As so assembled and connected to the upper end of the screen 1, 10 said screen packer and setting tool may be let down into the well by means of the string 13 until the lower end of the screen rests on the bottom of the well. Thereupon the string 13-may be turned to carry the keyways 16 into alignment with the keys 21 and the string and coupling It then further lowered and the lower end of said coupling will land upon the seat 12 of the setting nipple 11 forcing said setting nipple downwardly and expanding the packer 4 into close contact with the surrounding casing 22. The-packer will be maintained in said expanded position by the dog 9 whose teeth will engage the teeth 3 to prevent the collapsing of the packer. It desired the coupling 6 may have alsothe flexible upstanding arms 23 whose inner surfaces are toothed to engage the ratchet teeth 3 and to form additional means for holding the packer expanded.
In the form shown in Figures 5 to 8 inclusive there is the enlarged coupling 14 connected to the lower end of the string 13 whose lower end is reduced in diameter and provided with the tapering internalthreads 24; and the vertical key ways 25 leading from said threads down to the lower end of said coupling 14. In this form there is a connecting nipple 17 whose upper end is flared and provided with the external threads 26 which may be screwed into the threads 24:. The lower end of this nipple is screwed into the upper end of the packer support 2 by left hand threads and said nipple 17 has the vertical keys 21 thereon. In other respects this form of setting tool is similar to that shown in Figures 1 to 4 inclusive. In assembly the nipple 17' is screwed into the packer support 2 and the threads 2%, 26 connected and the entire apparatus with the screen attached, then lowered into the well until the screen lands on the bottom of. the bore. Thereupon the operating string 13 is turned to the right to unscrew the threads 24 from the threads 28 and the coupling 14 is then lowered and turned to align the key- 7 ways 25 with the keys 21 and then lowered to land on the settingnipple 11 which is moved downwardly to expand the packing at as hereinabove explained and said packer is maintained in an expanded position by p the means hereinbefore described.
hen the packer has been set the setting tool of either form may be released for withdrawal by a further rotation of the opcrating string 13 to the right whereupon the left hand threads 18 will be disconnected from the packer support and the operating string and setting tool then withdrawn. It is to be noted that While the threads 18 are being unscrewed they will sustain only the weight of the connecting nipple 17 or 17, and not the weight of the entire operating string 13 and consequently said threads will sustain very little wear and will not be liable to be injured and therein one of the chief advantages of this type of setting tool resides.

tation of the coupling to permit'said coupling to descend and means arranged to clutch the coupling with said nipple upon the descent of the former, whereby said nipple may be turned with. the coupling and,
unscrewed from said support.

A packer setting tool comprising a coupling whose upper end is adapted to be connected to an operating string, a connecting nipple whose upper end is telescopically re-, lated to said coupling and whose lower end has left hand threads for connection to a packer support, means for connecting said coupling to said nipple said means being releasable upon the turning of said couplingv member relative to said nipple whereby the coupling may descend and means for interconnecting the couplingand nipple for simultaneous rotation, upon such descent, whereby said nipple may be unscrewed'from said support.
