Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. [19 1,] 82, dated May 22, 1877; application filed October 26, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD M. SAMMIS, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Camp-Stools, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings.

Thisinvention pertains to the class ofdevices known ascamp-stools; and theimprovement consists in forming the seat of wood, made in two or more parts, and so connecting them with each other and with the legs that they may be easily folded together or opened, as desired, and as will hereinafter appear.

Figure 1 represents a transverse section of the seat, with the legs in elevation. Fig. 2 is the same, with a modification of the hinges; and Fig. 3 is a plan of the under side of the seat.

At A and A are shown the two parts of the seat, mounted upon the legs B and B, and at O is shown a hinge for attaching the two parts together, two of said hinges being shown at Fig. 3.

These hinges are preferably made in the form of strap-hinges, and are fastened transversely upon the two parts A and A of the seat. and with the hinge-pivot directly under the joint, so that the two parts may be folded together by being raised up in the center.

The seat thus united is thus fastened upon the cross-round on the top oi the legs B and B by a strap surrounding the round, as at D, and which may be a portion of the strap forming the hinge O, or a separate strap; or it may be simply'a wire staple, as shown at E, Figs. 2 and 3, which extends around the round at the top of the legs, and is then fastened to the seat, and which thereby fastens the members of the seat to the legs, and at the same time permits them to be folded toordinary manner, or may be varied to suit the convenience or taste of manufacturers.

To prevent the joint from pinching a person when resting upon the seat, the edges are beveled on the upper side, and thereby gives an open space, which will notclose to make a tight joint on the top, and will thereby prevent any pinching action.

The entire surface of the seat may also be ornament-ed by cutting grooves at intervals on its face, like the one at the joint, and thereby form a series of ribs, if desired.

Other modifications may also be made without departing from the nature of my invention.

I claim 1. The combination of the two parts A A, hinged together as described, of the loops attached to said parts, and the legs B B, connected with the loops, the whole arranged as and for the objects hereinbefore set forth.

2. The hinges (J, with loop D, in combination with the seat and legs of a camp-stool, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.

3. The grooves on the under side of the seat A and A, in combination with the loop D or staple E, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
