The opposite edges of these wall members are shaped as shown, to provide inclined edges 19 and 21, which provide supports for ahopper bottom which will subsequently be described. The end wall members are here shown secured to suitable tabs 22 provided on the bottom section 12, by such means as staples 23. If desired, they may he stitched or gummed thereto.
The blank constituting the side wall sections 9 and the bottom member 12 are provided with suitable score lines 24, 25, 25, 27, 28, and-29, along which score lines, the material is bent or folded when the insert 8 is set up, asshown in Figure 5. Before the end 'wall members 11 are secured to the bottom member 12, the blank from which the wall sections 9 and bottom member 12 are formed, is bent alon the score lines 28, 29, and 28, as shown in igure 6, andtheend wall members 11 are then secured to the tabs 22, whereby a V-shaped spreader 31 will be formed in the section 12 constituting the bottom of the insert, as clearly shown in Figures 3 and 6.
The end wall members 11 are next folded upwardly into vertical positions, as shown at the right hand side of Figure 6, and the side wall sections 9 are then folded or bent along the lines 21, 25, 26, and 2?, so that the edge portions 32 and 33 of the opposite edgesof the wall sections 9, will seat against the inclined edges 19 and 21 oi the end wall members 11, as clearly illustrated Figure 5. The tabs 18 at the upper portions of the wall sections 9 are then bent to the positions shown in Figure 5, so that they will against the outer faces of the end walls 11 and will be supported upon the shoulders 18, whereby the upper portions of the side wall sections 9 will be held in their respective positions with relation to the members 11. If desired, the tabs 13 may be secured to end wall members, but this has been found unnecessary, because when the insert'is fitted 'intothe carton 2, the wall sections 9 and 3.1 will be retained in their proper places by the walls of the carton, so t at they cannot become disarranged. t a

within the carton reatl stren ens the latter so that it may readily be handled transit without danger of damaging the carton or box to cause leakage or the material therefrom. The end walls 11 oi the insert are preferably made from a slightly heavier material than the side wall sections 9 but, some cases, it may be desired to make all of the wall members of the same Weight of material.
The inclined edges 21 of the side walls provide supports for the inclined wall sections 35 so that when the device is set up, as
.shownin Figures 1, 2, and 3, and the box is converted into a feeder, the exposed wall sections 35 will be supported against downward pressure by the inclined edges 21 of the end. walls. The shoulders 18 provided at the upper portions of the end walls ii are engaged by the tabs 13 and provide suitable supports therefor, so that the upper portions oi the side walls cannot become disarranged its been found very useful as a combined feeder with "respect to the end wall members 11. It will also be noted by reference 'to Figure 3, that the spreader 31 provided in the bottom of the insert will divert the material out wardly beneath the feed openings 36, so that the chicks may readil reach all of the material in the insert whereby the latter may be completely emptied of its contents by the chicks or poultry.
It is also to be noted that by constructing the insertas shown in Figures 5 and 6, the inserts may be stacked in bundles, while in the form of blanks, thereby requiring very little storage space, whennot set up for use. The cartons 2- are constructed in the usual manner whereby they may be packed or stored, when empty, in a collapsed or knocked down condition.
. I claim as my invention:
1. In a device of the class described, an outer inclosing member, an insert removably fitted into said enclosing member and comprising a plurality of walls, one of which has a feed opening therein, means on said walls for retaining them in operative posi-- tions when the insert is fitted into said onclosing member, said meansbeing dependent upon the walls of the outer enclosing member for their operation, and means by which said feed opening may be exposed to convert the device into a feeder.
2. In, a device of the character described, an outer enclosing member, an insert removably fitted into said enclosing member and comprising a plurality of walls, one of which has a' feed opening therein, means on said walls adapted for interlocking engagement to retain them in operative positions when the insert is fitted into said enclosing member, said means being dependent-upon the walls of the outer enclosingmember for theiroperation,
' and means in a wall of the outer enclosing member by which said feed opening may be exposed to convert the device into a feeder.
3. In a device of the character described, an outer enclosing member, an insert fitted into said enclosing member and comprising a plurality of walls, one of which has an inclined portion providing a hopper bottom, a portion of a wall of said insert beneath said hopper bottom having a feed opening therein, means at the upper portions of the walls of said insert adaptedfor interlocking engagement to retain said walls in operative positions, when the insert is fitted intosaid enclosing member, and a portion of one of the walls of the outer enclosing member being detachable whereby said feed opening may be exposed to convert the device intoa feeder.
