The present invention relates to self-erecting illustrations, and which are more particularly adapted for location between adjacent leaves of a book, folder or the like.

Broadly, our invention-is based on a novel construction and ,manipulation of said illustrations several forms of which are shown, merely by way of example, in the accompanying drawings, and constituting what is at the present time, the preferred form of our invention.

In theaccompanying drawings v1 is a perspective view of one form of se f-erecting illustration as applied to a book, with the book in open position;

but with the adjacent leaves of the bookl partially closed;

Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a modification similar to F 1g. 1;

Fig. 5 is an end view of the device of Fig. 4, with one of the adjacent leaves slightly tilted from its open position;

Fig. 6 is a perspective view of another form of our invention, disclosing a portion extending upwardly through an opening in a surrounding jacket, as well as an additional, small, accordion-pleated book disposed between adjacent leaves of the main book or folder, while Fig. 7 is a view, similar to Fig. 6, of a modification employing the same essential principle as disclosed in Fig. 6.

As shown in Fig. 1, the book or folder 1, for which the generic term book will hereinafter be employed, has adjacent leaves or wall elements 2 and 3 joined together along a longitudinal fold 4, along which is pivotall `secured in any desired manner, as by an adlsiesive strap 5, a central member 6. On either wall element 2 or 3, but as shown, on element 2, is provided, substantially centrally, a collapsible element 7, which may take any desired form. In Fi 1, for instance, the element 7 is in the simulation of the ootpost of a bed, while 'in Fig. 4, it is inthe shape of a tree. This collapsible element 7 may likewise be secured to the Wall element 2in any desired manner, as by a strap 8. Extending transversely between the central member 6 and the collapsible element 7 isa tie member 9, which as shown,

- joints 16 substantiall midway of each of its leg portions, and dlsposed transversely of said wall member 2 and secured thereto by suitable means such as straps 17, fits about the tie member 9, and prevents its rising beyond a predetermined height upon opening of the wall elements 2 and 3, thus ensuring he simulation of a neat, orderly-appearing Obviously the retaining member may assume any desired form, and Figs.- 4 and 5 show this member in the simulation of a man 15', secured to wall element 2 by a strap 17, and having a fold 16. -A suitable eye-shaped loop or the like 18 is shown asfslidably securing the tie member 9 to the retaining member 15. The operation of the device of Figs. 4 and 5 is the same as that of Figs. 1-3. v

In Figs. 6 and 7 are shown certain other features of oui` invention.

At 19 in Fig. 6 and 19 in Fi 7 are shown partly collapsible figures, co lapsible to a certain extent in a vertical direction when the wall elements 2 and 3 are extended, and extensible alon a direction transversely of the principa axisv of the book when the wall elements are folded. In suitable manner, as at 20, 20 and 21, 21 in Fig. 6 and at 20', 20 in Fi 7, the figures are pivotailly secured to t e corresponding wall elements, and are provided respectively with slots or apertures 22, and 22', through which slide fixed members 23 and 23', secured to. the wall elementss2 and 3 along the fold 4 by means such as straps,`

Onthe outer faces 28, 29, 30, and 31 may be inscribed suitable material, such as 'pictures, rhyines, and the like.

In use, it 1s possible to impart a pleasing appearance of motionA to ,fthe figures when the wall elements are opened, by gently,` and slightly moving the wall elements to and -fro from their completely extended pof sition, figures.

.It is obvious that once our invention is disclosed, numerous modifications and adaptations will readil occur .to those skilled in the art. Accordingly, it is intended that our invention be limited only by the vscope of the appended claims.

We claim: f 1. An upstanding display device, comprising two wall elements folded lalong their longitudinal center, and collapsible on each other, a central member pivoted at said fold, a collapsible member 'securing said central member to one of said wall elements, a collapsible element pivotally secured to the other of said wall elements substantially parallel to saidI central element, a tie mem-- er pivoted to both said central member and said collapsible element, and a retaining member pivotedsto said last-mentioned wall element and contacting with said tie member in such manner as to limit the upward movement thereofv from the surface ofthe wall element, when the wall elemen are unfolded into extended position.

An upstanding display device, comlrising two wall elements folded along their ongitudinal center, and collapsible on each other, a central member pivoted at said fold, a collapsible member securing saidcentral'member to one of said wall elements, a collapsible element pivotally secured to thereby increasing the interest in the` L ments when the latter are unfolded into extended position.
