HAND BAG 7 Filed July 20, 1931 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 IN VEN TOR.
A TTORNEX Patented June 27, 1933 UNITED STATES PATENT 4 OFFICE WILLIAM C. HIERING, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR T J. E. MERGOTT COMPANY, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE HAND BAG Application filed July 20, 1931. Serial No. 551,921.
This invention relates to hand bags, and more particularly to hand bag frames and means for attaching covering material to) such frames.
Handbags are extensively manufactured with metal frames to which the covering material, such as leather or cloth, is attached. In many instances the covering material is sewed to the frame, but in order to facilitate the manufacture and improve the appearance of bags, it is desirable to attach the covering material to the frame by means other than sewing.
It is an object of this invention to provide a handbag having a frame to which the bag covering material is securely clamped.
A further object is the provision of a channeled hand bag frame receiving and securely holding an insert to which covering material for a handbag is attached by means other than sewing.
These and other advantageous objects, which will later appear, are accomplished by the simple and practical construction and C5 arrangement of parts hereinafter described and exhibited in the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a handbag embodying the invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. I
Figure 3 is a side view of a frame member employed in the bag.
Figure 4 is a side view of an insert with covering material attached thereto.
Figure 5 is an enlarged perspective view of a section of the frame member.
Figure 6 is a perspective view of an insert used in connection with the frame member.
Figure 7 is a side View of the frame member having positioned therein an insert to which covering material is attached.
Figure 8 is a perspective showing an insert with material attached thereto in condition to be positioned in a frame member.
Figure 9 is a perspective view showing the first operation of securing the insert in the frame member. ,8
Figure 10 is a view showing the insert 63 clamped securely in the frame member.
bag frame is shown to consist of two similar, 6
hingedly connected frame members 1 and 2, each member being made from a suitable blank of material bent to present, in cross section, an outwardly disposed channel, comprisin a relatively long inner side wall 15 85 provi ed with top and bottom flanges 14 and 16 directed outwardly at right angles thereto, the top flange 14 being relatively narrow, the bottom flange 16 being wider and provided with elongated apertures 18 to enable it to be readily bent upwardly (see Fig. 5) to provide a second and outer side wall 16', parallel with the inner side wall 15, for a purpose to be presently explained. The bottom flange 16 is cut away at the corners 17 of the frame member 1 (see Fig. 11).
In the preferred form of my invention, the bag material 20, which may be leather, cloth or the like is laid out in a flat position, and then a channelled insert 19, referably consistin of three pieces, one or the longitudinal e ge and two for the side edges of the bag material, is slipped on the edges thereof, and thechannelled insert '19 is crimped at spaced points 21 (see Fig. 8) to rigidly hold the bag material 20 therein.
Two inserts, such as described, are used, each insert accommodating the material for one-half of the bag. The bag material 20 99 is then suspended over the top edges of the inserts'(see Fig. 6), assuming the normal suspended position in which it appears in the finished bag.
The insert 19, carrying the bag material 95 20 is placed in the frame memberl 1n the position shown in Figs. 8 and 9 and then the wide bottom flange 16 of said frame member is bent, along the apertures 18, upwardly to form the outer side wall 16' so as 100 to clamp the insert within the frame member, as clearly shown in Figs. 9 and 10.
In Figs. 12 and 13 is shown a form of the invention in which the insert is omitted. Fig. 13 shows a frame member, similar to that shown in Fig. 3, with a top flange 30, and a bottom flange 31, said flange 31 being bent upwardly to present an outer wall 32 parallel to the inner wall 37, the upper free edge 33 of the outer Wall 32 being bent inwardly to grip the bag material 35. The outer wall 32 also has a plurality of holes 34 through which the bag material 35 bulges, thus providing additional means for holding the material in position.
In Fig. 12, the bag material 35 is shown having a sheet of padding 36, interposed therebetween.
From the above description it will be seen that Ihave provided simple and effective means for securing covering material to a frame member in a neat and pleasing manner.
The foregoing is to be regarded as descriptive and illustrative only, and not as restrictive or limitative of the invention, of which, obviously, an embodiment may be constructed including modifications without departing from the general scope herein indicated and denoted in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a hand bag, a frame member comprising an inner side wall provided with top and bottom flanges projecting outwardly at an angle thereto, in the same direction the bottom flange being provided with weakening apertures to enable it to be bent upwardly to present an outer side wall parallel to the inner side wall of the frame member to securely hold the bag covering material in the frame member.
2. In a hand bag, a frame member comprising an inner side wall provided with top and bottom flanges, a channelled insert carrying bag covering material, said insert being positioned in the frame member, and means on the bottom flange of said frame bent upwardly to present an outer side wall bearing against the insert to hold the same in the frame member.
3. In a hand bag, a pair of hingedly coni nected channelled frame members, the channels of the frame members opening outwardly and laterally relative to the bag, said frame members having inner side walls abutting each other when the bag is closed, each member having a top flange and a bottom flange, inserts positioned in the members, said inserts carrying bag covering material, and means on the bottom flanges of said frames bent upwardly to securely hold the inserts in the channels.
4. In a hand bag, a frame membencomprising an inner side wall provided with top and bottom flanges projecting outwardly in the same direction, an insert having bag covering material secured thereto, said insert being positioned in the frame member, and means on the bottom flange to hold the insert in the frame member.
5. In a hand bag, a frame member comprising an inner side wall provided with top and bottom flanges projecting outwardly at an angle thereto in the same direction, and means on the bottom flange bent upwardly parallel to the inner side wall to securely hold the bag covering material in the frame member.
This specification signed this 14th day of July, 1931.
WILLIAM C. HIERING.
