The invention relates to'valves for controlling flow of fluid and consists in the combinations of elements hereinafter set forth and particularly pointed out in the claims appendant hereto.
Referring to the accompanying drawin s:-
igure 1 shows a cross-sectional elevation of one form of the present invention in Which the main inlet valve is mounted on one spindle while the combined main outlet and leak-E valves are mounted on a second spindle.
Figure 2 is an elevation to a smaller scale showing the method, of supporting handoperating yoke.
In carrying the invention into effect according to the form shown in the drawings, the main inlet valve, 1:, 5, is of the doublebeat type seating in an upward direction and is co-a-xially mounted on a spindle, d. The two parts of the valves are shown with piston shirts, a, b, respectively co-acting with their respective seatings, a 5 the in let being at 0 while a duct, Fe, is provided round the double heat valve.
The main outlet valve and leak-oil valve are embodied in the form of a single piston valve having operative pistons, 13*, t serv ing respectively for the control of the main outlet ports, 8, and the leak-oil ports, at, the ports, 8, leading into a surrounding duct, 0, and thence to the outlet, r, while the ports, a, lead into a surrounding duct, 7c, having a connection, m, to the'condenser or elsewhere.
According to this constructiomthe steam that has passed the main inlet valve and on tered the duct, h, passes through the port or ports, h, into the space, t, between the two pistons, t and v for distribution according to the seating of the valve.
All the valves are mounted within a common casing, a, but the piston valve is mounted co-axially on a separate spindle, (i which is positively connected with the spindle, J, of the main inlet valve by way of a lever, 2, fulcrumed at 3 and pivotally connected at its ends, 4 and 5, to the spindles, d and (i respectively'.
The operating gear may be of any usual type as shown co-operating with the yoke, g, and actuated by the hand wheel, 6, the yoke, 9 being supported from the casing cover by means of the studs, g.
l/Vith the valves in the position shown in the drawings, that is to say, with the main inlet valve closed, it will be seen that the ports, 8, to the main outlet are likewise closed but that the ports, 11, to the leak-oii'outlet are opened, Vihen the main inlet valve is opened, the piston valve moves upwards, the piston, then opening the ports, 8, to the main outlet, 1", and the piston, t closing the ports, 91, to the leak-off outlet.
As the spindles, d, 0?, are positively interconnected by the lever, 2, and as the main valve, a, b, and the piston valve, t, are rigidly mounted on these spindles respectively, there is no lost motion either ofthe spindles in relation to one another or of the valves in relation to their spindles.
The valve gear described is especially zip-- plicahle, though not restricted, to marine turbine installations in which it is impon tant to prevent steam leaking to the esters turbine when'the vessel is going ahead. such a case the double-beat valve, a 6, constitutes the main valve controlling the astern turbine, any leakage past this valve when closed being led-oil through the ports, a, and leak-oil outlet, m, to the condenser or elsewhere.
Variations in detail maybe made without exceeding the scope of the invention.
By the term positive connection in the accompanying specification and claims, we mean the connection between two spindles such that whatever movement is given to one of snchspindles, is transmitted without lostmotion to the other of such spindles.
Having now described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is-: i
1. A fluid-controlling device comprising in combination, valve-casing means having inlet and main and leak-oil outlet ducts and disposed within said valve-casing means, inlet valve means and main outlet and leak-oil valve means; together with a pair of positively-associated spindles on which said valve means are mounted in such relation thereto and to said ducts that when said inlet a'nd said main outlet ducts are both closed, said leak-01f duct is open, said positively associated spindles including a lever pivoted at an intermediate pointpositively and connected at each end to one of said spindles.
2. A fluid-controlling device as claimed in claim 1, in which a single valve instrumentality mounted on one of said spindles and other than said inlet valve means serves to control said main outlet and leak-off outlet ducts.
3. A fiuid'controlling device as claimed in claim 1, having two pistons spaced apart on one of said spindles, one of said pistons controlling said main outlet duct and the Ether of said pistons controlling said leak-oi! not.
4. Fluid-controlling device as claimed in claim 1, in which said valve-casing means comprises two sections interconnected by a duct, said inlet valve means being disposed in one of said sections and said main outlet and leak-off valve means in the other of said sections.
5. Fluid-controlling device as claimed in claim 1, in which said valve-casing means comprises two sections interconnected b a duct, said inlet valve means being dispose in one of said sections and said mam outlet and leak-0E valve means in the other of said sections, said main outlet and leak-ofi' valve means comprising a pair of pistons spaced apart on one of said spindles, said interconnecting duct leading to the space between said pistons.