4. In a combination feeder and shipping carton, an outer enclosing member, an insert adapted to be supported'in said enclosing member and having opposite walls thereof provided with inclined portions cooperating to provide a hopper bottom, other inclined wall portions disposed below said hopper bottom and having suitable feed openings therein, detachable means for closing said feed openings when the device is in transit prior to being converted into a feeder, and means in opposite walls of said outer enclosing member by which access may be had to said feed openings.
5. In a combination feeder and shipping carton, an outer enclosing member, an insert adapted to be supported in said enclosing member and having opposite walls thereof provided with inclined portions cooperating to provide a hopper bottom, other inclined wall portions connected with the wall portions forming said hopper bottom and having suitable feed openings therein, sealing strips for closing said feed openings when the device is in transit prior to being converted into a feeder, and means in opposite walls of said outer enclosing member by which access may be had to said feed openings.
6. In a combination feeder and shipping carton, an outer enclosing member, a separable insert adapted to be fitted into said enclosing member, the side walls of said insert having portions inclined'inwardly to provide 7 a hopper bottom, other port-ions of said side walls being inclined in the opposite direction and being connected with said first mentioned inclined portions, said second mentioned inclined wall portions having suitable feed openings therein through which the contents of the insert may be removed when the device is used as a feeder, means for temporarily closing said feed openings when the apparatus is in transit, and suitable perforations in opposite walls of the enclosing member adapted to register with the lower inclined wall portions of the insert. whereby the wall portions bounded by said perforated lines may be detached to gain access to the feed openings.
7. In a combination feeder and shipping carton, an outer enclosing member open at the top and provided with suitable flaps whereby said top may be closed, an insert adapted to be fitted into said member and comprising side walls, end walls and a bottom wall, means whereby said side and end walls may be interlocked at the corners of the insert to retain said walls in their respective positions, means on certain of said walls extending inwardly and cooperating to provide a hopper bottom, whereby all of the material in the insert will feed towards the center thereof, said certain walls also having other inclined wall portions provided with suitable feed openings, and means at the bottom of the insert for diverting the material'outwardly beneath said feed openings.
8. In a combination feeder and shipping carton, a carton open at the top and provided with suitable flaps whereby said top may be closed, an insert adapted to be fitted into said openin' and providing side walls, endwalls, and a 'ottom wall, means whereby said side and endwalls may be interlocked at the corners of theinsert to retain saidwalls in their respective positions, when the insert is supportedin the carton, the side walls of" said insert having portions bent inwardly and outwardly to provide a hopper bottom and also to provide inclined wallsliav- 4 ing feed openings therein, sealing strips for closing said feed Openings when'the appara tus is filled and not in use, and means in the side walls of the carton by which certain portions of said walls may be detached from the carton to gain access to the insert, and whereby said sealing strips may be removed to uncover the feed openings.
9. An insert adapted to be supported in an outer enclosing member, said insert being formed from a blank of sheet material having suitable score lines therein whereby it may be folded to provide aplurality of upright walls, means by which portions of cer tain of said upright walls'may be folded to provide a hopper bottom for the insert thus formed, and means forretaining the walls of the insert in position.
10. An insert adapted to be supported in an outer enclosin member, said insert being formed from a b ank of sheet material having suitable score lines therein whereby the opposite end portions of said blank may be folded to provide the-side walls of the insert, end wall members attached to said blank and adapted to fold upwardlyto provide the end walls of the insert, and means on said end wall members adapted to interlock with means on said side wall members to retain said side and end walls in position.
11. 'An insert, adapted to be supported in an outer enclosing member, said insert being formed from a blank of sheet material having suitable score lines therein whereby the opposite end portions of said blank may be folded to provide side members of a container, oppositely extending tabs on said side wall members, end wall members attached to.
the intermediate portion of said blank and the opposite edges of each end wall member adapted to receive-the tabs on said side wall members to retain'said walls in their respective positions, means wherebge. r-' *tions of said sidewall members may nt inwardly to provide a ho per bottom, and also to provide inclined wa 1 portions having feedopenings therein, and means at the edges of saidside wallmembers adapted for interlocking engagement with the ed of said adaptedto be folded upwardly to pro'vide' the end walls of the container, recesses 1n.
