PICE, F ASTORIA; OREGON SCREW JACK as hereinafter "setforth, an elevating and lowering'device of the class referred to including a revol'ubleheadfor adjusting the lifting screw and with the head being socketedltofreceive a means for revolving the Head andoperating it in a horizontally disp'o's'ed'p'ath. m A'furthr object of the invention is to provide,.in"a manner as hereinafter set forth, aidevicelof the class referred to including a horizontallyrevoluble head for adjusting theflifting'screw, a base upon which the head-{is 'suppo'rted' and revolves about, and meansgwithin the baseflfor-preventing the separation of 'thefliead therefrom.
"Further objectsof the inventionare to provide, in a'manner as hereinafter set forth, a device, of the class referred to which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, compact, thoroughly efiicient-in itsuse, conveniently operated, not binding and substantially free of friction when actuated, enabling for an extended lowering. movement of the lifting screw thereby permitting of using a screw of greater length than now employed, and inexpensive to manufacture.
To the above ends essentially, and to others which may'hereinafter appear, the
invention consists of such parts, and such combination. of parts. as fallwithin the scope of the invention as claimed.
In the drawings: "Figure 1 is a side elevation of a screw jackein accordance with this invention.
fFigure 2 is a vertical sectional view there- 0 Figure 3 is a section on line 3-3 Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a section on line 4-4 Figure 2.
Figure 5 is' avertical sectional view of a modified form. I
Figure 6 is a fragmentary view in section illustrating a modification with respect to the bearing element.
Referring toFigures 1 to 4 of the drawings, thejack includes a base 1 including a lower portion in the form of an annulus 2 of the desired height and inner diameter and which 7 Application filed May 28, 1932. Serial No. 614,264.
has a'beveled outer edge 3. The top of annulus 2 is formed with an annular boss 3 which registers with the inner edge 3" of annulus 2. Formed integral with the boss 3 isa've'rtically disposed sleeve 4 having its outer face spaced adjacent the edge 3 and inner face spaced inwardly of the inner edge 3 to provide an annular stop 6,0r in other words sleeve'4is inset with respect to edge 3" to provide. the stop 6. The boss 3' is spaced inwardly from edge 3 to provide for the outer portion 7 of the top of annulus 2 to be exposed. The stop 6 extends above the portion 7 of the top of annulus2. The sleeve 4 is of greater height than annulus 2 and has 55 its upper edge provided with an annular groove 8ofcirc1ilar cross section. The groove 8 provides a ball race. The outer face of sleeve 4 is flush with the outer edge of boss 3'.
The jack also includes a horizontally revoluble adjusting head,9'for the elevating and lowering screw 10. Thehead 9 consists of a circular body part 11 of greater diameter than the sleeve and of a diameter substantially the same as the smallest outer diameter of the annulus. The body part 11 is formed with radially disposed sockets 12 opening at the periphery thereof, and an axial vertically disposed bore.13 having the wall thereof threaded throughout. The bore 13 extends from the top to the bottom of said body part, and formed integral with the bottom of the latter is a depending annular outer skirt 14 which encompasses in spaced relation the sleeve 4. The skirt 14 extends to a point in close proximity to the portion 7 of the top of the annulus 2. The bottom of skirt 14 is arranged in alignment with the bottom of sleeve 4. Formed integral with bottom of body part 11, as well asdepending therefrom, is a sleeve or inner skirt part 15 arranged in spaced relation and concentric to skirt 14. The sleeve 15 is disposed within sleeve 4 and is spaced therefrom- The bottom of sleeve 15 aligns with the bottom of sleeve 4 and sldrt 14. The bottom of body part 11 between skirt 14 and sleeve 15 is. formed with an annular groove 16 of circular cross section. The groove 16 provides a ball race and opposes in spaced relation the groove 8.
The screw 10 is of a length greater than the combined length of the base and head, extends through the latter and threadedly engages with the threads of the wall of bore 13.
The upper end of screw 11 is formed with a flared serrated abutment head 16'.
Interposed between the bottom of body part ll jarid'thewtop of sleeve f1, travelling in the races provided by the grooves and confined by the skirt 14 and sleeve 15 is an annular bearing element 17'. of? the balli type. The element 17 is spaced from skirt 1 1 and sleeve 15.
