore, the present invention contemplates pressing the leaden mantle tightly against the tile wall at as many places as possibleand along horizontal lines in order to prevent the formation of such vertical channels. The invention more particularly .provides a reenforcement of the leaden mantle by means of vertically arranged metal cables or belts of metal wire-gauze or netting, whereby the above named disadvantages are obviated.
In the drawing Figure 1 shows diagraim matically part of a leaden mantle with a reenforcement according to the invention.
Figure 2 is a detail on a larger scale and Figure 3 is a modification.
As it will appear from used a belt of metal wires 1, which by vertical of the bands being provided with a turn- Figure 1 there is wires 2 are connected so as to form 'awire gauze. A number of such belts are used at suitable mutual intervals. The wires preferably have a diameter of about 5 mm. and the distance between the vertical wires preferably is about 60400 mm. The securing and tightening of the belt is effected by means of angle-irons 6 and bolts 7 as appears in Figure 1.
s In the modification shown in Figure 3 a number of independent cables or wires 8 are laid around the reaction tower at suitable distances, and each individual cable is tight ened by means of an ordinary'rigging screw 9 with rightand left-handed threads.
By the reenforcement of reaction towers by such cables or belts of wire-gauze the leaden mantle is pressed against the tile wall without the use of heat-insulating substances, and as the lines along which the contact takes place are horizontal and at a small mutual distance no gap can exist between the tile wall and the leaden mantle to occasion-fracture of the leaden mantle.
Having fully described our invention we claim as new and desire tosecure by Letters Patent:
'1. Reenforcing means for reaction towers for manufacturing sulphuric acid of the type 7 having an inner tile wall and. an outer leaden 9 mantle in contact therewith, comprising a plurality of closely spaced metal bands, each buckle adapted to be tightened to press each of the bands individually against the leaden mantle to thereby press the latter against the said tile wall alonghorizontal lines.
- 2. Reenforcing means for reaction towers of the type having an inner tile wall and an outer leaden mantle in contact therewith,
comprising a unitary belt of wire netting and means for tightening the said belt into contact with the leaden mantle to thereby press the later into intimate contact with the said inner tile wall. v V
