May '23, 193". J. EPST COMBINED SEAL AND LABEL Filed Feb. 15, 1932 I ,F f.
iiHlL Patented May 23, 1933 UNTED STATES ldllhlz PATENT @FFQE JOSEPH EPST, F COCHECTON, NEW YORK COMBINED SEAL AND LABEL Application led February 15, 1932. Serial No. 593,096.
vlabel which will serve both for the purpose of sealing the ends of the egg or other case so that it cannot be opened without being positive y detectable, and will, at the same time, serre as a label for receiving shipping instructions as well as information concerning the contents thereof.
A further object of this invention is to provide an improved combination seal and label which may be made of-one piece having in- `tegral projecting flaps thereon, which flaps may be folded over the sides, top and bot- Jcom of an egg case or the like, so that the sides, top and bottom of the egg case cannot be thereafter opened without destroying the flap and thus indicating that the same has been opened.
Still a further object of this invention is to provide a combination seal and label which will make it impossible for the contents of an egg case to be pilfered enroute from the shipper to the addressee without leaving positive traces thereof and thus avoid the suspicion that the shipper may have failed to provide the normal full contents of the case before it was started enroute.
lilith the foregoing and other objects in view, as will hereinafter become apparent, this invention comprises the constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts, hereinafter set forth, disclosed and shown on the accompanying drawing. In this drawins,
Figure 1 is a side elevation partly broken away of an egg case to which this invention has been applied,
Figure 2 is a top plan view of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is an end view of Figure 1, and
Figure 4 is a plan view of the combination seal and label before it has been -applied to the egg case.
Ther-e is shown at a conventional egg lcase having a usual central dividing member at 11 and fastening members 12 to which are nailed the slats 13 forming the sides of the case.
This conventional egg case is usually thirteen inches high and twelve inches wide. Ordinarily, when shipping eggs in this manner it is very easy for unscrupulous employees of the express companies to pull off one G0 of the slats 13 and remove two or three dozen of the eggs from the center of the case and then replace the slat 13 so that it cannot be observed that the same has been disturbed. This causes suspicion that the original shipper of the eggs did not supply the full amount, usually thirty dozen packed in a case of this nature.
As will be observed, all the slats 13 extend to each end of the case 10 and this invention 70 provides a combination seal and label 14, which prevents the possibility of removing any of the slats 13 once the same has been used Without detection. The label and seal 14 will be preferably made in one piece, as 75 shown in Figure 4,'being substantially seventeen inches from the tcp flap 15 to the bottom flap 16, as shown in Figure 4, and fourteen inches maximum width from side flap 17 to side flap 18, while these flaps will each be substantially twelve inches in width. Each of flaps 15, 16, 17 and 18 are connected to the label body 19 by crease lines 20, 21, 22 and 23, it being obvious that crease lines 20 and 21 will be thirteen inches apart and crease 85 lines 22 and 23 will be twelves inches apart. The back of the label 14 may be provided with a gummed sticking surface, not shown, so that it may be only necessary to wet the same to apply it. When applying the label 25251115 device Will be apparent from the fore- 14 to the case 10, the body portion 19 will be placed over one end of the case 10, as shown in Figure 3, and flap 15 Will be pasted over the top of the egg case, flap 16 over the bottom edge of the egg case and flaps 17 and 18 over the opposite sides of the egg case. The label portion 19 Will have placed thereon the address of the egg shipper and of the addressee as Well as a description of the contents.
Although this invention has been applied to an egg case, it is quite obvious that the same may be applied to any type of case, such as used for shipping oranges, tomatoes or other farm products. By making use of tWo of the combination seals and labels 14, one at each end, it will be obvious that the egg case at 10 is absolutely protected against being opened Without at the same time destroying one of the flaps 15, 16, 17 or 18, and thus indicating at once that the same has been broken into after it has left the shipper and before it has reached the addressee.
The novel features and the operation of going description. Thile the device has been shown and the structure described in detail, it is obvious that this is not to be considered limited to the exact form disclosed and that changes may be made therein Within the scope of what is claimed Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus set forth and disclosed the nature of this invention, what is claimed is:
1. In combination, a container substantially rectangular in cross section laterally and longitudinally and comprising substantially rectangular end Walls and side Walls secured to said end Walls, at least one of said side Walls being removable, and a combination label and seal, said label and seal comprising a substantially rectangular label portion secured to one of said end Walls and substantially rectangular sealing flaps projecting from each edge of said label portion, said llaps being secured over the joining ends of said container side Walls.
2. In combination a container comprising end Wall means and side Wall means secured to said end Wall means, at least one of said Wall means being removable, and a combination label and seal, said label and seal comprising a main label portion secured to said end Wall means and a sealing flap projecting from an edge of said main label portion, said liap being secured over the joining' ends of said container Wall means.
8. In combination a container comprising an end Wall and a side Wall secured to said end Wall, at least one of said Walls being removable, and a combination label and seal, said label and seal comprising a main label portion secured to said end wall and a sealing flap projecting from each edge of said main JOSEPH EPST.
