Description

J. J. PLANK 1,915,759
June 27, 1933.
DANDY ROLL Filed Oct. 19, 1932 Patented June 27, 1933 UNITED STATES JOSEPH J. PLANK, OF APPLETON, WISCONSIN DANDY ROLL Application filed October 19, 1932. Serial No. 638,623.
The present invention relates to improvements in paper making machinery and particularly to a novel dandy roll which is peculiarly designed and constructed so as to obtain a strong and absolutely rigid construction, which is desirable for many reasons known in the art.
The invention contemplates a dandy roll which is formed of flat tape material instead of round wire, making a much more rigid construction than any heretofore built.
For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing in which Figure l is a side elevation of a part of a dandy roll constructed in accordance with the invention, with portions broken away. Figure 2 is a cross section. Figure 3 is an enlarged section of part of Figure 2. Figure 4 is a detail in longitudinal section. Figure 5 shows a riveted and soldered joint between members of the foundation truss.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawing by the same reference characters. Referring specifically to the embodiment of the invention shown on the drawing, A designates the heads of the roll, of which there are two, the heads being circular and having various sized journals. The heads are rabbete'd at each edge to provide for the longitudinal bars D of the truss which are soldered or otherwise fastened to the heads at each end. These longitudinal bars D are spaced uniformly around the circumference of the roll and are made of fiat'or strip material presented edgewise to the periphery. Arranged within the longitudinal bars is a flat tape coil or truss B, made up of a series of adjacent rings which are offset or bent laterally and joined at the corners or bends to form continuous convolutions uniformly spaced to form angular or diamond shaped trusses, the joints of which are riveted as at M in addition ti'flieing brazed or soldered as at N to prevent twisting. These convelutions continue throughout the roll as shown at H in a spiral or thread line to hold the flat winding tape I which is wound spirally from one end of the roll to the other to form a smooth surface for the wire screen covering L, these parts being suitably soldered or fastened together to hold them in lace.
It will be noticed that by the construction shown the rings B, bars D and tape I are all presented edgewise to the periphery, thereby forming a strong and rigid structure against radial stress or pressure. Also the diamond assembly of the rings B and the notched interlock of the various parts prevent buckling or distortion under twisting strain, and the whole results in a superior article for the intended purpose.
I claim: I
1. A dandy roll comprising a pair of spaced heads, a cylindrical support between the heads, made of a series of separate rings.
of flat material offset to form angular trusses fixed to each other at the adjacent corners, longitudinal bars extending between the heads and fixed to the outer edges of said rings, a flat tape extending around the roll upon said bars, and a screen covering around the tape.
2. A dandy roll as in claim 1, the bars being flat and having notches in a spiral line in their outer edges, and the tape being engaged at its inner edge in said notches.
3. A dandy roll having an inner supporting frame made of a series of separate adjacent rings of fiat material each ofi'set at intervals to opposite sides of the plane of the ring, forming angles, the fiat sides of adjacent rings being rivet-ed to each other at the angles and forming diamond shaped trusses throughout the frame.
4. A dandy roll as in claim 3, the outer edges of the rings having notches, and flat longitudinal bars extending across said rings and the inner edges of which are engaged in said notches.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature.
JOSEPH J. 'PLANK.
