This inventionrelates generally toan improvement in cow tail holders or the like, and

relates particularly to a cow tail holder of new and novel structure and proportlons, liavlng advantages of operation and manufacture not heretofore exhibited inthe art.

It is an object of this invention to provide a convenient and quickly and easily installable device of the character'described which will release the tail of the animal in an'emergency without injury thereto, and which may be suspended by any suitablemeans from the wall of ajmilking stall, or suspended upon a wire running through a barn and slidable thereon for convenient placement wherever desired.

The jaw structure 5 has a plate .113 centrally bent to provide'journals 1 1 for a rectangularly bent wire or bar 15 which has one longitudinalside 16 journaled in the j ournaled portions 14: of the plate 13, and has the other longitudinal side thereof broken to provide a pair of inwardly directed spaced projections 17 adapted to enter and be anchored in the outward side 80f the jaw structure 6, and bracing the same as seen in Figure 3. This arrangement pivots the jaw structures'5 and 6 just inwardly of the concavities 9 and 10. n t

Passed through a metal lined or other suitably construct'ed bore 18 in the aw structure 6 is awire or" cord 19 which is tethered as at 20 in another bore 21 also transversely con- 'str'uoted in the jaw structure 5. The cord 19' is adaptedto be suspended upon a nail or'the likeor to have av suitable means for carrying it upon a wire strung across the barn.

For imparting the requisite clamping action 'of' the jaw structures 5 and 6 there is placed about or outwardly of the structure 15 a solid rubber band '22 adapted to be slipped inwardly and consequently stretched upon the tail gripping portions :of the jaw structures 5 and6. This rubber band is readily replaceable when worn out andprovides a cheap and convenient te'nsioning means for the jaws.

VVh'at is claimed is 1. A tail holder comprising a pair of jaw members having cooperating surfaces for engaging a tail, ahinge connection between the members whereby the members may be rocked upon one another for separating said cooperating surfaces for reception of a tail therebetween, closing means surroundingthe members for normally maintaining said cooperating surfaces together, said hinge connectioncomprising a journal means'mounted on the inward side of one member and a frame embracing the other member and having a portion journalled in said journal means whereby the inward side of the said 0 other member is maintained rockably engaged with said journalmeans.

2. A tail holder comprising a pair of rochably related members having each on their meeting faces a curved protuberance, a rock- 1 able connection between the members comprising a journal meanslon the protuberance of one member and a frame embracing the other member adjacent its protuberance and having a portion journalled in said journal 1 0 member whereby the protuberance of the said other member rockably engages the journal means so as to condition easy and wide rocking of the members relative to each other, and means surrounding the members at one side of said protuberances for urging one end of the members normally together for holding a tail therebetween, said means being adapted to permit said end of the members to be yieldably separated by rocking the members.

A tail holder comprising a pair of rockably related members having each on one end a curved meeting face, a protuberance on each member near its middle point, a rock able connection between the members connecting the protuberances, said connection comprising journal means on the protuberance of one member and a frame embracing the other member adjacent its protuberance and having a portion journalled in said journal member whereby the protuberance of the said other member rockably engages the journal means so as to condition easy and Wide rocking of the members relative to each other, and means surrounding the curved meeting surfaces of the members for urging the curved faces together for holding a tail therebetween, said means being adapted to yield to permit separation of the curved faces by rocking the members, and means for suspending the holder by both members thereof, comprising, a cord passed through an opening provided in the remaining end of one of said members and anchored in a similar opening in the remaining end of the other of said members, whereby free rockingof the members is permitted while the holder is suspended. I

4. A tail holder of the type described comprising a pair of handled tail-gripping mem bers, opposed curved surfaces at one end of the members constituting tail-gripping aws,

connection means for rockably connecting the members in side-by-side opposed relationshlp, said means COIDPIISIDg ournal means on the inner side of one member, and pivot means on the inner side of the other member received in said journal means, and constricting means surrounding the members and located between the connection means and the tail gripping jaws for urging the jaws together.

A tall holder of the type described comprising a pair of handled tail-gripping members, opposed curved surfaces at one end of the members constituting tail-gripping jaws, connection means for rockably connecting the members in side-by-side opposed relationship, said means comprising journal means on the inner side of one member, and pivot means on the inner side of the other member received in said journal means, and. constricting means surrounding the members and located between the connection means and the tail gripping jaws for urging the jaws together, and holder suspending means comprising a cord freely passed through an opening in one member and secured in. anopening in the other member, whereby the holder may be suspended by both members without interfering with the action of the tail-gripping members.

6. A tail holder comprising a pair of jaw 7 members having near one end co-operating surface for clamping a tail therebetween,

connection means for rockably connecting the jaw members in opposed side-by-side re lationship, said. connection means comprising a frame embracing one jaw member, piv- 'ot means carried by the frame at the inner side of the jaw members, journal means on the inner side of the other jaw member and receiving the pivot means, and contracting means embracing the jaw members and located between the connection means and the end of the jaw members having the co-operating surfaces, whereby the'last-mentioned end of the aw members are resiliently urged together.
