My present invention relates to the packaging of articles wound in rolls, such as tapes, cords, strips, and the like, and has particular reference to the packaging of elastic webbing and other rubberized fabric and elastic.

The packaging of elastic Webbing has involved' certain difficulties, as the material is subjected to the deteriorating effect of light and atmosphere unless thoroughly sealed; this effect reducing the elasticity of the material and producing fading of colors. This sealing, however, requires careful workmanship, particularly for containers such as spools or reels, in order to eliminate folds and to present an attractive appearance. It is the principal object of my invention to provide an inexpensive transportation and sale package that will fully protect the contents against the deteriorating effect of light and atmosphere, that will have no folds, apd that may be easily manufactured and applied.

A further object of my invention is to utilize coverings thatwill protect the goods from moisture and atmosphere and will at the same time permit effective printing to be displayed. 7

Another object is inexpenslveness of construction.

With these and other objects and advantageous features in view, the invention consists of a novel arrangement of parts d1sclosed more fully in the detailed description following, in conjunction with the aocempanying drawing, and defined more part1cu larly in the appended claims.

Referring to the'drawing, which is purposely drawn so as to exaggerate the thick package as used for cords and 'ness of the parts, the package '10 has a base 11, preferably formed as a spool or reel, with an upper head 12 and a lower head 13 of cardboard or similar material, the heads being locked to acentral hub 14, preferably of wood, metallic staples '15. As shown in Figure 5, the hub and the staples are preferably annular inform and include a p lu the heads and into thehub. o The elastic webbing, such as an elastic 17, is wound on the spool base 11, and a strip of gum ned material 18, which is preferably paper, is then secured thereto with theadhesive or grounded surface on theefxterior thereof. Two head covers 19, 20 0f transparent material, such as for example ",Ce'llor phane, or glazed paper,are thegn drawn over the heads 12, 13, as shown in Figure 3, and gummed-to the exterior of the strip 18 so as to preferably leave a central exposed rality of teeth 16 which penetratethnough portion of the strip. This type of packaging is also suitable for cords, threads, and the like,such as indicated at 22 in Figure 6, and may if desired be used with reels or spools of anypreferred peripheral contour. lustrated. The head covers are fixed to the strip 18 and locked in place by thezclosure strip 27.

The heads are impervious to light, and one or both maybe printed, embossed,or other:

WlSQ inexpensively marked to-contain dea .plan View, partly broken 2 sired information, data, advertising matter, and the like; the Cellophane covers, when secured to the inner strip, seal the wound material against light and atmosphere, and the closure strip completes the seal and causes the packaging to be neat and attractive. The packaging is accomplished in a simple and inexpensive manner.

lVhile I have described specific e1nbodiments of my invention, it is obvious that desired changes in the form and the proportions of the parts, and in their arrangement, may be made to suit the packaging requirements for individual fabrics and elastics, without departing from the spirit and the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

I claim 7 1. In a package, a reel having spaced heads and a central hub, material wound on said hub to partially fill the space between said heads, whereby a peripheral channel is provided between the heads, an annular strip in the channel between said heads and encircling said wound material, covers extending over the heads and having their edges extending downwardly into the channel and adheringly sealed to the outer surface of said strip.

In a package, a reel having spaced heads and a central hub, material wound on said hub to partially fill the space between said heads, whereby a peripheral channel is provided between the heads, an annular strip in the channel between said heads and encircling said wonnd material, covers extending over the heads and having their edges extending downwardly into the channel and adheringly sealed to the outer surface of said strip, and an annular closure strip disposed between the heads and overlyingsaid cover edges and adheringly sealed thereto.

In a sealed package, a reel havin spaced heads and a central hub, materia l wound on the hub to partially fill the space between said heads whereby a peripheral channel is provided between the heads, an annular strip in the channelbetween said heads and encircling said wound material and having its outer surface provided with a layer of adhesive, transparent covers extending over said heads and having their edges extending down into the channel and sealed to the outer surface of said strip, and an outer annular closure strip disposed in and substantially filling the space between said heads, and having a layer of adhesive on its inner surface and secured to said cover edges.

4. In a sealed package, a reel having spaced heads and a central hub, material Wound on said hub to partially fill the space between the heads whereby channel is provided between the heads, an annular str p d posed in Said hanne and a peripheral signature.
