The invention relates to improvements in containers, and more particularly display boxes or packages of a type that the goods packed therein may be adequately displayed through a transparent dustproof covering.

According to the preferred embodiment of the invention, the box comprises two separate paper or card board parts, one an inner colla sible tray and the other an outer band mem r adapted to fit snugly around the tray. In assembling the package the inner member is first filled with the material or articles to be packaged, then a sheet of cellophane or other transparent material is laid over the open top of the tray, the outer band is slid into place, and the package is complete, the outer band serving to hold the cellophane sheet in position and serving also to reinforce the inner tray.
The principal object of the invention is to produce an improved display box combining the features of simplicity and cheapness of manufacture, convenience and adaptability for shipment, assembly and packing, attractiveness of the finished package, and suitability for the display of the contents.
The invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings setting forth an illustrative embodiment thereof.

eferring to the preferred embodiment of the invention, the complete display package comprises three separate parts, namely, an inner collapsible tray generally designated by the reference character A, a transparent sheet B of cellophane or other suitable material adapted to cover the open or partially open top of the tray to keep the contents thereof fresh and to protect the same from dust, and an outer band member 0, whichrin the assembled package surrounds the inner tray and holds the transparent sheet in position. Each of the three parts may be separately shipped flat, the inner tray and the outer band being of knockdown or collapsible construction. However, when the parts are assembled, each serves to reinforce the other, thus providing a container safe for shipping purposes. narily the package as a whole is wrapped with a suitable covering, not shown, adapted to withstand the rough handling incident to shipping. The top of the inner trayv is at least partially open, permitting adequate display of the contents. In some instances the top may be entirely open, the cello hane sheet and reinforcing band being su cient to hold the package in rigid position. In other instances the top is partially closed .by cover portions which may be formed integral with thesides of the collapsible tray. These cover portions may serve to further reinforce the package.
The blank from which the inner collapsible tray is formed according to a preferred embodiment of the inventlon is shown in Fig. 5, and the tray in collapsed form is shown in Fig. 4. Referring particularly to these figures, the reference numeral 10 denotes the portion of the blank from which the bottom of the box is formed. End mem- Ordibers 11 and 12 are hingedly connected there to, being separated by score lines 13 and 14.
The side members are indicated at 15 and 16, score lines .17 and 18 separating the sides from the bottom.
The side member 15, as shown, is provided with two end flaps 19 and 20, the length of which is referably substantially one half the width of the ends 11 and 12. If desired, the flaps may be less than one-half the width of the end members, but preferably should not be greater than one-half. The end flaps 19 and 20 are connected to the sides by means of score lines 21 and 22, and are separated from the ends 11 and'12. The side member 16 is likewise provided with end flaps 23 and 24 connected thereto by score lines 25 and 26, the flaps 23 and 24 preferably cor responding in size and positlon to the flaps 19 and 20.
Although not necessary according to certain embodiments of the invention, according to the construction herein illustrated, the sides 15 and 16 have connected thereto by score lines 28 and 30 respectivel partial closure members 27 and 29. As 3 own, the
The blank having been formed, the box may be assembled on the conventional box gluing machines, and may be shippsd, after assembly, in knock-down condition. To assemble the box, the ends 11 and 12 and sides 15 and 16 are folded up and the tabs 19, 20 and 23, 24 are folded inwardly and glued in position to the ends 11 and 12, as indicated 1n Figs. 1 and 4. For shipping flat, the glued box is collapsed, being folded along lines 13 and 14 and diagonal lines 35, 36, 37 and 38, the form of the collapsed box being illustrated in Fig. 4. It will be noted that the ends 11 and 12 are folded inwardly,
while portions of the sides and closure members are folded outwardly alon the lines 17 and 18, the remainder of the si es and end members being folded inwardly upon themselves along the diagonal score lines.
When the tra arrives at its destination it is again forme into a box by folding up the sides and ends, whereupon suitable filling material is placed within the box. It will be noted that the filling material itself tends to press against the ends of the tray, thereby holding the same against collapsing along the diagonal lines. After filling, the partial closure members 27 and 29 are folded over and the tab 32 is inserted in a slot 34 which is formed in the juncture line 30 connecting the flap 29 to the side 16. The

