Description

May 16, 1933. E. M. SMITH 1,909,509
SANITARY COVER 7 Filed Jui 8. 1951 l/VVE/VTO/f ELIZABETH M. SMITH.
l/E/P KITTO/P/VEX Patented May 16, 1933 ELIZABETH M. SMITH, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA SANITARY COVER Application filed July 8, 1931. Serial No. 549,462.
My invention relates to improvements in sanitary covers for drinking glasses, water itchers and similar articles used in hospitals and the like, wherein a single sheet is folded to form a cover having tabs to facilitate the removal and replacement of said cover upon a container, said cover being provided with a normally closed opening, formed by slots intersecting each other at right angles to each other, whereby a sipping tube or the like may be readily inserted and withdrawn without leaving the contents of a container over which the sanitary cover has been placed exposed to germs and'the like.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved sanitary temporary cover for containers and the hke Another object is to provide a new and 0 improved device of the character set forth which may be produced at a very low cost.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a sheet folded to produce tabs which may serve as handles to facilitate replacement and removal of said cover.
The invention consists in the device disclosed in the drawing forming a part of the present application wherein like characters of reference are used to designate similar parts throughout the specification and drawing, and in which- 1 is an elevation disclosing the first and second folds in full lines, the dotted lines beingu ed to indicate the rectangular form of the s eet before folding;
Fig. 2 is a similar view disclosing the device after the third fold;
Fig. 3 is a similar view disclosing the device or cover extended for placement upon a container or the like;
Fig. 4 is atop view of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a bottom view of Fig. 3; and
Fig. 6 is an enlarged side elevation of Fig. 3 disclosing the device applied to a water pitcher.
Referring to the drawing the numeral 1 is used to designate in general a sheet, preferably of suitable paper, having the side portions 2 thereof folded over the main or central portion and having their edges overlapping as at 3. The overlapping edges? are. secured, preferably from a point 4, approximatelymidway of the overlapping edges,'to the top- 7 thereof, leaving-the lower portion unsecured, the purpose of which will hereinafter be more: fully set forth. The upper corners 6 are next'turned down and the upper portion of the whole is then: turned-down on the line of the lower edge" 7 of the folded corners 6, as disclosed in Fig. 2 of the drawing, so that the top 80f the whole now lies upon the main body.
That entire portion of the whole lyingabovethe top 8 is now turned back at right angles tothe folded body. and the folds at the juncture of the side portions 2 and cen-,- tral portion of the sheet 1 are flattened and the side portions 2 are. separated vfrom the central portion and the cover or cap is now formed, as disclosedin Figs. 4, 5, and 6.
Slots 9, preferably intersecting at right angles, as disclosed in Fig. 1 of the drawing, are preferably provided at a point midway of the third fold illustrated in Fig. 2 I, of the drawing. These slots form a normally closed aperture or opening through which a sipping tube or similar article may be introduced without removing the cover and exposing the contents of the container 11 to germs and the like.
In operation, after the cap or cover is formed by the folding operation above described, the end or side portions 2 are separated and the cover placed over a tumbler or water pitcher, it being understood that the covers are made in many sizes. The side or end portions are held apart by the container 11 and thus formed into a substantially cylindrical body, or other suitable shape conforming to the shape of the container covered.
When a larger size is used to cover a water pitcher having a handle or similar lateral projection, said handle or projection 12 is extended between the unsecured lower overlapping e-dgesas disclosed in Fig. 6 of the drawing thereby preventing said handle or projection 12 from interfering with the proper placement of the cover.
As the sides 2 are held separated from the paneled, to facilitate placement and removal central portion of the sheet, as disclosed in Fig. 5 of the drawing the tabs 14. will be formed and held in such formation, thereby providing a means for the convenient replacement and removal of the cover.
While the device is primarily intended for use in hospitals, sanitariums and similar institutions, its use may be extended to cover generally any open topped container or utensil to prevent contamination of the contents of said container.
It is also intended that the device may be made from sheets of various colors whereby a pleasing effect may beproducedat small cost.
i Having thus'described my inventioinwhat I claimasnew and'desiieto-secure by Letters Patent a A sanitary cover comprising a sheet having its-side. portions? folded over a central portion with the edges of said sideportions overlapping and-secured together part way only, to leave an opening for the projec tion of a handle on a device to be covered, andlikewise having the upper corners turned down and the top of the entire folded sheet again turned down on the lineof the lower edges of said turned downrcornersxwhereby tabs may he formedywhen said coveris exof said cover over a container said :tabs for-handles.
In Witness whereof, I hereunto set nature,
by utilizing ELIZABETH M. SMITH.
