These abutment surfaces are so formed that they limit the movement of the slide and consequently the movement of the operating member to a particular predetermined amount.` For any given abutment surface, therefore, the dial operating member can only be rotated to such an extent as to dial a particular item. Cooperating with the dial operating member there is a pawl which engages ratchet teeth formed ontheedge of the ltranslating element opposite to the edge having the abutment surfaces and vthis pawl' serves'toshift the translating element, transversely of the operating member and the slide eachtimc the operating member is actuated. In this way, successive abutment surfaces of the translating element are brought into the path of the abutment on the slide and continued actuation of thev dial operating member is selectively limited so that a telephone call number is progressively dialed.

In the drawing, the dialing device is illustrated as it is applied to atelephonefstand lv rhavin'ga manually actuated dial 2. For this purpose, there is providedwhat ,may be convenientlytermed anv adapter. This adapter consists of a cylindrical frame `3 having an inwardly extending flange 4 at one end and an outwardly flaring flange 5 at the opposite L' end. The outwardly flaring flange is'shapcd to exactly lit the contour of lthe telephone aboutl the dial, or the base of the dial where the dial is located on a switchboard. Along the side of this base member, there is formed an internal, longitudinal groove 6 which is pr vided to receive the stop 7 associated with the telephone dial. By means of this groove, and'the stop-for the telephone dial, the adapter can only be placed over the dial in one position and when so placed is prevented from moving about the dial. To the inward- -ly extending flange 4 of the adapter is secured the casing or frame of the dial operating device.v

The radial arm secured to the end of the shaft is volf-set so that the outer end thereof' lies in close proximity to the plane of the dial adjacent that portion of the dial having the linger openings therethrough. On this outer end of the radial arm there is secured a roller 15 which extends into the last -opening in the dial. On the shaft, yadjacent the end that extends through the base of the casing, there is formed ay cam 16- having a spiral cam surface. This cam fits within the circular recess 1'1 in they bottom of the casing. Radially ofthe circular recess in the bottom member, there is formed 1n therect-angu- `larfsection of the bottomv of the casing a groove 17 the sides of wl'iich form ai guide for a slide 18. rlhe slide has a slot 19 therethrough tlirough which the shaft passesand the slide is reciprocally mounted to move perpendicularto the shaft. On one -end of this slide,` there secured a depending projection 20 of rectangular configuration that fits into the aforementioned groove 17. AW hen the rst tooth in the translating elementengages the pavvl on the operatingmember the translating element is positioned with thefrst slot or abutment surface l5 thereof in the path of the abutment on the slide. As the operating member is rotated to actuate the dial, the pavvl 32 thereof Will be Withdrawn, by virtue of the inclined face on the first tooth of the translating element and the edge of the slot 37, into the circular opening in the intermediate section of the casing. The cam i6 acting upon the cam follower 22 secured to the slide i8 will cause the slide to move perpendicular to the operating memlberuntil the abutmenty Q9 on the slide engages-the base'or abutment surface of the first 'slot in the translating element. lt Will be noted that the translating element is so positioned that the slide becomes wedged bet-Ween; the cam and the abutment surface of the-translating element so that further movement of the operating member is completelyrestrained. The dial operating mem- `beristhen released and on the return movement the pavvl extends through the slot and engages the rear edge of the first tooth on the translating device and shifts the translating` device transversely of the operating' mem- 'bcr anv amount equivalent to one abutment abutment surface 45a on the translating element engages the abutment and this is such that movement of the operating member is totally restrained and further actuation of the dial isprevented.
lt Will of course be obvious that there need be one abutment surface for each item in the telephone call number plus a stop surface for'preventing further actuation of the telephone dial when the number has been dialed. ltvvill also be obvious that the depth of a slot cut to form an abutment surface in the translating element will determine the item to which a dial is actuated when th at particular abutment surface is in the path of the abutment on the slide. Therelation of the abutment surfaces to the items of telephone call number or the characters printed cna vdial is illustrated in Figure 6.
