This invention relates to paper articles, or articles made from other sheet material, and the devices for forming them and delivering them to the user. Generally stated, the object of the invention is-to provide a novel and improved form of toilet seat cover, of paper or other sheet material, and a device for forming and delivering the covers to the user.
It is also an object to provide certain details and features of construction tending to increase the general eficiency and desirability of a device of this particular character.
To these and other useful ends the invention consists in matters hereinafter set forth and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings in which- Fig. l is a front elevation of a delivering machine or device, for delivering paper seat covers to the users, embodying the principles of the invention, with certain portions shown in section, being a section on line 1-1 in Fig. 2.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section on line 22 in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a detail section on line 33 in Fig. 1.
Fig. 1 is a view of the paper seat cover as it leaves the machine in folded condition.
Fig. 5 is a section on line 55 in Fig. 1.
Fig. 6 shows the seat cover unfolded.
Fig. 7 shows the squares of paper cut off the cover by the mechanism in the machine.
As thus illustrated, the invention comprises a roll of paper, folded or doubled upon itself, so that a double thickness leaves the roll. The two rolls 2 and 3 are geared together by the gears 4, and a handle 5 is provided for rotating the roll 2 and thereby pulling the double thickness of paper down between the two feed rolls.
The roll 2 has cutters 6 that form the lines of perforations 7 in the paper. This roll also has the cutter 8 that cuts the line 9 in the paper. The cutter 10 cuts the lines 11 in the paper. (See Figs. 2 and 6.)
The roll 3 has the dies 12 to receive the cutters 6, and is also formed with a slot to receive the cutter 10 of the other roll. 7
Both rolls are grooved circumferentially at 13 to provide spaces for the vertical guide posts 14 that guide the paper through the bottom of the housing 15 that encloses he mechanism. These guides also act as strippers to relieve the paper from the cutters.
The cover 16 can be raised to remove the roll 1 and replenish the paper. Spring pressed pivoted devices 17 bear against the spindles of the roll to provide retarding means, so that the paper leaves the roll under pulling tension.
The middle portion of the seat cover, between the lines 11, can be torn out easily to form the finished cover. The auxiliary squares 18 form ordinary toilet paper. In this way the seat cover and the toilet paper are made in the machine from plain paper as it unrolls from the supply. The seat covers come out folded, and the squares come out in two layers.
Of course, one of the cutters 6 extends the full length of the roll to form the tear line 19 along which the seat cover is torn off. 7
The machine may be operable free, or it may be coin controlled (by any known or approved means), but the invention is not limited to any particular means for controlling the operation thereof.
The forming of the paper article, of any suitable character, between the feed rolls, makes it possible to supply the articles from plain paper stock, in the manner shown. The invention, however, is not limited, so far as machinery is concerned, to any particular paper articles. But the machinery is well adapted to make and deliver the particular articles shown and described, severed, either entirely or partially, from the roll of paper.
Nor is the invention limited to the use of paper, for any suitable sheet material may be employed, as circumstances may require.
The cutting or perforating, of course, as shown, may be of such character that the article will remain slightly attached to the stock of paper, or other material, so that it can be easily torn off, but will not fall down when moved out of the machine. In any event, the material is cut between the articles, so that the articles are either partially or entirely severed from the material, by the action of the rolls.
\Vhat we claim as our invention is:
1. A machine for making and delivering toilet seat covers, comprising a knife roller and a slot roller which have a curved knife and slot to form the cover, formed to cut a curved slit in a folded sheet, so that two entirely separate slits are formed when the sheet is unfolded, a straight knife and slot to cut-off or sever the cover, knives and slots to form paper squares at one margin of the folded cover, and a knife and slot to sever the two-thickness squares from the folded cover.
2. A structure as specified in claim 1, said rolls being adapted to form the squares in double thickness in a series at one side edge of the series of folded covers.
3. A machine for making and delivering paper articles, or articles made from other sheet material, by cutting through two integrally connected layers of sheet material folded upon each other, comprising rolls for feeding the material, having cutting or perforating means thereon to form the article on the material, said means comprising a cutter on one roll and a co-acting slot on another roll, severing means on the rolls for cutting the material between the articles, and means for operating said rolls, said out ter and slot being curved and arranged on the rolls to cut a curved slit through both layers, with both ends of the slit spaced from the folded edge of the sheet material, whereby when the sheet is unfolded two entirely separate complementary slits are formed with a removable portion between them, having guides for guiding the folded article from the rolls, serving as strippers to release the material from said cutting or perforating means.
4. A structure as specified in claim 1, said rolls having annular grooves near their ends, and stationary guide posts in said grooves.
5. A structure as specified in claim 1, said rolls being disposed with their axes in the same horizontal plane, and means to feed the sheet material downward between said rolls.
6. A structure as specified in claim 1, op-
erative and formed to make six squares for each cover, three at each side thereof.
7. A structure as specified in claim 1, said rolls being geared together to rotate at the same speed, and means to rotate said rolls.
8. A machine for making and delivering paper articles, or articles made from other sheet material, by cutting through two integrally connected layers of sheet material folded upon each other, comprising rolls for feeding the material, having cutting or perforating means thereon to form the article on the material, said means comprising a cutter on one roll and a co-acting slot on another roll, severing means on the rolls for cutting the material between the articles, and means for operating said rolls, said cutter and slot being curved and arranged on the rolls to cut a curved slit through both layers, with both ends of the slit spaced from the folded edge of the sheet material, whereby when the sheet is unfolded two entirely separate complementary slits are formed with a removable portion between them, having guides for guiding the folded article from the rolls, serving as strippers to release the material from said cutting or perforating means, said rolls having circumferential grooves in which said guides are disposed vertically in fixed position.
9. A machine for making and delivering paper articles, or articles made from other sheet material, by cutting through two inte rally connected layers of sheet material folded upon each other, comprising rolls for feeding the material, having cutting or perforating means thereon to form the article on the material, said means comprising a cutter on one roll and ace-acting slot on another roll, severing means on the rolls for cutting the materialbetween the articles, and means for operating said rolls, said cutter and slot being curved and arranged on the rolls to cut a curved slit through both layers, with both ends of the slit spaced from the folded edge of the sheet material, whereby when the sheet is unfolded two entirely separate complementary slits are formed with a removable portion between them, having guides for guiding the folded article from the rolls, serving as strippers to release the material from said cutting or perforating means, said guides being disposed vertically between the rolls.
10. A machine for making and delivering paper articles, or articles made from other sheet material, by cutting through two integrally connected layers of sheet material folded upon each other, comprising rolls for feeding the material, having cutting or perforating means thereon to form the article on the material, said means comprising a cutter on one roll and a (Bo-acting slot on another roll, severing means on the rolls for cutting the material between the articles, and means for operating said rolls, said cutter and slot being curved and arranged on the rolls to cut a curved slit through both layers, with both ends of the slit spaced from the folded edge of the sheet material, whereby when the sheet is unfolded two entirely separate complementary slits are formed with a removable portion between them, having guides for guiding the folded article from the rolls, serving as strippers to release the material from said cutting or perforating means, there being a sheet cutter on one roll between certain of said guides.
