The present invention relates to electrolytic condensers.
The usual electrolytic condenser comprises a container having a cover from which is The anode is usually made of aluminum and is supported on the cover by a post of conducting material which serves as the terminal of the condenser. The electrolyte covers the anode but since the upper surface of the electrolyte covers only a portion of the post, there is likely to be a leakageconduction by edge effect, that is, directly between the surface of the electrolyte and the exposed part of the post. The post is, of course. formed with a film but since the portion which is not immersed, may deteriorate and form pin holes, leakage conduction can nevertheless take place in the form of minute sparks.
The object of the present invention is to provide an electrolytic condenser of simple and inexpensive construction and so assembled as to present no opportunity for leakage conduction at the surface of the electrolyte.
lVith this object in view, one feature of the invention comprises a construction whereby all positive surfaces, including all portions of the anode and its support, are completely innnersed in the electrolyte. In simplest and best form, the anode is placed at the bottom of the container and is directly attachedto or formed integrally with the cover, whereby the surface of the electrolyte is at all times maintained well above the The accompanying drawing is an elevation partly in section of the preferred form of condenser.
The illustrated embodiment of the invenition comprises a container 1, which is of conducting material such as copper and which isformed with an annular groove 2, forming a seat for the cover. The container is provided at the top with a vent 3 of suitable form.
The container is closed by a cover 4 of filming material such as aluminum which is constructed internally with an extended surface in the form of fins 5. The combined cover 53 and anode are preferably die cast integrally.
After the container is filled with electrolyte, the anode is inserted in place, resting on the seat 2, the assembly being sealed by a soft rubber gasket 6. The outer edge of the container is then spun at 7 to seal the anode in place.
The anode is formed externally with an integral threaded post 8 to receive a nut 9, serving as a positive terminal for the condenser. A negative lead 10, may be suitably attached as by soldering to any part of the copper container.
The construction as above described commends itself because of its simplicity and cheapness of manufacture comprising as it does only two major parts, namely, the container-and the combined anode and cover..
Moreover, all difliculties Which occur in the ordinary condenser due to edge effect are completely avoided because no part of the formed positive member extends out of the surface of the electrolyte at any point.
In addition to the elimination of troublesome edge effects, the present invention possesses other advantages, particularly when used in a filter circuit for radio receivers, in that it permits all connections to be made below the usual metallic panel or base of the receiver.
Vhat is claimed is: v
1. An electrolytic condenser comprising a container having an open bottom, a closure for the bottom of the container constructed entirely of filming material and having extended filming surfaces formed thereon and projecting upwardly into the container, the cover and connected portions being filmed to form an anode, and an electrolyte covering all anode surfaces within the container.
2. An electrolytic condenser comprising a container having an open bottom, a cover of filming material to completely close the bottom of the container and having integral portions extending upwardly into the container to form an anode surface, and an electrolyte inwhi ch the cover and the integral projecting portions are completely immersed.
