Description

y 1 H. Mv NICHOLLS 1 7 CONTAINER.
Filed Aug. 10, 1929 ATTORNEY Patented July 4, 1933 earns STATES PATENT DFFICE HENRY MILLER NICHOLLS, OF CHICAGG,
ILLINOIS, AS$IGNOR TO AIJIERICAN CAN CQMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. EL, A GJBPGRATIO N OF NEW JERSEY CONTAINER Application filed August 10, 1929.
The present invention relates to a container and has particular reference to a container which is partially opened for discharge of its contents.
The principal object of the present invention is the provision of a container having a top in which is provided sections set off by score lines and which are partially removed to form openings for the discharge of the contents of the container.
An important object of the invention is the provision of a top for a container which is scored to isolate certain areas of the top which are bent away from their closed position to permit discharge of the contents of the container. I
An important object of the invention is the provision of a container top forming a hermetic seal for the container and adaptable for easy opening by partial removal of scored areas to provide discharge and vent openings of such a shape, in the case of liquids, as to insure unobstructed flow thereof in a trajectory of the stream issuing from the container without touching the same and, thus, avoiding soiling of the container or top by misdirecting the flow of the liquid.
Numerous other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as it is better understood from the'following description,
which, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, discloses a preferred em bodiment thereof.
Referring to the drawing Figure 1 is a top plan view of a container embodying the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary enlarged sectional view taken substantially along line 22 in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a container and top, parts of the container being broken away. I
The present invention comprises a con tainer top 11 which may be secured to a container body 12 in a suitable joint, as for example, by a double seam 13. Such a seam forms a hermetic joint between the container and its top. Top 11 is provided with two depressed opposed preferablyoval panels 14 0 whichare provided with a bent rim 15.
Serial No. 384,818}
Score lines 16 are cut partially through the wall of the top within the depressed panels I and these lines set off a triangular area 17 the area triangle to its base outlined by ridge 3 base lines 21.
When the contents of the container are to be discharged, a sharp-pointed instrument 22 may be inserted from above the container top into the score line 16 at the apex 19. The triangular area 17 is then lifted, this action breaking the score lines 16 on the legs of the triangle. The triangle is, thus, bent along its base line 21 to an open position as shown in Fig. 3. This lifting operation of the triangular area 17 provides a triangular opening 23. Both panels 14 are opened in this way to provide the spaced openings 23. One opening 23 may then be used as a discharge opening for discharge of the contents of the container and the opposite opening 23 acts as a vent.
This type of opening provides a hermetically sealed container which is easily opened for discharge of its contents and which is adapted to either liquid or granular substances. Owing to the shape of the discharge opening 23 andits position relative to the seam 13 between the container body 12 and its top 11, the contents of the container is discharged therefrom in a trajectory or stream extending over the joint 13 Without touching the same. The reinforcing of the triangular area 17 permits easy and exact opening of the container thereof.
It is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be understood from the foregoing description, and it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and are rangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or sacrificing all of its material advantages, the form hereinbefore described being mere- 1y a preferred embodiment thereof.
I claim:
1. A container, provided with a top having two similar panels arranged in opposed relation and adapted to be opened, having an outwardly projecting triangular area set 011' by score lines extending along two legs of the triangle the apex thereof pointing away from the center of the top, the base thereof being unscored and being bent outwardly along a hinge line upon breaking of the score lines and lifting of the area which action takes place in the opening of the container, reinforcing means for said triangular area for insuring easy bending thereof as a whole to discharge position, one of the openings formed by hinging of the scored area being then usable as a discharge, pouring opening for the contents of the container while the opposite opening acts as a vent in the discharging operation.
2. A container top bent to form an elongated triangular and convex panel, with its narrow detachable end arranged near the margin of the top and its wider hinge-end arranged toward the center of the top, the top being depressed around said panel and such depression scored with a weakening line around the outer end and along the sides of the panel, and so as to leave an integral hinge at the inner and wider end of the panel, the sides of the panel being bent at a steep angle relative to the plane of the top to stiffen the panel against bending, whereby a perforation and prying-up at the outer end of the panel will detach the panel from the top except at said hinge end.
