DIPPER CONSTRUCTION Filed Aug. 25, 1952 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 A 55 :\v M m- ]35 W 17 fiver-42 071 P tion 14 constitute the improved Patented June 13, 1933 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE EDWARD 8. BLACK, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOB '10 PETTIBONE MULLIKEN COMPANY, A. CORPORATION OF DELAWARE DIPPEB CONSTRUCTION The invention relates to dippers, or buckets, of the type shown and described 1n my co-pendin application, Senal N0. 618,389, filed gune 20, 1932, d1ppers or buckets of this type being used in excavatlng or similar work.
The primary object of the mventlon 1s to rovide im roved front construction for a abricated 'pper or bucket of the character described.
Another object is to provide. a dipper 0r bucket in which portions of the front construction may be assembled or dls-assembled with comparative ease and, preferably, wlthout inserting or removing .r1vets or other relatively permanent fastening devlces.
Other objects and advantages w1ll become apparent as the following deta1led description progresses, reference belng had to the accompanying drawings, 'wherem- Figure 1 is a view in side elevatlon of a dipper or bucket which embodies the mvention.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary face view of the di per front.
' igure 3 is a view loolnng at the left hand end of the improved dipper as it is vlewed m Figure 1, Figure 3 being partly in sectlon to illustrate certain details of construction, and
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary section taken on line 4-4 of Figure Referring to the drawings wherein a 1preferred embodiment of the invention s 1 ustrated, the reference character 5 designates generally the bod portion of the improved dipper, which bo y portion may be of any sultable or preferred construction. The side walls of the body portion 5 are designated by the reference character 6 and terminate short of the front or digging wall of the d1pper.
In the particular construction illustrated, the improved dipper front comprises a main body section 13 and an upper lip section 14 which is interlocked with the body section 13 and provides seats for a plurality of dipper teeth .1 5. Intermediate the seats for the dipper teeth 15, the upper lip section 14 is pro vided with cutting edge portions 16.
The body section 13 and the upper li secipper rent,
in this instance, and are of general trou h shape as shown in Figure 3, the main body section 13 having rearwardly extending side plates or win s 12 which are secured to the Slde walls 6 by rivets 7 or the equivalent. The upper lip section 14 is provided with rearwardly extending wings or side plates 14?), the side plates 14b being formed integral with the front wall 14a of the upper lip section 14.
A rib 17 preferably formed inte ral with the main body section 13 is provided with .an upwardly extending flange 20. The rib 17 and the flange 20 extend continuously across the front surface of the main body section 13 and, in this instance, a little more than half way across the side plates 12 of the body section 13. (See Figures land 3).
' The upper edge of the body section 13 is provided with an upwardly extending flange 21 ofi'set forwardly from the rear face 22 of the body section.
The flange 21 extends across the entire front surface of the body section 13 and more than half way back along the outer surfaces of the side plates 12. 1
The outer or front surface of the body section 13 is provided, between the rib 17 and the flange 21, with a series of spaced, substantially parallel ribs 23 which extend lengthwise of the dipper front, these ribs being shown as extending at their outer faces, designated as 24, substantially flush with the outer faceof the flange 21, but short of the rear surface of the flange 20.
The lip section 14 and the body section 13 are preferably provided as castings. The lip section 14 is formed of a cored body portion 26 which extends along the upper edge .portion of the body section 13 and around the sides thereof as shown (Figures 3 and 4), the body portion 26 being provided with an integral skirt portion 28 which terminates at its lower edge in a de ending rear wardly offset flange 29 adapte to enter the space between t e flange 20 and the outer surface of the body section 13. (See Figure 4).
The body portion 26 is provided at its rear edge with a depending flange 30 adapted to hook over the flange 21 on the body section 13 and interlocked therewith as shown, the rear face 31 of the flange 30 being substantially flush with the rear or inner surface 22 of the body section 13. It inner or rear surface. of the skirt 28 abuts a ainst the surfaces 24 of the ribs 23 with w hich the body section 13 is provided.
The body provided with spaced toothed bases 33 formed integral therewith. The bases 33 are cored out as represented at 34 and present, at their outer ends, sockets 35 to receive the shanks 36 of the teeth 15.
The lip section 14 is assembled with the body section 13 as illustrated in the drawings so that the flange 30 interlocks with the flange 21 and the flange 29 extends, preferably, by a relatively close fit, into the space between the flange and the outer or front surface of the body section 13.
The sections 13 and 14 are secured, preferably, to each other as by means of bolts 44 WhlCh pass through the ribs 23 and the front wall 140 of the section 14. The bolts 44 prevent longitudinal displacement of the sections 13 and 14 relative to each other.
It will be noted that the flanges 20, 29, 21 and extend from one lateral edge of the upper lip section 14 to the opposite lateral edge thereof. These lateral edges are identified by the reference character 140. At the upper ends of the lateral edges 14c, lugs 14d formed integral with the upper section 14 roject into notches ower section 13. (See Figures 1 and 3.)
It will be readily understood that the improved construction possesses a high degree of strength and is relatively light in weight. It will also be understood that the im roved construction provides for the ready su stitution of a new lip section for a worn one and that, when bolts 44 are employed to secure the sections to each other, it is not necessary to remove rivets or other relatively permanent fastening devices before the lip section may be dis-assembled from the lower section 13.
While I have illustrated and described certain constructions constituting embodiments of my invention, I do not wish to be understood as intending to limit my invention thereto, as the constructions shown may be variously modified and altered and the invention embodied in other forms of structure without departing from the spirit of my invention.
