Application filed May 28,
The present invention relates to hinges; and its objectis, generally, to prov1dea hinge improved in respects hereinaftenappearing; and more particularly, to provlde a hinge whose hinge members may be readily connected in swingable relation; and further,
to provide a hinge having improved bearings; andfurther, toprovide a huge made partially of sheet metal bent to" required shape; and further, to provide a hinge WlIICh may be very economically made and neverained by, 'and the vention finds preferable embodiment in, the
hinge particularly described in the body of this specification and'illustrated bythe accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a front el'evational view of a hinge connecting a door closure and a door jamb,fragments of which are shown;
Figure 2 is a bottom plan view, of said hinge, the door closure and jamb being shown in section taken on line 2 2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view of a portion of the hinge, other portions thereof being shown in section taken on the same line 2-2; Figure 4 is a sectional view ofthe hinge taken on line 44 of Figure 1; and
Figure ,5 is an inner side viewoi the hinge. In this drawing is illustrated a hinge,
adapted for useon refrigerators and the like,
, comprising a hinge member 1 having ahead portion 2 of globular form and a shank portion 4 adapted to be thrust into a bore 5 in the body of the refrigerator or the j amb 6 of its door opening and being internally threaded for receiving a mounting screw bolt 7. A
pintle 8 is seated in a bore9 in saidhead and its end portions 10 extend outwardly from said head2. The hinge comprises also the other hingemember 11 madeof sheet metal and having a flat portion extending at 12 parallelly with the face of the door closure 13,
then Iinclinedlyinwardly at 14, and then parallelly with said face at 15 where it is mounted on the closures inner side as by screws 16.,
This second hinge member 11 also has spaced hollow extensions 17 embracing the head 2 between them and covering and conceallng from View said end portions 10 of the 1951. sesame; 540,601;
pintlei erhese 116110;} ektiisiens "17 is shown conical in shape, theirmutually adjacentedges 18-being the bases of such cones turnably bearing on the opposite sides 3 of; the globular head portion 2; of the hinge member 1. i
Tongues 19 project from extensions 17, and are bent under said end members together in turnable relation. It-
the ends these portions 10 of the pintle to connect the hinge M will be seen that an economically constructed hinge is thus provided, in which the hinge members are readily connected, the pintle is concealed from View, an ornamental appearance is presented, and in which dirt-collecting parts are eliminated to a marked degree, thus assuring a sanitary fixture so desirable in refrlgerators and food contamers.
It will also be seen that the edges 18 of the conical extensions 17, bearingon the globular head portion2 of hinge member 1 in a circular path around the pintle 8 and out wardly spaced therefrom,provides a braced constructionjwhereby the hinge member 11, is held securely against tilting from the axis of the pintle, so that the connection of the hingemembers 1 and 11 by the tongues 19 a or the like need not be so strong as if said bearings of the edges 18 on the globular head ,8
2 were absent. i
The invention being intended to be pointed out in the claims, is not tovbe limited to or by details ofconstruction of the particular embodimentthereof illustrated by the drawing or hereinbefore described.
, Iclaim; 1. In ahinge: a hinge member having a globular head provided with a pintle whose end portions extend outwardly from its 0pposite sides, and a shank adapted tobe in serted into a bore in a door jamb for mounting said member thereon; a second hinge member made of sheet metal having a flat portion adapted tovbe mounted on a door closure, and spaced hollow extensions embracing the head of the first-mentioned hinge member and covering the pintles end portions, said extensions having tongues bent under said end portions respectivelyto connect the hinge members together turnably.
2. In a hinge: a hinge member having a globular head provided With a pintle Whose end portions extend outwardly from its op-,
posite sides; a second hinge member having spaced hollow tubular extensions embracing the globular head and covering the pintles end portions, the mutually adjacent edges of the tubular extensions turnably bearing spacedly from the pintle on the opposite sides of-the globular head, said extensions having other bearings inside the same receiving the ends of the pintle.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand at Grand Rapids, Michigan, this th day of May, 1931. -GQRDON E; ROEDDING.
