The invention relates to improvements in safety razors equipped with combined hones and guards, and especially to constructional features facilitating the positioning of the razor bl-ade into several operative positions with respect to the combined hone and guard.
Further objects of the invention will appear from the following description when read in connection with the accompanying drawings which show an illustrative embodiment of the invention, and wherein Fig. 1 is a side view;
Fig. 2 is a rear view;
Fig. 3 is a plan view;
Fig. 4 is a side view from the left of Fig. 2 with the parts swung open;
Fig. 5 is a central vertical section on line 5-.5 of Fig. 2; y
Fig. 6 is a plan view with the blade cap Y and blade removed; and
Fig. 7 is a plan view with the blade supporting plate removed.
As shown the device comprises a hollow x handle 10 closed by a screw cap 11 to provide a receptacle for dressing paste to be used on the hone.
Supported on the handle is a frame plate 12 provided with a socket 13 threaded on the Y end 14 of the handle 10.
A combined hone and guard roller 15 may be rotatably supported in down-turned ears 16 and 17 on the frame plate 12. In order that the hone when it is rotated m-ay act upon all portions of the edge of the blade and also act as a guard, the same is formed with a spiral rib 18 which will act upon every portion of the edge of the blade. The roller may be mad-e of any one of a variety of materials but it is preferred to use a metal as it is found that metal even if polished will eiiiciently sharpen the edge of the blade, especally when an abradant paste is applied to it.
The razor blade may be mounted on a base plate 19 provided with down-turned ears 20 lying between upwardly extending ears` 21 on the frame plate 12. A shaft 22 passing through the ears 20, 21 may serve as a pivot.

standing between extensions 28 of the ears 21 of the frame plate and pivoted thereto by means of the rod 29 may be provided to clamp the blade 23 on the plate 19. The plate 26 is shown as arched between its edges whereby only its forward edge contacts with the blade 23. The stud projects through and above the plate 26 and is provided with an annular groove 30 for cooperation with a cam-edged member 33 on a latch member 31 pivoted at 32 upon the cap 26.
rlhe edge of the blade may be pressed toward the roller 15 by a spring 34 riveted to the frame plate 12 provided with inwardly curved ends 35 coacting with a cam surface on the ears 20 as indicated at 36, Figs. 1 and 4. The blade will thus be urged toward the roller when in the position of Fig. 1 and maintained in -anelevated position when the cap plate is swung to the position of Fig. 4. The razor blade may be held in spaced relation to the roller 15 while the razor is in use for shaving by means of a stud 37 bearing against the plate 19. This stud may be carried by a lever 38 projecting at 39 beyond the frame plate 12 for manipulation, and pivoted on the frame plate 12 by means of a screw 40, stops 41 and 42 being provided to limit its movement.
When the lever is in the position shown in Fig. 7 the stud 37 supports the blade 23 in spaced relation to the roller against the pressure of the spring 34. As the lever 38 is rocked counter-clockwise, Fig. 7, the stud 37 will permit the spring 34 to lower the edge of the blade into contact with the rib 18 of the sharpening roller.
The roller 15 may be rotated by drawing it over any suitable surface as a table or the palm of the hand. The roller may also be rearward extension 44 of the latch will throw I` the cap plate 26 into opened position, permitting removal of the blade 23 for cleaning, replacement, or reversal. The movement of the latch 31 may be limited by a stop member 45.
While a single embodimentof the invention has been illustrated and described for purposes of disclosure, it is obvious that the invention is not limited thereto, and it is to be understood that the terms used in the claims are Words of description and not of limitation.
What I claim is:
1. A safety razor comprising, in combination, a frame, a combined rotatable hone and guard mounted adjacent an edge thereof, means for movably supporting a blade on said frame, spring means normally urging said blade into contact With said hone for honing, and means for spacing and holding said blade spaced from said hone in shaving position, said means including a member having sliding engagement with the blade supporting means.
2. A safety razor comprising, in combination, a frame, a combined rotatable hone and guard mounted adjacent an edge thereof, means for movably supporting a blade on said frame at an angle to the plane thereof, means for moving and resiliently pressing an edge of said blade against said hone in honing position, and means movably mounted on the outer face of said frame for movement parallel with the plane of said frame to engage and move said mounting means and to hold the edge of the blade spaced from said hone in shaving position against the influence of said pressing means.
. 3. A safety razor comprising, in combination, a frame, a combined rotatable hone and guard member mounted adjacent an edge thereof, a relatively high spiral surface rib on said member, means movably supporting a blade on said frame, means for moving and pressing an edge of the blade against said rib for honing, and pivoted adjusting means movable across the face of said blade supporting means for moving said blade and for holding the edge thereof spaced at any desired distance from said ribs for regulating closeness of shave.
4. A safety razor comprising, in combination, a frame formed with a pair of downturned ears at one side edge and a pair of upturned ears at the other side edge, a combined hone and'guard member journaled in said down-turned ears to rotate adjacent an edge of the frame, blade supporting means pivoted on said upturned ears to extend at an angle toward said other side edge-of said frame, resilient means urging the edge of a blade carried by said support into contact with said member for honing, and means for moving said support and holding the same to position the edge of the blade spaced with respect to said member, said support moving means including a member having sliding engagement with the outer surface of said frame and the inner surface of said blade supporting means.
5. A safety razor comprising, in combination, a frame formed with a pair of downturned ears and a pair of upturned ears, a combined hone and guard member, stub shafts projecting fromthe ends of said member and journaled in said down-turned ears to rotatably support the member adjacent an edge of the frame, an actuating member secured on one of said stub shafts, blade supporting means pivotally mounted upon said upturned ears, resilient means operating on said support for urging the edge ofl a blade carried by said support into contact with said member for honing, and means for moving said support to and holding the same in shaving position with the edge of the blade spaced from said member.
6. A safety razor comprising, in combination, a handle, a frame plate secured to one end of said handle, a cylindrical combined hone and guard member rotatably supported adjacent an edge of the plate and to the rear of said plate, the plane of the face of the plate opposite said handle being substantially tangential to said member., a blade supporting plate pivotally mounted ou said frame plate normally at an angle thereto, resilient means urging said supporting plate about its pivot to press the edge of a blade carried thereby against said member, and an adjusting and spacing member movably mounted on said frame plate for movement parallel With the plane thereof into sliding contact with said supporting plate for ad justing the positionof the same.
7. A safety razor comprising, in combination, a frame having spaced ears, a blade supporting member havingA spaced ears overlapping said frame ears and pivoted thereto, the second named ears having cam portions extending beyond the pivots, a spring plate secured between its ends upon said frame and said ends resiliently engaging said Cam portions, and a combined hone and guard rotatably supported on said frame for cooperation with a blade carried by said member, said cam portions being shaped so that said spring presses the edge of the blade toward the hone and guard in one position of rotation of the member about its pivots and away therefrom in a second position.
