N. PETERS, PHOTO-UTHOGRP UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREW F. BARRY AND IRA G. LANE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHlMNEY-COWLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 191,297, dated May 29, 1877; application filed May 5. 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, ANDREW F. BARRY and IRA G. LANE, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Chimney Ventilator and Cowl, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a side elevation, with a part broken away to show the construction more clearly; and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on line 00 m, Fig. 1.
The object of our invention is to furnish a chimney cowl or ventilator which will deflect the natural current of air, so that a draft is continually maintained.
In the drawing, A is a sheet-metal chimneytop, to the upper end of which is attached a strip of metal, B, bent into a spiral form, and having spaces between the successive convolutions of the spiral. The spirals overlap each other, and increase in diameter toward the top.
The coils are connected at intervals by stays a, and the end of the upper and outer coil is tapped onto the one that precedes it,
cheaply and easily made, and does not obstruct the chimney.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A chimney cowl or ventilator, consisting of the strip B, bent into a spiral form, and having spaces between the successive convolutions 0f the spiral, substantially as shown and described.
ANDREW F. BARRY. IRA G. LANE.
