A The invention relates to devices suitable for branding and marking with ink and more particularly it relates to inking devices providing means for drying the ink as it is applied. l d
An object of the invention is to provide an improved combination branding and inking device of the kind described.
Another obj ect of the invention is the provision of an improved inking device provid-' ing raised characters and means to heat and dry ink applied to such characters in combination with an'improved ink pad mounted in cooperative relation with said device.
A further object is the provision of a novel inking device in combination with a pad movable into and out of cooperative relation with the device. I p
A still, further object of the invention is the provision of a device of the kind described'providing improved means for applying inktoraised characters and to heat such characters to dry the ink as it -penetrates the surface to be marked in such manner as to be permanently retained on such surface. p I 7 v A further object of the invention isthe provision of novel means for mounting a pad on a device of the kind described whereby the type or raised characters to beheated are uniformly inked in-arelatively short time and thereby enablesthe ink of all the characterstobe uniformly heated and applied to the surface to be branded under uniform conditions tending. to prevent smearing of such surfaces. v I
A still further object of the present invention is to improve devices of the character disclosed in sundry details hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims. p I b Many other objects and advantages of the construction herein shown and described will be obvious to those skilledin the art from the disclosure herein given. Fig. 3 is a sectional view along the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Referring now more particularly to the drawing, the numerals 10, 11 and 12 respecber 15 has a tubular lining of cement 1 7 in which a resistance coil-1 8 is embedded.
The tubular member 15projects' a substantial distance from the cylindrical member 13 and is connected with the ofi'set end of the handle 11 by a spiral member 24 which gives rigidity to the device and provides a conmotion between the heating element 10 and the handle 11 enabling the parts to be easily assembled. The connecting member 12 also includes a plurality ofaxially aligned porcelain members-numbered 20,21 and 22 respectively. The member 20 is mounted in the portion ofthe tubular member l5. The mem tubular member 15 and is provided with an ofi'set portion permittingit to extend the full length of and closely lit the cement linings 1-7 The member 20hasa pair oflongitudinally extending apertures 38 and 39 which are in alignment with corresponding a ertures, not. shown, in the members 21 an 22. The adjacent ends of the members 20, 2i and l 22 cooperate in anysuitable manner. In the device shown this is accomplished byproviding telescoping offset end portions for the adj acent ends ofthe members. The spiral member'24 is rigid and effectively holds the'membersin the positionsshown. A conductor extends through an axial aperture 40 in the handle 11 and continues through the apertures 38 and 39in the porcelain members 20, 21 and 22, where they terminate in a resistance coil 18 which is insulated from the tubular member 15. by the cement lining 17.

The cylindrical member 13 is quickly heated by energizing the coil 18. A stem 25, shown as integrally formed and in axial alignment with the cylindrical member 13, provides a mounting for a rotatable disc 26. The disc 26 is provided with one or more type 27, adapted when heated to provide characters on a surface to be branded. The disc 26 is so positioned relative to the cylindrical member 13 that it is heated by the latter when the'resistance coil'17 is energized. v The stem also provides a mounting for a circularrotatable ink pad 34. For this purpose an arm 28 is mounted on the end of the stem25 and held in position by a screw bolt 31, a metal washer 2'9 and a gasket 30 of heat insulating material.
The. outer end of the arm 28 is bifurcated to provide a mounting for an arm 32. The arm 32 is pivotally mounted on a bolt 33 extend ing through the bifurcated portion of the arm 28. A shaft 35.proj ects from the-outer end of the arm 32 to provide a mounting for the cylindrical ink pad 34. In the full line posi tion of the pad 34 as shown in Fig. 2, the type or characters 27 on the disc 26 are in contact with the surface of the pad 34. Rotation ofeither the disc 26 or of the pad 3 L causes the rotation of both with the type contacting with the pad and results in the type being uniformly coated with sufficient ink for application to a surface to be marked.
"The. pad 3t is held in its full line position by the contact of the free end ofa spring plate 36' with the end of the arm 28, the other end of the spring plate being fastened to the arm 32 by a screw 37 The type 27 having been inked by rotation of the 'pad 3 1 and the disc 26, the pad is moved to the dotted line position of Fig. 2 where it is remote from the work and is u'nafl'ectedby the heating of the disc 26.1The pad 34: is moved to its dotted-line position by swinging it about the pivot 33 and this compels the application of sufficient force to move the spring plate 36 over the corner of the arm 28 to its dotted line position. The length of the plate 26 and its mounting is such that it holds the pad 34 against movement in both its full line and dotted line positions. 7
Thus it will be seen that I have provided a novel inking'device and pad for supplying ink to the device as needed, the pad having novel mounting means adapting it to be moved into and out of operative engagement with the work. e
Having thus described my invention, it is obvious that various immaterial modifications may be made in the same without departing from the spirit of my invention; hence I do notwish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact form, construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown anddescribed, or uses mentioned.
Whatl claim-as new and'desire to secure by Letters Patent is: V 1. A portable branding device comprising a handle member, an electricalheating element carried by the handle, said heating element comprising a heat conducting member providing a bore, a resistance coil in said bore, means for energizing said coil, a branding disc rotatably mounted on said heat conducting member, an arm'projecting from the device adjacent said branding disc, a pad mountedon the outer end of the arm, said arm having a joint adapting it to be folded to bring said pad into contact with said disc and when extended to move the pad to a substantial distance from the disc.-
2. A portable branding device comprising a handle member, an electrical heating element carried by the handle, said'heating element comprising a heat conducting member providing a bore in axial alignment with the handle member, a resistance coil-in said'bore, meansfor energizing said coil comprising a pair of conductors extending through the handle, a branding disc mounted on said heat conducting member and rotatable about the longitudinal axis of said bore, an arm projecting from the device adjacent said branding disc, a pad mounted on the outer end of said arm, said arm'having a joint adapting it to be folded to bring said pad into contact with said disc and when extended to move the pad to a substantial distance from the disc, and spring means adapted to yieldingly hold the arm either in extended orfolded position. 3. Aportable branding device comprising a handle member, an electrical heating element carried by the handle, said heating element comprising a heat conducting member providing 'a bore in axial alignment with the handle member, a resistance coil in said bore, means for energizing said coil comprising a pair of conductors extending through the handle, a branding disc mounted on said-heat conducting member and rotatable aboutthe longitudinal axis of said bore, an'arm projecting from the device adjacent said branding disc, a pad rotatably mounted on the outer spring means adapted to 'yieldingly hold the I arm in either extended or said folded position.
