UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
.KARL F. MEYER, OF AUBURN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN SLATE-FRAME ATTACHMENTS- Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 191,009, dated May 22, 1877; application filed April 2, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, KARL FRANK MEYER, of Auburn, in the county Cayuga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments to Slate- Frames'; and that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, in which a slate and its frame having my improved attachments is represented in'perspectlve.
My invention relates to slates used by schoolchildren and others in connection with slatepencils. When the slates, as heretofore constructed, are used in schools for exercises or calculations, it is customary, when recitations are to follow, to lay. the slates upon the desk or shelf in the midst of books, from which they frequently fall to the floor, make disturbing noises, and often become broken, although in many cases, to' guard against these contingencies, they are provided with elastic corners and other padding.
The object of my invention is to provide means by which the slate can be suspended under or at the side of a desk, or in any desired location, by means of a metallic eye or loop securely fastened to its frame; and it consists in forming the base-plate of the metallic loop and the loop itself of a single piece of metal, and providing said base-plate with serrations upon which a slate pencil can be sharpened down to a fine point.
In the drawings, A represents the slate, and B its frame, that can be made of any desired form and construction. 0 represents a loop or eye by which the slate is to be suspended. This loop is formed with a large base-plate, 0, so that its points of attachment to the slateframe at b can be as far apart as possible, and not weaken or have a tendency to split the frame B, to which it can be secured by screws, clinched nails, or rivets. The base-plate O is provided with serrations upon which slatepencils can be sharpened, if desired. It can be secured in the middle of either side or end of the slate-frame, preferably in a recess cut out of the frame, so as to have its face even with the top of the frame. The loop 0 and its serrated base-plate are formed out of a single piece of metal, preferably steel, to resist abramom.
I am aware that serrated-steel pencil-sharpeners of various forms, such as flat steel, V- shaped, hollow cylindrical, or conical, have been used, either independently or attached to slate-frames, for the purpose of sharpening slate-pencils, and I do not claim any of these well-known devices.
What I claim as my invention is- As a new article of manufacture, a slateframe attachment consisting of a flat serrated base-plate, 0, provided with a loop, a, the said plate and loop being made in one piece, and otherwise constructed substantially as described.
