ln accordance with the invention it is proposed to provide two tray sections for index cards which may be hingedly interconnected adapting them to be folded together when not "20 in use and extended apart and laid flat to expose the banks of cards when in use. The y invention also provides for the introduction at the hinged line of the first two named tray sections of an additional section formed on 25 its reverse faces with accommodations for banks of cards so that when the said additional section is hingedly interconnected to the two first named tray sections the capacity of the index is doubled without modifying the general relationship of any of the sections or increasing materially the bulk of the entire index. More specifically, the desired relationship with the additional section introduced is obtained and convenient operation retained through the provision of a double hinge interposed operatively between the additional section and each of the two firstnamed sections thereby assuring complete flexibility.

' The invention is not limited to any particular type of tray or card mounting since any type that'lends itself to incorporation in tray sections which may be related in accordance with the principle disclosed herein'may beused. As illustrated in Figure l there are shown two metal trays ai, each one of which has accommodations on one side for card holders illustrated as bars b in which are hingedly mounted, respectively, the cards b2 adapted to occupy the usual relationship. y

Similar card holders and cards may, of course, be mounted in the other section a. Each section a, b, has along its proximate edge complementary hinge sections a', 3, respectively, which when brought together will receive a pintle o whereby the two `sections a, b, are hingedly secured together. The connection is such, as will be appreciated from Figure 2, as to permit the two sections to be moved swingably apart about the pintle o so that they may lie flat on a flat surface thereby presenting respective cards for convenient use. Conversely, the two sections being similar in outline may be brought together face to face like the covers of a book thereby making for greatest possible compactness when the trays are not in use and affording suitable protection for the cards.

The construction described is such as to permit the expansion of the improved index to the extent at least of doubling the card capacity by the introduction between the two sections a, of a third section such as illustrated in Figure 3. For economy of manufacture it is preferred to form this additional section Z of two such sections as are illustrated at a and b in Figure 1, placed back to back and united in an available manner as by welding. Two such sections thus united are indicated in Figure 3 at cl, cl2, the resulting section (Z thereby accommodating banks of cards on each surface. The section d carries hinge lugs cl3, (Z4, on its inner edge and these lugs may have two hinge members e, f, pivotally attached to them by means of a pintle g. lVhen the `two sections a, b, have been disconnected by withdrawing the pintle c they may have pivotally attached to them, respectively, the hinge members e, f, by means of separate pintles e', f', passing through the lugs a', 3,

respectively, and aligned lugs e2, f2, on the respective hinge members c, f. When the several hinge elements are thus pivotally interconnected by means of the pintles as described, it will be evident that the center section l is hingedly connected to the outer sections a, Z1. The use of the double hinge elements permits relative pivotal movement between each one of the sections a, b and cl, and the hinge elements to which they may be secured. The expansion of the index thus etfectcd doubles its capacity as will be apparent since a bank of cards may be mounted in each side of the center section d. The use of any of the cards remains as convenient as described in connection with the two sections a, b, in F ig-ure l since the pivotal interconnection permits the sect-ions a, b, to rest iat on a flat surface while one or the other of the bank of cards in the center section (l likewise is presented to view in fiat working position as clearly appears from Figure 5. When all of the sections are folded together the index is very compact having its thickness only affected to the extent of the thickness of the center section cl while the superficial area is no greater.

The flexibility in capacity thus afforded is of importance to the user since a greater or lesser number of parts may be used as may be needed. Since the tray sections are rigid elements they permit convenient handling of the entire index and its portable and compact nature enables it to be placed within a very small space such as a desk drawer or cabinet.

Changes in the character of the trays and card supports and the form and type of pivotal interconnections may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention so long as the general principle disclosed is retained.

lVhat I claim is:

An expansible visible index comprising card trays having complementary hinge members secur d to their edges, respectively, an intermediate card tray having two hinge members secured pivotally along one edge, said members being complementary to the first named hinge members, respectively, and removable means to secure the second named hinge members pivotally to the rst named hinge members, respectively.
