INVENTORJ BY I 2 AiTORNEY Patented May 31), 1933 srras when aerate-r crews i REUBEN EGKSTEIN, OF BRONX, AND POLTS, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK V ELECTRICAL OUTLET SOCKET Application filed June 19,
This invention relates to electric outlet sockets. More particularly this invention relates to the type of socket used in stringing a line of depending electric lamps across spaced supports for outdoor decoration, illumination and the like purposes.
Among the objects of this invention is to provide a device of the character and for the purpose described which shall be positively waterproof and rugged in construc tion, and yet be neat and compact, comprise few and simple parts, comparatively cheap to manufacture and easy to assemble, and practical and eflicient to a high degree.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims I Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of an embodiment of the inventionwith a lamp se- 7 cured in place;
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional elevational view thereof showing a lamp secured in the socket;
Fig. 3 is a. bottom plan view of the insulating body with the current carrying parts removed; 9
Fig. 4 is a plan view of a detail; Fig. 5 is across-sectional view taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 6 is a top plan view of the insulating housing.
Referring in detail to the drawing, 10 designates an electrical outlet socket embodying the invention which is here seen to comprise a housing 11 for a screw threaded shell 12 adapted to receive the base 13 of a lamp 1 1 for connecting said lamp in parallel across conductors 15, 16 connected to a suitable electrical power circuit.
1928. Serial No. 2861520.
The housing 11 is preferably made of a molded insulating material such as po-rcelain, or pheno-condensate products, and is formed with a cylindrical body portion 17 having a top wall 18 and anoutwardly flare ing flange portion 19 at the bottom, open end thereof. Spaced longitudinal, parallel, riblike hollow projections 20 may be provided on the housing 11 forming channel like spaces 20a on the interior of the housing for receiving the conductors 1 5, 16.
The shell 12 may be flared outwardly slightly at the bottom thereof as at 22 to abut the inner surface 23 of flange portion 19. An insulating disc24l issecured to the top portion of said shell, and carries a central contact 25 for contacting the central contact of the lamp base 13, in the manner well known in the art. The conductors 15 are connected as at 15a to saidcentral contact 25, while conduc-torsl6 are connected as at 16a to the shell 12 by soldering, or inany other suitable manner. Thus the lamp 14, when secured in the socket is connected in parallel across the electrical power circuit;
It will be noted that the housing 11 comprises walls of substantially uniform thickness throughout. However, the inner sur face 23 of flange 19 is recessed at the lower ends of channel spaces 20a, as shown by the tapering cross-sectionsat 26, to permit the conductors 15, 16 to extend into said channel spaces.
For sealing the space between the lamp base 13 and the flange 19 at the bottom end of the housing 11 against rain, snow or other moisture, washer 30 is preferably provided having anlopening 31 for snugly receiving the lower end 32 of the lamp base 13. Said washer is further provided with four equally spaced notches 33' adjacent the outer periphery thereof for permitting passage of the four conductor Wires 15, 16 extending into the housing. The washer 30 is preferably made of Bakelite or other suitable waterproof material.
It will be noted that the Washer 30 rests on the portion of the bulb 14a of lamp 14 adjacent the base 13. Screwing said lamp into the shell will cause the bulb 14a to press against the washer 30 which in turn presses against the bottom portion of flange l9 and against the conductor wires 15, 16. A snug, waterproof fit between the lamp and socket is thus obtained.
The socket made in accordance with the invention can be very readily and easily assembled. The conductor wires are first soldered to the shell 12 and central contact 25, and then the wires and socket inserted into the insulating body thru the flared open end with the conductors resting in the channels a. This enables a very quick and easy assembly with the insulating body completely closed for weatherproof purposes, except at the open end wherethrough the socket is inserted and where the water-tight seal is effected by means of the disc in such manner as to permit the wires to extend from "ter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described our lnvention, we
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. 6. In combination, a molded insulating body having anopen end portion, the inner surface of said end portion having spaced recesses, a socket shell secured within said body, a lamp having a base secured insaid shell, a washer member having notches in the outer periphery thereof registering with said recesses, conductor wires secured to said shell and extending into said body, each wire being received in a recess and corresponding notch, said washer member having a portion resting on a portion of the lamp adjacent the base thereof and held against said wires and body upon securing said lamp to said body.
7. A weatherproof electrical socket of the character described comprising a molded hollow insulating body having an open end and being otherwise completely closed, a socket shell comprising two electrical terminals insulated from one another and having conductor wires connected thereto, said socket shell and wires being inserted into said body thru said open end and held therein with the conductor wires extending from said open end.
8. A weatherproof electrical socket of the character described comprising a molded hollow insulating body having an outwardly flared open end and being otherwise completely closed, a socket shell comprising two electrical terminals insulated from one another and having conductor wires connected thereto, said socket shell and wires being inserted into said body thru said open end and held therein with the conductor wires extending from said open end.