According to the preferred embodiment of the invention, however, the tray having been filled and the artial closure applied as described above, t e transparent sheet or cover B of cellophane or other suitable material is placed over the top, the edges thereof preferably extending be 0nd the borders of the top of the tray. T e outer band C is now applied, serving to hold the cellophane .cover in place and acting further as a reinforcement for the inner tray. As shown in Fig. 8, the outer band comprises a rectangular member scored at its four corners 41, 42, 43 and 44. The ends of the band may be suitably secured together as by gluing at 45. Obviously the bands may be collapsed similarly to the tray and shipped flat.
When the package is complete, the contents of the box are constantly visible through large triangular transparent spaces 39 and 40. According to the broadest aspects of the invention the top may be entirely open, but according to the preferred embodiment, partial closures are employed which serve to strengthen the package and at the same time leave large portions of the contents visible.
The details of the package may be varied if desired within the scope of the invention. The advantages of the device are many, one beinglthat the goods packed in a container of t 's type may be adequately displayed without opening the package. Other advantagesare that the box may be shipped in knock-down condition, and that the tray may be made on the conventional box gluing machines without alterations. The contamer may be readily set u and securely sealed in practically air-tlght condition without the use of staples or glue, so that the packer needs no equi ment whatever to pack goods in this type 0 container. While, as described, the end extension flaps 19, 20, 23 and 24 are glued to the ends 11 and 12, it is not essential that they be so secured, as the outer band C serves to reinforce the package and hold it securely in assembled position.
While in the above described embodiment of the invention the partial closure flaps are described as connected to the side walls, and the diagonal lines for collapsing the box are likewise formed in the side walls, it is obvious that a similar arrangement might be employed in connection with the end walls, and in the accompanying claims it is to be understood that the terms side and en walls may be interchanged without depvalll'tin from the spirit of the invention. at claim is:
1. A blank for forming a container, com prising a rectangular portion from which the bottom of the container is to be formed, end'and side wallportions connected along flexible lines to the said bottom portion, extension flaps hingedly connected to the ends of the side walls, and adapted to be glued to-the end walls in the assembled box, partial closure flaps hingedly connected to the side walls along lines parallel to the lines connecting the sides to the bottom, the partial closure flaps being adapted to meet in the assembled box, but having cut-away portions whereby 'a part of the contents of the finished container will be exposed.
2. A blank for forming a container, com prising a rectangular portion from which the bottom of the container is to be formed, end and side wall portions connected along flexible lines to the said bottom portion, extension flaps hingedly connected to the ends of the side walls, and adapted to be glued to the end walls in the assembled box, partial closure flaps hingedly connected to the side walls along lines parallel to the lines connecting the sides to the bottom, the partial closure flaps being adapted to meetin the assembled box, but having cut-away portions whereby a part of the contents of the finished container will be exposed, a flap forming an extension of one of the partial closure flaps and having asecuring tab hingedly connected thereto, and a slot formed at the junctureline between the o posite closure flap and the corresponding si e wall, which slot is adapted to receive said securing tab when the container is set up and closed.
3. A blank for forming a container, comprising a rectangular portion from which the bottom of the container is to be formed, end and side wall portions connected along flexible lines to the said bottom portion, extension flaps hingedly connected to the ends of the side walls, and adapted to be glued to the end walls in the assembled box, partial closure flaps hingedly connected to the side walls along lines parallel to the lines connecting the sides to the bottom, the partial closure flaps being adapted to meet in the assembled box, but having cut-away portions whereby a part of the contents of the finished container will be exposed, and flexible lines extending diagonally inward from the ends of the lines of juncture between the bottom and side walls, across said side walls and partial closure flaps, providing means whereby the container may be collapsed after the side extension flaps have been glued in place.

7. A display container ada ted to be formed from a sin 10 blank 0? sheet material comprising a fiottom portion carrying side and end walls, closure flaps on the edges of said side walls, said closure flaps being adapted to meet when folded inwardly, in the assembled container, to lie at substantially right angles to their respective side walls, portions of said closure flaps being cut away whereby apart of the contents of the container will be exposed, a locking flap forming an extension on one of said closure flaps, and a slot formed at the juncture of said other closure flap and its respective side wall, said slot being adapted to receive said locking flap to thereby secure said container in set up position.
8. A display container ada ted to be formed from a single blank 0 sheet material, comprising a bottom portion carrying side and end walls, closure flaps on the edges of said side walls, said closure flaps being adapted to meet when folded inwardly, in the assembled container, to lie at substantially right angles to their respective side walls, said closure flaps being partially cut away whereby a part of the contents of the container will be exposed, a trans arent sheet adapted to overlie the partially open top of said container, and means for frictionally holding said sheet securely in e container, leaving triangulace, said means comprising a collapsible and of substantially the same height as said walls and adapted to surround said cond 0111 in h 7 a igne at 'cago inois t is th ay of November, 1930.
