This invention relates to brake shoes and it has for its object to provide a novel attaching lug which can be easily made and united with the back of the shoe. 7

I have illustrated the invention in the accompanying drawing in a shoe of the composition type wherein the body is provided with a back in the form of a shell and my improved lug is united therewith by spotwelding, and referring thereto Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the shoe.

Referring to the drawing, 4. is the body, 5 is the back and 6 is the attaching lug. In the type of shoe selected for illustration the body is made of suitable composition and the back 5 is made in the form of a shell which is secured on the body. The form, size and material of the body and back are not essential to my invention except as the body and back are securely united and the back provides a bearing for the lug to which it may be solidly and rigidly secured. The lug is made of sheet metal bent into tubular form, preferably rectangular in cross section, and it is arranged transversely of the back midway between the ends of the shoe in the position required for an attaching lug. I prefer to bend the metal plate from which the lug is formed to provide a bottom 7, an adjacent side 8, a top 9 and a side 10 parallel with the side 8.

r The lower marginal edge of the side 10, which is one free marginal edge of the plate, is arranged to abut the back 5 and lie against the other free edge 12of the plate, which is one edge of the bottom 7 of the lug. The marginal edge 11 may be welded or otherwise secured to the bottom 7 of the lug or to the back 5 but I believe it will be entirely satisfactory to leave this edge free since it does not seem to be necessary to secure it rigidly in place except as it abuts the back and lies against the edge 12. The sides have registered openings 13 to receive the key for fastening the shoe to a head. The bottom 7 of the lug is secured to the back -5 by spotwelds 14 or by any other suitable means.

lug of strong and substantial construction which can be easily made and united with the back of a shoe and perform the function required of such a lug. While the invention is shown in connection with a composition shoe having a shell back, for which it is well adapted, the invention may be embodied in other types of shoes for which it is or may be adapted; and I reserve the right to make any changes in the form, construction and arthat may be necessary or desirable to adapt the invention for different types of shoes within the scope of the following claim.

I claim:

In a brake shoe comprising a body and a back, the combination of an attachin lug formed of a sheet metal plate bent into tubular form and extending transversely of the shoe, said lug being fastened to said back and having a bottom, a top and two sides with one marginal edge of the plate, being the lower marginal edge of one side, abutting said back and overlying the other edge of the plate, being one edge ofthe bottom of the lug.
