The present invention relates to a stalk cutter and the objects of the invention w1ll become apparent from a detailed consideration of the following descriptlon taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Referring to the drawings in detall, it Wlll be seen that the numeral 5 denotes an elongated axle having wheels 6 ournalled on the ends thereof. Tubular risers 7 extend up- 35 wardly from intermediate portions of the axle 5, thereof one to each side of the center thereof and said risers telescopically receive therein tubular members 8 connected by a cross member 9.
Springs 10 are disposed in the tubular risers 7 and the tubular members 8 and provide a resilient mounting for the frame of the machine. Plates 11 extend forwardly from the cross member 9 and receive therebetween a tongue structure 12 on which is mounted a seat 14. Braces 15 connect the plates 11 and the tubular members 8. A
lever 16 is pivotally mounted intermediate its ends on the tongue and has a detent -on this rocker shaft. Arms 24 are fixed to end portions of the axle 5 and said arms.

Bearings 19 have sleeves 2O adjustably mounted on the risers 7 by means of set screws 21. A rocker shaft 22 is mountedin 5 thebearings 19 to extend transversely across the frame rearwardly of and above the axle 5. A plurality of shields 23 are mounted the ends of the rocker shaft and are downwardiy and rearwardly inturned and are slightly curved upwardly as indlcated in Figure 3.
Obviously by rocking the lever 16, the drums 35 may be let down in engagement with the groundv or raised free therefrom. In place of the drums 35, it will be seen that arms 38 having sleeves 39 may be fixedly mounted on the shaft 28 by means of set screws 40. in a manner to extend rearw-ardly therefrom. Arms 41 each having formed on one end a pair of spaced bearings 42 which are rockable on a shaft 43. This shaft 43 is fixedly mounted in the sleeves 44 on the rear ends of the arms 38. Discs 45 for marking, purposes are journalled on the rear or free ends of the arms 41.
A collar 47 is fixed on the shaft 43 between I each pair of bearings 42 by means of a set screw 50 and has a bracket 51 extending therefrom over the adjacent arm 41 and a spring 53 impinges against thebrackets 51 and the arms 41 to hold the respective discs 45 down into engagement with the ground.
bridgepiece 54 extending between each pair of the bearings 42 is adapted to abut the set screws 50 to limit the downward swinging movement of the arms 41. Obviously, therefore, the marker discs l5 may be raised or lowered by manipulating the lever 16.
One of the wheels 6 may be removed and in place thereof a yoke may be journaled on the axle 5 with a wheel 61 journalled between the extremities thereof. A curved crank arm 62 extends from the yoke 60 and has rack teeth 63 engageable with a gear seg ment 6e on the rocker shaft 22 so that when this rocker shaft is rocked by the lever 16, the yoke 60 will be swung to lower and raise the side of the frame as will be apparent.
This stalk cutter is of two or three or more row construction. VVh'en the structure disclosed in Figures 7 and 8 is substituted for one of the wheels 6, the stalk cutter is adapted to listed row cutting.
ltis though that the construction, operation, utility and advantages of this invention will now be quite apparent to those skilled in this art without a more detailed description thereof. The present embodiment of the invention has been disclosed in considerable detail merely for the purposes of exemplification, since in actual practice it attains the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description.
, It will be apparent that changes in the details of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope axle,
of the invention as hereinafter claimed or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
1. A machine of the character described comprising an axle, supporting wheels journaled on the axle, risers mounted on the axle, bearings mounted on the risers, a rocker shaft journaled in the bearings, means for actuating the rocker shaft, rockable arms on the axle, a shaft fixed to the rockable arms, yokes fixed to the rockable arms, lifting arms fixed to the rocker shaft and operatively engaged with the yokes in a manner to raise and lower the second named shaft, and cutting members operatively mounted on said second named shaft.
2. A machine of the character described comprising an axle, supporting wheels journaled on the axle, risers mounted on the axle, bearings mounted on the risers, a rocker shaft iournaled in the bearings, means for actuating the rocker shaft, rockable arms on the a shaft fixed to the rockable arms, yokes fixed to the rockable arms, lifting arms fixed to the rocker shaft and extending into the yokes for raising and lowering the second named shaft, rollers journaled on the yokes and adapted to ride on the lifting arms, and cutting members operatively mounted on said second named shaft.
