Patented May 3G, 1933 UNITED STATES PATENT ortica CHARLES F. IRISH, OF BRATENAHL, OHIO CHOOK Original application filed August 20, 1927, Serial No. 214,416. Divided and this application iled June 18,
1930. Serial No. 462,000.
This invention relates to a chock intended especially for use in connection with the tree moving device illustrated and described in my copending application Serial No. 214,-
416, iilcd August 20, 1927 of which this is a division. The object of the invention is to provide an improved device of this nature adapted particularly for this use and with this object in view the invention resides in m the details of construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter described and claimed.
1n moving trees which have a considerable amount of earth carried by the roots thereof, it is desirable that the wheels of the de- 15 vice upon which it is being loaded should be allowed to move in one direction to a limited degree while having its movement in the opposite direction limited by means able to withstand a large force. To this end, I 2o provide a chock consisting of a base having ground gripping lmembers on the lower side, a single block rigidly secured to the upper surface and a flexible member for lashing the block to the wheel at a point spaced from the point of contact of the wheel with the chock on the opposite side thereof from the rigid block, the lashing member being of suiiicient length to encircle the felly of the wheel at a point above the 3o upper surface of the base.
In the drawing Fig. 1 is a side elevation of my improved chock showing the same in position of use; Fig. 2 is a` plan view of the device shown in Fig. 1 and Fig. 3 is a section en line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
In the embodiment of my invention disclosed and illustrated, the numeral l represents a heavy rigid board or a metallic beam upon which the wheel 11 is adapted to rest and which is provided with a beveled end portion a to facilitate the rolling of such wheel into the position shown herein. Attached to the rear end portion of the member 10 are a plurality of transverse ground gripping angle members 12 secured thereto in any suitable manner as, for example, by screws or bolts 13. Near the front end a strap 14 is secured across the beam 10 and secured thereto as by screws 15. At each 50 end of the strap 14 the same is bent upwardly and provided with an opening 14n which is adapted to receive a chain portion 16.
One ofthe-chain portions is provided with a hook 16,a adapted to be received' in one ofL the links ofthe other portion for attachment around the felly of the wheel 11to constrain rotation of the same.A Intermediate theY members 12 and 14 l attach to the bea-m 10 a pairv ofhooks 17 by any suitable means 18. A triangular block 19 is provided with al pair of slots 2O spaced so as to receive the hooks of the members 17. Extending across the triangular block 19 and countersunk to be flush with the surface thereof isa strap 2 1 secured to the block 19 by means of .bolts 22 extending through said strap 21. The, bolt heads may be countersunk in the block as shown at 23.
y From the foregoingit will be evident that I have provided a simple and sturdy chock` mechanism Well yadapted for its intendedv purpose.v The block 19 is easily removable for convenience in transportation and the members 12 and 14 may likewise be removed if suitable bolts or screws are employed. The 75 angle members 12 may haveany suitable dimensions and the portion of the beam 10 eX- tending beyond the block 19 may be of any length required togive proper `chocking so long assuch length is consistent with the strength of the beam. Y
Havingl thus described my invention, Awhat Iclaimis: f i
1. A blocking device for the wheel offV a tree mover, the said device consisting of a base having transversely Aextending angle members secured to the underside thereof to be embeddedin the ground, a block on said base, and means spaced from said-block for lashing one portion of a wheel to said base with the other portion in engagement with said block. y
2. A blocking device for the wheels of a tree mover, the said device consisting of a base having means projecting downwardly e5 therefrom tov be embedded inthe ground, a chocking block havingvupwardly extending recesses in the bottom thereof, hooks carried by the said base and entering the said recesses andeach engaging a portion of the l3.00
said block, and means spaced from the said block for securing a portion of a wheel to the said base with another portion of the said wheel in engagement with the said block.
3. A tree blocking device having a base having anchoring means carried thereb upwardly extending hooks sec-ured to eac side of the said base, a chocking block having in the base thereof a strap and having upwardly extending recesses in the bottom for the reception of said hooks whereby the hooks may engage said strap, means securing the said strap to the said block, a metal strap spaced from the block and secured beneath the said base and having upwardly extending lianges, and. chains secured to said ianges for securing a wheel to said base.
4. A tree blocking device having a base having anchoring means carried thereby, up-
` wardly extending Vhooks secured to each side ofthe said base, a chocking block having in the base thereof a strap and having upwardly extending recesses in the bottom for the Y reception of said hooks wherebythe hooks ma enO'a e said stra means securinU the said strap to the said block, and means spaced from said block for securing a wheel to said base.
5. A blocking device for lthe wheel of a tree mover, the said device consisting of a base having transversely extending angle members secured to the underside thereof to be embedded in the ground, a block on said base, and means spaced from said block for lashing one portion of a wheel to said base with the other portion in engagement with said block, said angle irons extending laterally beyond the edges of said base.
A 6. A chock including an elongated, rigid base, a single wheel engaging block secured on the upper surface of said base intermediate the ends thereof, ground gripping means secured on the lower surface of said base and spaced a considerable distance from 5 said block, and means secured to said base and spaced from said block on the side thereof opposite said ground gripping means, and means for lashing one portion of a wheel to .y said base while another portion thereof is in engagement with said block, said lashing means being somewhat elongated 'whereby to allow the portion of the wheel to which it is secured to'assume a position above the surface of said base.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto aix my` signature.
